This page like my site will be done my way. It will not be normal by most American standards. I do not kid myself into thinking most other cultures will consider this normal either. Here are some facts I need to get handled before going onward.
1. This net site group will be done in my own personal manner without regard to any existing national standards. I am an individual who flat out refuses to be just another drone.
2. I will be using a mix of American English, Norwegian, personal terms, and slang on this net area.
3. I will have partial to full deviation from prime topics of Norsk-Americansk , Americansk, and Norsk mega groups on this net group. I will try to keep such deviation to minimal here. If I have another area to stick this material, major writeups will go there.
4. I am going to put what I can of possible interest to Norsk-Americansk , Norsk, and Americansk with no Norsk bloodlines yet Norsk interests like me here. Where does it say one must have a Norsk bloodline to fully appreciate and /or enjoy Norwegian culture, language, and lifestyle?
5. Some of the stuff mentioned may or may not be fully legal everywhere in the world. By reading this net page, you do release me from all liability in your local area regardless of where that may be. If you skip ahead to other pages, your actions do explicitly agree to these legal concepts without recourse. I will get a US based legal disclaimer up as soon as I can.
6. Unlike too many sites with an obnoxious sign by my view “This site is under perpetual construction” or something close, this net group is perpetually under construction yet shall probably never have that darn sign.
7. I will use spell checking on my English by default. Grammar checking may or may not be done constantly. My Norse can not be spell checked as both my word processor and HTML editors do not understand it. I will go find a Norsk based or acceptable spell checker when I can.
8. This may drive some people nuts. I am going to treat this whole net group like a application I might write. It makes sense for me. It will be a non standard net group in too many ways.
9. My language shall be mostly what America call PG13 to R range with the occasional NC17. I am aware that many other countries especially Europe consider America to be over reactive kids concerning language use, sex, and sexual content.
10. Because this is my Norsk Log and Study page, I have a better than normal chance of getting something wrong. While I will be as accurate as possible, mistakes in grammar are almost guaranteed. Spelling errors are less likely yet definitely possible. The only mistakes that are not likely are data mistakes as I can usually check it for correctness before updating this page.
11. I will be posting Norse here all over this page and eventually its sequals. I will make my best effort to not make any major foulups in Norwegian language grammar or sentence structure. Since I am teaching myself Norwegian from books and net sites, all Norwegian will be one of four types. A) Accurate Norsk I get this off some net site or printed material from a reputable source. B) Checked Norsk I get it from where ever yet it is checked before it goes into this document. C) My attempted Norsk I make this up from my learning experience. Since this will have the highest chance of mistakes, I will try making all of this text different. It will be royal blue / violet or blue on red background. Mistakes can and will happen so please do not make a major fuss about it. Vær sa snill neigh rask og streng dom takk. D) Attempted Translations This Norwegian has almost the same chance for error that my attempted Norse has. However, as a learning attempt it must be done. You will find Norsk and Engelsk (English) side by side. Notes I have made will be inside brackets [ ] or parentheseis ( ) or both [ ( ) ] as needed. If I need even more note separtions, I will use “<“ and “>” with squirly braces “{ }” as final measure. If any note has “?” then I think I may have the general translation down. If any note has “??” then I may be on the right track yet I am not so sure. If any note has “???” or worse, do consider it a educated guess at the very best; I may be taking a very wild way, way off course shot in the dark. Please do consider this as it is intended...I am trying to translate Norwegian into English. I will not be that good for several years. I will list the data source for the translations in red color ink.
12. I have made reasonable attempts at having the Norsk writing be correct.
13. I have no affiliations other than passing net tourist with any net site listed on this page or its sequals. I am not an employee nor a prospective employee. I am not a church member of the The Norske Church at this time nor am I likely to be one anytime in the predictable future.
14. The net sites I will be using to teach myself Norsk have not been contacted in any way. I have no permission to redistribute anything from them so I will not do so for any reason. I will try sticking to daily life events that should be common. I may use various snippets from official documents as that will be what I need for learning Norse. I am using the net sites strictly for learning purposes only. It is my opinion that if I post small sections from the online documents. with proper credit followed by my attempted translations, I should not have any legal trouble A) Official Forms if I download any will never be posted pre or post translation effort. B) Official Announcements will never be posted. If I use one to attempt translation, you will never see it without permission from the source. C) Official Declarations(Goverment or Church) will never be posted. These are things such as travel warnings. I may use snippets form various pages I believe are non official business. What I mean non official business is anything dealing with the entity in its perceived normal and expected operations.
