Yoshi

Yoshi is a very large young man from a small peasant-village background. His life has had three phases. He grew up in a typical village (one of the ones in this province). He grew up very big (huge--stronger and taller at 15 than any man in the village). Some gamblers passing through the town offered him a job -- they could use someone as big as he was as muscle. They gave his parents a signing bonus that was more money than they could normally earn in a year, and they convinced him to go (didn't take much convincing, as the village wasn't much and the girls made fun of him ).

Working for the gamblers he learned how to fight a little, but he didn't fight too much -- as huge and strong as he was, he rarely had to do more than glower at someone making trouble. He travelled with them throughout the province for a couple of years. One day while he and the gamblers were in an Ariki tavern he caught the eye of the wrestling trainer of Lord Arai. The wrestling/sumo trainer saw the young man's potential and took him to the castle, where Lord Arai gave permission for him to be trained in sumo.

The third phase of his life was in the castle, under the training of the wrestlers. His size and strength soon made him one of Lord Arai's best wrestlers. Lord Arai was impressed with his good nature and sense of duty, and decided that he might be useful in other ways as well. Samurai were often too proud or too conspicuous for some jobs, like guarding his middle-level merchant factors, or taking messages to contacts in the rougher quarter of the town, or simply going where his samurai would be too obvious. Lord Arai thus gave the order that Yoshi should receive training in bojutsu.

Yoshi is a good-natured young man, quite easy-going. He is not stupid, but is not particularly good at making decisions on the spur of the moment; neither is he very observant (thus his low INT). He is enormous and very powerful. He is quite fast for his size (which is not the same thing as being truly fast: SPD 3, DEX 14).

Yoshi is still quite young. As Lord Arai saw, Yoshi has great potential. With a little exposure and experience (and 2 e.p.) he could quickly become quite adept at Streetwise and Conversation; probably gaining +1 or +2 CSL in Sumo as well in the relatively short run.

Yoshi isn't really ugly, but a little lantern-jawed and as big as he is, he doesn't get the attention of pretty women much. He is quite polite to his superiors in most circumstances (as befits a peasant). Even though he is a relatively nice fellow, his huge strength makes him a formidable opponent in a fight.
