The Faceless One
Notes
The Faceless One is the nickname of a feared ninja assassin. It is
whispered in certain places that this assassin has never failed - and
moreover that he (or she: no-one really knows) has served the same
clan since the days of the first Tokugawa Shogun. The woman who is
the Faceless One has forgotten if this is really true - all she
remembers is that she has served the clan as its finest executioner
for much more than a human lifetime. Raised by the clan to be their
ultimate weapon, she was a peerless kunoichi, preserved in the flower
of her youth by certain lost arcane magics. Not only has she mastered
the art of killing without weapons (for weapons are of little value
to a kunoichi), she also learned the semi-mystical skills that made
the first ninja legend - she can disappear, pass through barriers as
though they were not there, confuse the mind or senses of guards or
even possess someone's mind. It is this last, most secret art that
has made her what she is. The Faceless One (for her name has long
since been forgotten, even by herself) can take over another person's
mind and make them her tool. She can open her own mind to them,
equipping them with most of the combat skills she has acquired over
many, many years (hence all the powers and skills bought with "usable
by others"). This is why the Faceless One has remained unknown -
although a fearsome combatant, she works almost exclusively through
her possessed agents. Their death will not stop her - if it occurs,
she can always find a new dupe.
The life of the Faceless One has recently changed however. While
Japan remained a closed society, she was content with her role. The
new Japan and the new world outside it have piqued her curiosity. And
after such a long time, she has tired of pointless bloodshed. All
those lives extinguished - and for what? She has thus slipped away
from her clan and set out to explore the world, which she is sure
offers plenty of possibilities for someone with her skills.