15. I may contact Den Norske Sjømannsmisjon, Sons of Norway, and some others eventually.
16. So I can honest say “I have looked for Norwegian Tutors and found none” or “I have looked for Norwegian tutors and found none I could afford” I have looked via the net. My results are below... This is my new net group. The site itself is quite old as I have had it since 1998 or so. This net page group is intended to be my written foray into Norwegian Culture and Language. I have recently decided to learn Norwegian. This desire was long overdue as I had originally desired learning Norwegian back in high school or second school by Norge's standards. Of course, it was not available. So I took Espanõl/Spanish/Spanisk as I do live in American south west with vibrant and frequent contact with Mexican Spanish on a daily or near daily basis.
I have had interest in Norway since my teens. I am sure part of it was simply Vikings legends and myths yet it was probably more than that. I do firmly believe having family Norwegian friends did booster my fascination of Norway. All of us would sit around the dining room table when they would drop in which was not often. Even SAS (Scandinavian Airline Service) personal must work many months between vacation times. I think the average was close to 1 week per 2 years on average.
I have kept what I could of this fascinating country. I have gathered what was possible and built it up. Now I have finally achieved what I wanted long ago; I have made multiple contacts with other Norwegians. Before I get too far lets step back about 18 months in time.
I think it was roughly late September when I attended the local Celtic Festival near my city town hall. It was very small as the area is not large. Still, I had a nice taste of Celtic life and culture. This was probably my first International Culture contact in far too many years. I hated having to go home so I could sleep and then work. Yet losing my job was very low priority. So I spent my time there, collected what Celtic tastes I could, and then went home. I wondered that if Renaissance Fairs and Celtic Festival existed, why could other cultures not have similar events? I vowed that if a festival or fair based on Scandinavia existed I would find it and if at all possible, attend. I did not look or wait long. In April 2002, a newspaper ad caught my attention. It had a picture of the stereotypical Vikings above a line. It read something like “Scandinavian Festival this weekend” with a date. I took great glee in recording it. This news that I had been waiting for had arrived. I counted down the days at work and home with enthusiasm as it was happening. The fact I had to work both days it occurred meant nothing to me; I had worked too many days because my co-workers were less than dependable and were for my entire stay there on 4 and half hours sleep more often than I can count. Here was a definite great cause to lose some sleep; Here was a Scandinavian Festival practically coming to me.
I was awe struck by it. Not by its size as the area was smaller than the recently visited Renaissance Fair in a nearby town north of me. No, I was awe struck by all that I could see, touch, interact, and observe. Here was Denmark, Norway, Sweden and related countries made real. I took no real notes other than business cards. I did purchase 1 baseball style hat with Norway and its flag on it and a humorous Norsk shirt from a Danish lady named Kirsten. Her business is called “Kirsten of Copenhagen” which specializes in Scandinavian Imports. She had a Swedish helper. When I left at I must as it was late for me, I left one very happy Americansk. I had Danish Pancakes which were quite sweet yet delicious. Or at least I thought it was Danish pancakes and now I think it was something else. More on that idea shall be covered later. Before I left I did take a complete tour of the place. I found a few booths selling learning and /or translation software. I also did find a booth or two offering language tutoring. I made note of these via business card collection and moved on. I did not have the cash available nor did I expect it anytime soon. I did make some crude notes about this festival. I learned it was an yearly event. I did vow then while still looking at Scandinavia that I would return even if I must miss sleep.
March 2003
I saw what I had been waiting for. The newspaper had an ad for Scandinavian Festival at the same place last year. It is a different weekend yet that is irrelevant to me. I made the trip down to the site. I found an excellent parking spot. I then made my way to the general site where it was last year. There was nothing here. I did not understand as I know I had read the newspaper ad correctly. It clearly stated that the festival would be occurring again. I flagged down a campus police officer and asked. I was told that “Yes, There will be a Scandinavian Festival here. Yes, you did come to the right area. However, you are extremely early. “ I was some 3 weeks early. Oops, I was a little too aggressive in coming to the site. I thanked the gentleman after getting the correct dates.

