Ultralisks serve well as support for hydras and sponging up damage for the rest of the hive cluster. The upgrades in Brood War made the ultralisks more than that, it made the ultralisk a meaner and fiercer species that can be a strike force in enemy territory. A little expensive 200 minerals and 200 gas, the ultralisk is the toughest land unit with a 400 regenerating hit points to deal with. It's kaiser blades deal 20 normal damage that tear apart almost anything. Only air units match this fat creature.

The damage upgrade to level 3 is a must because it makes a 29 damage per strike. A bunch of ultras smashing 20 damage per hit is a fearsome sight, imagine them doing 29 damage!

Upgrade both chitinouos plating and speed when you plan on making above six of them. The armor of the zerg when in full level can make the ultralisks armor 6 with the chitinouos plating making most attacks weak against them.

Above twelve and these monsters can wipe out an enemy base in moments. Combined with defilers, they are nearly invulnerable. Dark swarm the long range units,(bunkers, cannons, tanks, reavers)and when these creature close on them, wham!
