Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a brilliant hybrid of 3D exploration, Adventure and Role Playing. Nintendo has just released one of the best games ever made at a time when both Nintendo and we, the gameplaying public, needed it the most. Ocarina of Time gives an adreline shot to RPGĺs and breathes new life into a tired genre. It is a must have game that will have N64 owners who were jealous of the "just as amazing" Metal Gear Solid, gloating over their own exclusive.

The moment you turn on Zelda, there is that feeling. You felt it before. Remember when you turned on Mario 64 the first time? That feeling that this was something special. Well that sensation just came back. Ocarina of Time is a Grand Vision. It plays, looks, sounds, and feels as though it were made as a gift to video game players. And well, it is. This game was made with us in mind. It wasnĺt made to cash in and make a quick buck, although Nintendo is counting on it to revive itĺs market share in Japan and elsewhere. The nice part is that this game would have been made whether Nintendo was in trouble or not. It was made for the love of gaming. How many games can say that? Crash Bandicoot 3 anyone? Hello? Hello?

You start off the game as child Link, which in turn, precedes any of the Zelda games so far. This is the first appearance of Link, so to speak. You start off in the fairy village in Kokoriki Forest. This is where you must learn your moves. Link can do a lot of things; talk, walk, run, swim, sword fight, jump, grab items, throw items, use other weapons...the list goes on. The nice part is however, that you wonĺt have to learn a ton of complex buttons and controller moves. For the most part 1 button does most of it. You see, most of what Link does is context sensitive. That is, when Link needs to open a door, the Action button allows him to. When Link needs to speak, the Action button does that, too. When Link needs to climb... you guessed it, Action Button. This allows even the most novice players to jump in and get adventuring.

As the adventure unfolds youĺll find yourself switching back and forth between time periods. Things that you do in the past affect the future, so you must be sure to cover all of your tracks. For example, Adult Link can only ride the horse, but it is the child Link that must first gain the horseĺs trust. Both Links, have moves and weapons that are exclusive to them, which makes the game so much more interesting. Once you get used to one set of weapons, you have to learn new ones.

Graphically this game is the catĺs meow and it doesnĺt even require the 4 Meg Ram Expansion Cart. When you are wandering the Hyrule Field youĺll feel like you are actually somewhere. Youĺll watch the sunset and feel the tension as daylight turns to darkness, your nerves will twitch when you hear the wolves howl in the distance and youĺll realize that you have been immersed in a true 3D world.

The adventure itself is long with many subquests that you may or may not want to complete. However, often you will be rewarded with something that is tres cool if you do, so choose wisely. The genius of this game is that it will never leave you hanging. It may take you a while to figure out what to do next, but you are free to wander and visit places that may not figure into your quest for while. You must talk to everyone you meet, otherwise you may miss a vital clue. Also, remember that this is a Shigeru Miyamoto game. If you are stuck, use your imagination. Look for things that seem to be around for no apparent reason. This is the Miyamoto way. Usually the answer is right in front of your face, and youĺll feel like a genius when you figure it out. Now thatĺs good game design.

If you own an N64, you have to have this game. And you canĺt say you hate these kind of games, because there has never been this kind of game. Itĺs in a league of itĺs own. It is the Renaissance RPG. It melds all aspects of itĺs gameplay mechanics into a triumphant masterpiece that will be the new high watermark from which all games will be judged. Let me put it this way: I will never play another RPG/Adventure unless it is done as well as this. I mean really, what would be the point?