I came back on the correct weekend to find what I expected...Mini Scandinavian Paradise or at least as close as I am likely to get anytime soon. I was in much better financial shape so accordingly I brought more cash this time. My target for this extra cash was simple...I wanted to buy a learning aid if I could that would teach me Norsk. I wanted to learn Norwegian which I had been denied when I was younger. Alas, the booths I sought were not here. No matter, for I did have the business cards at home. I did drop by Kirsten’s booth again as she has many nice informal clothes I like in her wares. I picked up only a single T-shirt this time. I should have picked up another Norway hat yet did not. Her Swedish helper was there again. I am going to have to get her name for politeness if nothing else next time.
Our Norwegian friends had recently sent a letter describing Lefse. They made it sound so tasty I naturally looked for it this year. I found a booth operated and staffed by “Sons of Norway” selling Lefse and few other Norwegian food staples. I had a brief chat with a lady weighing a tall chef hat with “Norwegian Chef” on it named Becky. I was enlightened about what Lefse was. It sounded darn good so I had some. I absolutely had to agree with the family friends that this was darn good. I ended up having my fill of Lefse and wanting more yet I was stuffed. I had my standard backup plan of Chinese yet it was clearly not needed. Why not enjoy this Norse food when I could? I am not sure now if I had Danish Pancakes or Lefse the first time I came to this particular Scandinavian Festival.
I observed and watch numerous Scandinavian displays and demonstrations. A group of students had a mock combat event up that anyone could play Viking warrior. I choose not to participate for fatigue was kicking in again. I found a functional representation of a Scandinavian high hall table with aristocracy and /or nobles present. The table had mostly foods I was very familiar with so I spent little time there. I had a few chats with people here and there which were enjoyed. My most prized “possessions” for that festival came as I was headed out.
I was heading back out to the entrance which would lead most efficiently to my vehicle. I saw two ladies at a simple fold up table. The one was around 5 feet 9 inches tall, fairly slender yet not thin, having a dark blonde hair, and fair complexion. She was wearing old style blue colored Norsk clothes. She was obviously of Scandinavian descent without question in my opinion then. I will call this one “Lillian”for discussion purposes. The other was closer to 5 feet 7 feet tall, medium build, brunette hair color, with a light tan, and modern American clothes. This lady is nicknamed “Kara” for discussion purposes. The more Norsk appearing of the two looked like she was in her mid twenties while her companion was probably more like late twenties or early thirties. I was able to have what I thought was a decent chat with both. The younger appearing one had a Norsk accent when speaking Engelsk. I did not make fun of it as I know I will have one once I learn Norwegian except mine will be Americansk. I was able to learn that she has been here in US for only about 2 years. She is going home to Norway in June 2003. She did explain that Bøkmal was the leading Norsk written language even though Nynorsk is closer to the spoken form of Norsk. It had to do with European Union joining Norway did. Her companion or colleague had spent over 9 years which meant I was a clueless Americansk until she spoke what sounded like crystal clear Norsk effortlessly to her colleague. Then I knew she was not “Just another American” lady. She too is going home in June 2003 as she is also homesick.
I found out both were here, this Scandinavian Festival, on behalf of Den Norske Sjømannsmisjon. I acquired a pamplet about this church from them along with some very nice tasting Scandinavian candy(*1) they were selling for church fund raising.
Even though I felt like asking for their first names, there really was no point. As I said, they were both going home to Norway in June this year. [Guy Note 1] [Guy Note 2]. Even if I do go visit the Sjømannsmisjon where they might be found on any given day, I do not expect to encounter either one. The Sjømannsmisjon is inside a good sized American city. The local Sjømannsmisjon they were from is not that far from me. I can get there by car in about 3 hours on most days. The problem lies in that time is one way therefore I would need roughly 6 hours travel time plus how ever long I wanted in that area. Thus I can only consider going there on my weekend and even then, it would be a once or twice per quarter deal on average. US gasoline is simply too much per gallon right now.
Local Sjømannsmisjon Facts(*2) have been gleaned from the pamphlet I acquired from these two Norsk ladies.
I have been able to ascertain where this local Sjømannsmisjon is. The less obvious Norsk lady was nice enough to over the pamphlet with me. I do plan on going over there at least once. Unless I find a closer supply of this candy which is dang nice, I have one known source and one only; Den Norske Sjømannsmisjon. Before I forget or just decide not to mention it and drive everyone crazy, the englisk translation is Norwegian Seaman’s Church.

