never give up Chinese Opera
-- By Kwong Man-Ki— In order to fulfill sister’s dream, Yuri Chan Chung-sai still dares to establish new Cantonese troupes even though the development of Chinese opera began to decline after 1980s. Yuri is now the troupe director of “Good Sing” “Sun Lai Kwok” and New Generation of Cantonese Opera”. The troupes are recommended in the New Territories and are always invited to perform in some traditional festival such as Tin Hau Festival and sun Kung Festival. The have performed in City Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Center and other districts’town hall circularly which the performance always gain good reputation. However, it is surprised to hear that Yuri did not like Cantonese opera before. “I think that Cantonese opera is long and boring,” she said. Who made her to continue is her sister Chan Lai-fong , a famous Cantonese opera artist who really has sincerity and love towards Cantonese opera. While Lai-fong was working hard of being a good artist, she got serious illness and needed to stop her performance for two years. “I am very soulful when Lai-fong insisted her faith towards Cantonese Opera even though she has got serious illness.” Yuri said. She then established the “Sun Lai Kwok” Cantonese Opera troupe in 1986 to help fulfilling her sister’s dream and since then she never give up for thirteen years. “Every time when I see Lai-fong standing on the stage, showing her talents and delivering her performance art, I am very happy and satisfied,” Yuri believed that Lai-fong has a good voice, a beautiful appearance and talent. Working in Cantonese Opera for 13 years, she has lost more than three millions. “I am a volunteer and never get any salary,” she laughed. “When our troupe first established, I was very sincere to ask the organizer to give us a chance, how ever, our box office was really bad at the end.” In 1987, they could struggle for the chance to perform in Pen Chau, but hey were despised by other troupes and sabotaged by them. “Someone threw tow out of our three microphones into the water as to frustrate our performance.” Yuri said. Yuri added this might be good for the troupe on the other hand. “We did endeavor to perform, so the organizer appreciated us and invited us for the next two years.” She said. The organizer also introduced them to other committees of Pat Heung such as Tai O, so they could build up their reputation in the New Territories. Yuri would like to thank Lai-fong’s master, Lam Kam-tong, a famous female Cantonese Opera artist, and also her husband who always support her. As yuri said, now she really loves Cantonese opera as her sister does and will continue to work on it no matter how hard it is.
