DE LA BIO
De La Soul started out by
releasing "plug Tunin" as a
white label, the record
attracted the attention of
Tommy Boy records who
snapped them up. The debut
album "3 feet high and rising"
was an amazing abstract
piece of hippie-hop. Much of
the crazyness was due to the
prescence of Stetsasonic
man and master producer
Prince Paul. The group
consists of Plug one:
Posdnous (picture) Plug two:
Trugoy the dove and DJ
PA Mase (not to be
confused with the no skill
rapper at Bad Boy). The
group are great performers
and should not be missed
when in town. De La
released "De La Soul is
dead" to the sound of people
going "Eh? Ooooooh?
Mmmmm!" it was a complete
departure from the hippie ish
style of the last album and
sounded comparitively a bit
hard. The album was another
classic but less original, the
stand out cut for me was
"Keepin the faith"
but everyone else in the world bought "Ring
ring ring Hey hey hey" just so they could put it
on thier answering machine.
The third album "Buhloone mindstate" was not
a complete failure but didnt deliver the same
vibes as the other two.
It was still better thatn most of
the rest of the worlds effort.
The latest album "Stakes is
high" is great. It is the hardest
album to date but remains
happy about the good things
in life. Tracks like "Stakes is
high" and "Itsoweezee"
stormed everybody and "4
more" stormed the R&B
heads while the b-side "Sweet
dreams" put Nas to shame
and rocked the underground.
De La will hopefully record
another album in the near
future despite some comments
about giving up. They recently
appeared with Q-Tip on the
remix of the JBeez'"How you
want it we got it". De la are a
pretty positive oriented group
despite the bullshit Trugoy
chats on Camp Lo's album.
If you don't have any De
La....WA GWAN?