I do warn people that the “funny” looking symbols are there for a reason. Norwegian does not have the same alphabet English does. Pronunciation is different as it has many silent characters.

One of them is Norway ( www.norway.org ) which is created in America by The Royal Norwegian Embassy.
If you want news about Norway and Norwegians in English, this is a darn good place to go. One of the current main page links is about “New browser a fine alternative to Microsoft AP, via The “Boston Globe” ( ( http://www.boston.com ) , February 6" [Boston, MA 02125 ] which I suspect I know about. I attempted to go find this article without success. My theory is this article covered Opera which is a absolutely fantastic browser. You can actually plan on the browser to work quickly surfing the net and not fiddling with it. It is a Norwegian software application with its homepage ( www.opera.com ) with numerous listings in British and German newspapers. It will run on various Windows boxes, Linux, Mac, OS/2, FreeBSD, and QNX. It is my browser of choice as the speed difference is dang fast compared to Netscape. It does not have any near the security problems of M$ virii ware Internet Explorer.(*1) If you want to know why you should consider switching to Opera, I suggest its “Why Opera” ( http://www.opera.com/whyopera/ ) page. Slashdot ( www.slashdot.org ) has an article on Opera 710 for Linux today ( 04122003 ) I found when I pressed the wrong keyboard button.
Something else the Norsk site forgot or I missed is coverage on Selida. Selida is another Norsk application. The net site ( http://www.amaryllis.8m.com/ ) was pointed out to me in a freeware newsgroup I visit periodically. It looks good and appears to be a nice HTML editor yet it did not function too well on my computer. I suspect an interaction between it and Windows was the problem or even possibly a Microsoft hidden feature to discourage me from using any non Microsoft product. Those have been discovered during the trial of Microsoft. The newest version is 210 with a service pack. I think I shall give it another try. Now if you want a WYSIWYG editor that I can recommend, I suggest AceHTML 5 from Visicom Media
( http://www.visicommedia.com/ ) in either freeware or shareware varieties. It is what I am using now with Selida’s apparent failure on my machine. CoffeeCup 9 ( http://www.coffeecup.com ) may not be totally out of the game yet.

