Welcome to Pokémon
THE ADVENTURE BEGINS
Okay, so you just started your adventure. You'll need a lot of help catching and caring for all of your precious Pokémon. First of all, you need to decide what you want to call yourself and what your main opponent's name is. If you want to leave it the way it is, pick Ash and Gary.
Now you'll start at home. You're in your room, and there's a TV and a computer. Go to your computer and take out the Potion. You might need it in an upcoming battle. Go downstairs and leave the house. If you go to your opponent's house (I'll refer to your opponent as Gary), you'll find his sister. Look on the wall for a map of the "Pokémon world". Any place you can move that square cursor to is a place you can access sooner or later. Now try to step in the grassy area and Prof. Oak will call you. He will bring you to his lab and give both you and Gary a Pokémon.
THE FIRST DECISION
Professor Oak offered you three choices: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Bulbasaur may have the edge at the start, but later it will be less useful than the other two. Charmander, on the other hand, can be hard to handle at first, but the reward of a powerful Charizard may tip your scale in deciding which one to choose. Squirtle is an overall balanced Pokémon, and Blastoise can be very powerful when equipped with the Surf ability. It's your choice on who to pick, and any of those three would make a good companion.
A CHALLENGE FROM GARY
Okay, so you got your first Pokemon. Ready to battle? I hope you are, because Gary will challenge you the moment you try to leave. Gary will always pick a Pokémon that gives him an edge. If you pick Bulbasaur, he'll use Charmander; if Charmander was your choice, then he'll take Squirtle; and if you picked Squirtle, he is gonna want Bulbasaur. Anyways, use Tackle or Scratch and leave your ability in the second slot alone for now. Keep fighting, and if you are knocked down to 3 hit points or less, here's where the Potion comes in. Heal your Pokémon and Gary will be no match for you now. You'll get some money for defeating him and your Pokémon will grow a level.

TO VIRIDIAN CITY
Now you can start your journey. You can't catch Pokémons yet, but you can still raise your initial Pokémon by battling it with a Pidgey or Rattata. Keep going north, and you will find two people on the route. Talk to the one not in the bushes, and you'll receive a Potion. Keep going north and you'll find a sign saying that you've reached Viridian City.
