Ake is a tall, ascetic looking priest, who was trained at the
Monastery of the Open Door near Ise as a demon-queller. He travels
the country in this aspect, tracking down rumours of unnatural
activity and putting an end to them. He habitually carries a heavy
iron-bound staff for dealing with problems that do not involve demons
and his belt is decorated with charms, bottles, and oddments - some
of which at any time are likely to contain the spirit of a trapped
demon. Those demons he traps are usually called upon at some point to
offer him a service and then depart before being freed. Alternatively
they are interogated about the future. Those demons which are
unco-operative are drained of Ki to to power Ake's sorcery, or simply
killed. Ake normally wears monk's robes and his head is shaven.
Unlike many of his chinese contemporaries, Ake is quiet and serious -
saying little and interacting with others as little as possible.
Partly this is his nature, and partly it is from a reluctance to
involve others in his dangerous career. A certain isolation also
helps reduce the exposure of his familiar - a small hideous demon he
has bound to his service, and who helps him in his tasks.