I am thinking that “Lillian” and “Kara” may not approve yet I may do so anyways. I have the pamphlet I acquired from them. I have the net site of the main organization they belong to. I am seriously thinking about doing these things...
A) I may go use Sjømannsmisjon home for translation target.
B) I may use the pamphlet I acquired from them as translation target.
C) I may do both. The pamphlet first and then when I have that down, go do Sjømannsmisjon home page.
I would use these as translation targets; I would study Norsk until I could translate one or both of these into English. Naturally since most translation would involve the computer(*1) especially later on, no one is going to see them online unless I get clear and explicit permission from Sjømannsmisjon home. And I shall not even consider do that until I know I had the translation perfect as possible. A select few who I know not now would get to see both forms privately in non copyable form or as close as I can get it for learning purposes. The translated copy would probably be encrypted to prevent theft. I am not going to do that crap(*2) you may be thinking.

I have found a minor tool for my learning. It is a net site that allows displaying its UI in many languages. Two of these languages are Norsk(Bøkmål) and Norsk(NyNorsk) as well as English.
I am becoming slightly alarmed as I finding two different ways to spell Norwegian in Norwegian.
A) Norsk
B) Norske
The difference may be one is Bøkmål and the other is NyNorsk.
I am concerned about how English is written. Again I am finding what looks like two different methods. It is quite probable that one is Bøkmål and the other NyNorsk. These are Enlisk and Engelsk. I am going to have to find out what the problems are and either get them fixed or get them properly noted.

I have done little to teach myself Norsk in more than 3 weeks. I simply have not had time. I will try again on reorganizing my life so I have some time. On the plus side, I did not set any unrealistic goals for myself. I know better than that.
I have used some Norse on internett in URL’s in my hotmail account. I do not appear to need it any more as it was created for a specific reason. Still, I may keep it for a month or two.

I think I have figured out what “Velkommen til kirken” means. This is on Den Norske Sjømannsmisjon net site and that pamplet I have from them. My guess is litterally “Welcome to the Church”. How I got this is simple. I was thinking how I might find a place closer to me which sold Scandinavian candy. I remembered a place I have not visited in some years. On one official net site which it has 3 that I know about I found “Velkommen til “ [place]. Now since I do not want anyone having any idea where I live, I can not name that place. Velkommen is Welcome. The “til” should mean “to” or “to the” depending on the sentence context.
[ I checked my ordbok. It says I was very close It has “til” means “to, for, until” from “till” engelsk. kirke means church or chapel. Velkommen is “Welcome” as I suspected. So if a native Scandinavian comes up and says “Velkommen til hjem” the general message is “Welkome to my home” even if I did botch the exact phrase. ]

All the klokken tolv data was all taken off a net site for the local chapter sjømannskirken without permission. I did it for learning purposes. A church/chapel net site will not contain known falsehoods nor will it likely be in non standard language form. It will also contain data for the lay person. This is exactly what I need short of getting a job that pays enough for a one on one or one on many instructor. That would be better yet is currently very non availible for financial reasons.
I think that is enough for one day. I might get some more done later this week.
I have and have not violated a self created rule. I was not originally going to post any complete translations here on the net for legal reasons. I have not done so. I am not going to post any church proper documents here. I do not think there is any harm in taking snippets of Church net data as long as I make it clear where I am getting these snippets from. A mass conversion from Norwegian to English would be trouble I have no doubt.

I have found a Royal Norwegian Embassy not that far from me. Since what I want to do is learn Norwegian, they ought to have some references towards this goal. I am going to find out just as soon as I can. I think I may stop in on my way home from work Monday.

I thought I had found a Royal Norwegian Consulate darn close to my residence. It was implied incorrectly and probably an excessively tired me that another existed. That was a major mistake. I will not go to the address of the implied one ever again. I will have to make do with just the one that is a little farther away which is a real and true Royal Norwegian Consulate.

Internet Explorer is constantly having new security and code blunders even in the new version 6 discovered. The rate I have seen so far is rougthly one serious error per 3 weeks. Do you really want something this poorly written as your main browser? I dare you to go over to Symantec site http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html and not find dozens of security breaches concerning IE in a 6 month period. I dare you to go over to CERT ( http://www.cert.org/ ) and lookup IE.

