The Beastiary
last updated: September 22, 1998
The Beastiary consist of a listing of 176 unique unit troop types available in the Forgotten Realms Play-by-Mail Scenarios, it is categorized into 3 separate sections: Characters/Leader Unit Types, Standard Troop Unit Types, and Unique Monster/Creature Unit Types. Out of which only 31 unit types all from the Unique Monster/Creature Unit Types are not musterable/conscriptable by communities, and only be recruited by befriending the wandering bands of mercernaries and monsters with a compatible alignment unit of your own. Naturally, a dwarf which is good alignment and can never befriend an Orc which is evil in alignment. The best recruiter is a human character or a human light calvary where they can travel fast enough to catch up with any friendly neutral units to be recruited.
The details provided are mostly in percentage values to allow easy comparison between units as to which units are more powerful or useful. I believe there will be choices for all to make. Some players will stick to a select number of unit types because they feel it is the best value for their gold or some believe the unit is the strongest or most powerful unit they can muster or recruit. I believe there are those who will believe that they will muster whatever units they can afford in the current situation or to suit their playing style be it slow and powerful or swift and decisive. Whatever it is, representations in percentage format will allow the player to make the best choice.
The values represented by the legend below:
UT# | unit Type Number |
Name | Description of the item |
Races | The Race of the Unit must correspond to the mustering community. |
Alignment | The Nature of the Unit What matters is only Good, Evil or Neutral |
Comm | The smallest community that can muster the unit |
Gold | The intrinsic value of the unit, these values are used to calculate the entity value the player owns; and does not include the 5 gold muster cost for maintaining gold production for a community. |
Hits | The Number of Hits the Unit will take before being destroyed. It is an absolute number. |
HitB | Hit Bonus, extra hits to the stack; which makes these units with this attribute the most sort after. This is a rare attribute, and only unique monster/creatures have it. And makes for a player to be very lucky to recruit one such unit. |
Move | The number of Hexes it can travel given in a single turn. |
MvB | Movement Bonus, this is an absolute number and is not a percentage, just add the value to your slowest unit in the stack. Remember this value is cumulative. |
Magic, Missile, Melee, Magic Resistance, Defense | These are base values from where all modifiers such as bonuses and terrain will be calculated upon. There are represented in percentages. |
MaB, MiB, MeB, MRB, DefB | Are in percentages and represent, Magic, Missile, Melee, Magic Resistance and Defense Bonuses respectively. |
IR | Is Information Radius, it allows units/stacks that have this ability to sight enemy units, communities and hexes one hex around from its current position. Essentially all 7 hex is viewed including the hex they reside in. |
