Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle are all picked by other trainers, and Ash had to take the shocking little Pikachu. Pikachu is reluctant to go into the Pokeball, and Ash had to drag it with a string. Ash upsets a Spearow by knocking its head with a rock, and it dives for Pikachu. Pikachu's shock made it even madder, and it called a whole tribe to chase down Ash. Ash and Pikachu plunge into a lake, and was pulled up by Misty. Ash borrows Misty's bike to get away from Spearows, but trips over a rock. With the last of its strength, Pikachu uses Thundershock to send the Spearows flying back. Ash carries Pikachu and runs off to find a Pokemon Center. |

Ash worries about Pikachu, and Team Rocket invades the center hoping to find rare Pokemon. Ash sends Pokemon from the shelves in the center, but they were easily defeated. Pikachu wakes up and shocks Team Rocket, and the shock mixed with Koffing's gas blows up the Pokemon Center. Ash is congratulated for saving the center, and sets off for Viridian Forest. |
3. Ash Catches a Pokemon | Ash arrives in Viridian Forest, and captures a Caterpie. Misty is scared of bugs, but Caterpie likes her a lot. Misty's coldness toward Caterpie hurts its feelings, and Ash tries to cheer Caterpie up. At night, Caterpie talks with Pikachu about how it wants to evolve and become a Butterfree. On the next day, Ash sees a Pidgeotto and tries to catch it by sending Caterpie into battle, Caterpie was wiped out, but a shock from Pikachu gets Ash the Pidgeotto. Team Rocket appears, trying to take Ash's Pikachu. Ash sends Pidgeotto, but it was defeated by a double team attack from Ekans and Koffing. Ash sends in Caterpie as a final attempt, and Caterpie defeats Ekans, Arbok, and Meowth by using String Shot. After the battle, Caterpie evolves to Metapod, and Ash travels further on. |
4. Challenge of the Samurai | Ash sees a Weedle in the forest, and attempts to capture it. After weakening it with Pidgeotto, Ash is about to catch it. However, a Samurai suddenly challenges Ash to a match. Ash accepts, but the Weedle crawled away. Samurai quickly defeated Pidgeotto with Pinsir, but when Pinsir tried to clamp Metapod's hardened body, it broke its pincers. Samurai sends out a Metapod, and the Harden contest takes a LONG time. Suddenly, a Beedrill swarm attacks Ash and takes away Metapod. Samurai repeatedly blames Ash and calls him a Novice, and Ash tries to get Metapod back. His attempt is almost successful, but the Kakunas that are guarding the Metapod wakes up when Team Rocket yells their slogan. They evolve into Beedrills and attacks Ash. Ash makes a heroic dive pass the Beedrills and got Metapod, and when he tripped, he realized that he was the one to be blamed. Metapod feels that Ash really cares, and deflects a Beedrill from attacking Ash. The deflection created a slashing scar in Metapod, and Butterfree comes out of it, defeating the Beedrills with its Sleep Powder. Ash rejoiced, and Samurai acknowledges Ash as a true Pokemon trainer. |

After charging Pikachu up, Ash returns to the gym and defeats Brock's Geodude with Pikachu's Thundershock. Brock sends out Onix again, and once again Pikachu is in a Bind. A previous Thundershock created some flames in the roof cracks and the sprinklers went off. Ash tries to finish off Onix, but Brock's siblings held him off. Ash leaves forfeiting the match, but Brock runs after him and gave him the Boulder Badge.