Guy Notes

I would give “Lillian” an 82 on the my babe meter. She obviously had brains and personality which shined through even with her accent. Mind you I had gone to this festival seeking Norwegians above general Scandinavians. The slightly older appearing one is a looker too. She had made the “mistake” of not wearing Norsk clothes or at least darn obvious Norsk clothes. In retrospect I think both were almost most the same on the visual scale.
I give "Kara" a 74. If "Kara" had been dressed in Norsk clothes like "Lillian" then I would probably have given her a between 80 and 84. Does this mean I would automaticly discard a date request with "Kara" for "Lillian" without due consideration?
Would I make a date request towards "Lillian" and if I failed try again with "Kara" on the rebound? The first one is a "No" with some reservations. The second is a clear "No way Jose!" as it would fail and backfire in my face. Wether or not I would go for "Lillian" over "Kara" if the oppertunity presented itself would depend on several factors.
A) If both were wearing comparable clothes, who looks better to me?
B) Who has the better apparent intellect?
C) Does one have any suggestive body language implying interest in me?
D) Does one or both have any indications that they are arleady taken aka married?
These factors and some that I have not mentioned would give each a DRR (Date Readiness Rating) score. Who ever had the higher DRR would be the one I would have tried dating if conditions had been much more favorable. This DRR is definitely personal from dude to dude.
And lest I forget I have a reminder. As we are checking them, the ladies out, so are they checking us out. Please do try remembering that fellow dudes.
Because "Kara" has been here longer, I suspect she may have taken Med School here. It may be she compleated some lesser study course and stayed in America for reasons unknown.

Me: “Yeah [Insert Correct Name] lives in Bergen,Norway. That is an 10 hour flight. So I have a noon departure. I get there about 6AM which is horrible for me. I should make Bergen via bus or train about 4PM”
“You are going to have a date with a chick named [Insert Correct Name] at 5PM?”
Me: “No, I am going to take a nap, shower, change clothes, and then take her out for an early evening date. n. We are going to visit a Norsk Fjord for a romantic sunset. “
“And this [Insert Correct Name] is worth all this? Huh How do you get there about 0600 hours if it is only a ten hour flight.”
Me:”Heck yeah dude! That is easy. Norway is 9 hours ahead of us here. And there is a brief layover in Hamberg, Germany the plane makes. I fly Lufthansa to Germany and then catch SAS to Norway. ”

“Yes I do. I think I may have found my life mate. The only problem is coming home again.”

Hyper theoretical Situation Notes
A) Neither “Lillian” nor “Kara” are their real names as far as I know. It could be I have guessed correctly yet I doubt it.
B) While there is a 9 hour difference between my time zone and Norway, the flight times both ways are a wild guess.
C) I have no idea what kind of mass transit exists between where I would land and where I need to go. Nor do I have any idea on how efficient they are.
D) I have no clue where in Norway either lady actually lives.
E) Each “romantic weekend” would cost me somewhere between $900 to $1400 US. I do not have that kind of money.
If I was going to try this, dating Steph would have been easier. Steph lives or did live in Toronto. I can drive to Toronto given sufficient time where I can not do so to from here to anywhere in Norway.
I will never be sure yet I do suspect I did receive a “He is kinda cute” or “He is cute” comment from “Lillian” or “Kara”. Since my Norsk was best described as 1 hair above zero on good days when the three of met, I can only guess by body language I saw. Which I do intend on changing hence this page group. I even informed the two Norge Ladies about this. I am not sure if it was a mix of “You are kidding right?” or “Oh, that is good.” a combination of these or something else that was not spoken yet perceived. Of course “Ehh he is (snipped) “ or “What is his problem?” is possible too.

“Kara” was not a slouch. Her “crime” was she did not have Scandinavian or better yet Norsk “oozing” off her. In retrospect, she is almost as good a looker as “Lillian” is. Given her time her in America, I suspect she was studying for a higher course than “Lillian” was.
