INTRODUCTION
I found the original TSR guidelines for awarding experience somewhat confusing, and they have a few shortcomings. The rules only suggested a few hundred XP for each PC's role-playing feat, something that almost certainly means nothing for high-level PCs. What good is a 300 XP bonus for good role-playing if a PC is on such a high level that he needs a million XP to get to the next level?

I therefore decided to make up my own, more balanced system, that takes into consideration the level the PCs are on. With that system, each role-playing feat means equally much to a PC, no matter what level he's on.

THE SYSTEM
The system is based on certain "units" of experience point awards, which I have decided to call AU (Award Unit). Each time a PC performs a feat worthy of an XP award, give that PC 1-2 AU.

AU are calculated in the following way:

1) For each PC, find out the total experience points encompassing the PC's current level, i.e. subtract the XP needed for this level from the XP needed to reach the next level.

2) Total these figures for all the PCs.

3) Average that total.

4) Divide that average total by 100. You now have one AU.

GAMING USE
Each time a PC performs an action worthy of an experience award, give that PC one or two AU. Either give those AU directly to the PC, or jot them down on the enclosed form and give them to the PCs at the end of the session/adventure.

One or two AU per award seems reasonable, but that may vary from campaign to campaign. If you play very often and the PCs advance very slowly, you may want to let one AU be 0.5% or 1/3% instead of 1%. Likewise, if you play only once in a while, increase the AU figure, or give out more AU per award.

Note that every time a character advances, you must recalculate the AU figure.

I hope you find this simple system useful in your campaign.
