Backyard Soccer MLS Edition
I received this game and unwrapped it while my kids (I'm so fortunate
to have three) was all over me just to get a glimpse of what this
exiting package was (makes me think, hmmm, it's nearly Christmas
again; Amazing right?!). The box (ever thought about how many booooring
boxes exists in the world today =) was truly great and I hoped the
game would be the same ... and then again: No! But only because
I then would have to use the laptop =) ... The game as it turned
out is brilliant; The box, the CD and the game is everything a kid
fond of soccer ever wanted to have. It's probably the most thought
through soccer game for kids ever (!) (not that I know of many others
like this, but I truly doubt they'll come near this game). It almost
smells of quality. It all seems very much thought through, from
the easy menus (if you don't know where to click, you'll learn it
fast) to the actual match. You don't feel this is a game that has
been rushed through. It caught me thinking something like: Oh! Sure,
of course there is this-and-that in the game and of-course you can
do like this. So it is really nice, and I can only imagine what
the kids think: Must be quite overwhelming. I quickly noticed the
non-stressing atmosphere of the game, which is - of course - based
on sound and visual input, - both of high quality. The drawings
are really nice and so are the sound/speech/animations. I also like
the non-competitive feel about it and that they have mixed both
boys and girls in the game. I think its great that they have developed
a game that has most of the features from the 'adult' game scene
and turns it into something funny and understandable for the kids.
Some great features include the 'Print Your Team Photo' function
(remember its a game for kids ... and printing this is a lot cheaper
than buying posters for 'em), that you can pick different places
to play, that you can name your own team, select its colours, pick
its players (my oldest liked the idea of this, seemingly picking
the ones he thought was coolest (needless to say, that he chose
only boys - he's in that age ) and he very much enjoyed the idea
of being in control). You can also select how hard you want the
game to be and when played on Easy, you don't get tackled much,
so it gives the kid a chance of planning the passes, the dribbling,
the shots on goal … perhaps the only thing missing is an Character
Designer? But all in all I can only recommend this game to anyone
with kids between 5 and 10. Definitely and mine (well the oldest)
would probably play the whole day if their father wasn't so reluctant
to pass on the PC =)
The only error I can come to think of is when you play the Indoor
Invitational Games, the commentators _still_ sits on the same bench
as they do when you play outside, with trees in the background etc.
and the scoreboard's the same as it is when you play outside ...
but this is really only a tiny drop in the great waters of the game.
So I end this review now; I want a game of soccer with my kid =)
