San Francisco by Night

Storylines and How to Get Involved

San Francisco by Night requires creative, intelligent, and self-motivating role-players.  If you require a Storyteller to craft every scene in which your character is involved, you will have a very difficult time in our chronicle.  To succeed and add value to our game, you must be able to create your own Storylines and find ways of getting your character involved in what's happening.   The Storytellers will help you as much as they can, but you need the ability to be proactive.  Here are a few suggestions to help players get involved:

General Suggestions

1. Buddy Lists.  Add members of the game to your Buddy list, especially those who share common interests and are very active.  When they are logged on, send an Instant Message to them to inquire about arranging a scene, either now or another time.  For example, "Hey, feel like role-playing?   Let's meet at 'The Wharfs'?",  or "Hey, my character wants a Sabbat meeting called to discuss some important business.  When can you do it?" or "As a player, I want my Vampire character to get to know a Mage because I like Mage crossovers.  How could we arrange for our characters to meet?" or even "Hey, How can I get involved in the game?"

2.  Coteries.  Forming a coterie, or joining a group that regular plays together (i.e., best friends), can be good for several reasons:   (1)  Since you already know the other characters, it's easier to do scenes.   You already have things to discuss and talk about.  (2)  It can be good for Protection.  The World of Darkness is a predatory environment.  There is safety in numbers. How do you form a coterie?  Find other players who you enjoy role-playing with.  It is really good if your character shares similar values and interests.  For example, Sabbat characters are usually not going to form coteries with Camarilla characters and visa versa.   However, occasionally an unusual coterie may form because the characters share some something which overrides natural prejudices (e.g., your best friend is a Wraith.  Just don't tell the Prince!).

3. Message Boards.  Read the messages in the message boards to get a feel for some of the story lines going on in the chronicle.  Not everyone posts their story lines, but some do.  If something seems interesting, contact the person about finding a way to join in.  For example, "Hey, I noticed that you are having trouble with a Celestial Chorus Mage.  How can I become involved In-character?"

4.  Play Your characters.  While this may seem like a no-brainer, it's not.  What are your characters goals?  How will you implement them?  As you try and delve into your characters goals and characters, role-playing opportunities will abound.   If your character is trying to grow in knowledge, you will need to seek out those who know more than you do.   If you are having difficulty determining goals for your character, then form an alliance with another character and help that person achieve their goals.  Here are some specific suggestions:

A) Develop Humanity or Path rating.  Seek role-playing experiences which will demonstrate the level of your humanity/path.  Is it too high or too low for how you play your character?  Do you want to improve it?  Do you want to regress?  Seek role-playing experiences that will allow you to do so.

B)  Gain Political Power.  For example, do you want to be the Prince? Then most likely you will need to depose the present one and gain enough support to be appointed in his place.  This will require numerous scenes with the other members of the power structure.   Also, if you aren't a Primogen, you will need to spend some time scheming to be part of the council.

C) Increase in Knowledge. For example, you want to raise your occult rating from 3 to 4.  Therefore, you try and gain access to the Mage Chantry and their most wondrous library.  You will have to contact a Mage and gain permission.

D) Destroy your enemies.  The World of Darkness is filled with angst and terror.  If you are a Garou, then begin hunting Vampires.   If you are a Tremere, hunt the Salubri.  Most groups have natural enemies.   Seek them out and destroy them.  Just getting into position to do so can create lots of Storylines.

5.  Consider a New Character.  If all else fails, then you may want to try a new character type.  Perhaps your present character just doesn't fit in with our mix of characters.  Ask othe rplayers what type of character could attract role-playing opportunities.

A prophecy of a child… a child born in a world far, far from now….In this New World, in a city by the coast, before the year 2000, a devil child will be born of an Awakened woman. But the father, the father shall not be as other men. This devil child shall shift the balance of power and all the Awakened shall tremble. "  Is this the child she carries now within her womb or another?  Is the Prophecy true?   See IC - Prophecy be Told (Sierrah) for more information.  In connection with this prophecy, a newreligious group is in town, with strong occult connections.  They are quietly recruiting members in gothic clubs and similar places.  They seem dedicated towards someone called "Vulgarius" (Major WoD NPC for those who can do research).  They also seem to be searching for something.
