The mutalisk is one of the best and most used unit in the game of Starcraft. Let's see why the great commanders of the worlds command these flying monsters of the zerg hive cluster.

  • Mutalisks are cheap 100 minerals and 100 gas. You can produce a squad with only one mineral and vespene gas spot; you can produce an army with 2 gas spots!
  • Mutalisks are fairly the fastest creatures in the game, able to outrun almost any air unit except upgraded scouts.
  • Mutalisks are easy to climb in the zerg technology tree. A spawning pool, a lair uprade and a spire are the basic requirements to prduce these assault flyers.
  • Mutalisks are versatile and do not lose their edge even in the late stages of the game. Early in the game, they are deadly for there are few anit air defenses especially protoss.
  • Mutalisks in great numbers deal well with marines, hydras, dragoons, zealots, firebats, tanks and hordes of zerglings. Their bouncing attack capable of damaging adjacent units although in small damage proves to be very deadly in the battlefield.
  • Mutalisks can morph into deadlier and more specialized strains like the bomber guardian and the slow but crippling devourer.

The mutalisks is deadly if commanded well in the game. Here are some guidelines on how to use these species to the fullest killing capability. There is a unit that can outmatch the mutalisk, a squad of corsairs with their splash damage can kill off mutas unless the mutas are of superior number.

  • The fastest mutalisk rush is to go for extractor and spawning pool. Mine gas and minerals constantly and upgrade to lair. Build spire and creep colonies, continue producing drones and overlords and be sure to build a second hatchery. Before the spire finishes, do not morph any more larva. After the spire completes, pump mutas.
  • Upgrade damage and air carapace. A bunch of these vicous flyers each dealing 12 damage and bouncing on is not a sight to be laughed about.
  • On land maps, be sure to attack with lots of zerglings first before charging you mutas in. This will distract the enmy and make your mutas live longer to thrash your opponent.
  • If yhe opponent is zerg, hunt down his overlords. Use the speed of your mutalisks to your advantage.
  • Try hit and run tactics along the workers in the mine field.
  • Be more careful of a loaded bunker than a watchful tower. Bunkers are tougher and can be repaired while a great number of your flyers can take out a tower or two before suffering even a single casualty.
  • Morph into guardians if the enemy has a well fortified base to strike from afar. Save some mutas for air defense. Use devourers only if opponent focuses on capital ships (carriers and battlecruisers). Mutas are better for air to air combat than devourers.
