Introduction

I have been playing RPG’s for over 24 years now. Yes, I started with what is known as the grand daddy of all Role Playing Games, Dungeons and Dragons. Only back then it was called Basic Dungeons and Dragons. It came out around 1978 as far as I am concerned as that is about when I discovered it. I was just a fifth grader back then who happened to have a neighbor, Brian K., who along with one of his buds, Paul S., that had just started playing this weird game. I gave it a try and found I liked it. My buddy Chris E. and I both discovered D&D at the same time. He created a Magic User as they were called back then. I created a fighter that I named Glendar. Glendar was a fighter who drew heavy influence from Scandinavian Viking myths and ideas. It goes without question that had I started a decade later, Glendar would have been a barbarian at least and possible a barbarian with Viking kit. We had 3 games and then Advanced Dungeons and Dragons came out. It was just the players book at first yet Chris and I both instantly recognized that this is what we wanted to play not Basic D&D. So we switched over way back in 1978. To make things even more interesting, we lost our DM and other player. Brian and Paul went off to college. So we did what anyone could do in that situation; Chris took over as DM. He beat me to ownership of the 4 core books. Yes, there were only 4 core books way back in 1979.

          Player’s Handbook

          Dungeon Master’s Guide

          Monster Manual

          Deities and Demigods

That was all you needed for unlimited adventure possibilities in the realms of AD&D in the beginning. Later, great books like Unearthed Arcana, Fiend Folio, and Monster Manual 2 came out. Unfortunately, a book came out that was not so good called Deities and Demigods 2nd printing. This had most stuff that 1st printing had except 2 mythos were missing. It seems TSR,Inc did not have legal rights to put the 2 mythos into the first printing so they had to reprint and re-release that book. I have one or more copies from the original release so I was happy.

Alan T. joined in for AD&D early on as I remember him showing me AD&D PH before anyone else. Terry was recruited by his big brother Chris to join us as well. The others when applicable I can not recall for those early years. Years went by with the other players coming and going. Sometime in 1980's we started experimenting with other RPG’s that had been coming out. Many I did like with others getting one session and then discarded as an RPG not for me. Chris, Alan, Terry, and myself stayed together in our game choices. The one game I remember Alan introducing to us is Traveller. Traveller is like AD&D in that it is a RPG. It is quite different as it is science fiction based not high fantasy based. I want to say Chris introduced Top Secret yet that is not necessarily true. It might have been the rule lawyer, Chuck Potter, who did this. I know Grant A.and , Scott S. both were AD&D players yet I do not remember them all; They are too many.

Untold hours were spent during summer months gaming plus countless hours on weekends. I remember playing as best as I could at college during class breaks and of course at home. I remember playing many, many hours all around school and / or work from 1986 to 1994 when I was done with school as any sort of constant thing. I remember having major gamefests during school breaks and on 3 day weekends. Now I play when I can

with 7 hours a week as a good game week. This is how things are now by necessity. I miss those earlier years yet I know I can not go back to them. I do not remember when I met him except it was sometime during the late eighties with 1987 the best guess. John Taylor and I met via a mutual friend, Andrew Melachon ( Family name may not be spelled correctly. ) whom we both have not seen in many years. Through John, I met Mike Ladd. Mike was one good gamer who has given up his game dice for diapers and travel. We will miss Mike.

Description

Grand

This RPG game is part of my grand campaign. Even if it is not played on a week to week basis, I will be returning to it in part or whole eventually.

Major

This RPG holds significant interest to me. If it is not played now, it is because I do not have time.

Minor

An RPG I might have kept a copy for use in other more desirable RPG’s.

Demi

I tried this RPG and then quite possibly sold off any components for it.

Grand Campaign

My grand campaign is formed of the major games with some of the minor ones. The result of this fusion is a campaign that can go any direction with total flexibility, adaptivity, and creative. It is also weird, strange, different because you never know what you will encounter, never know what could be just up ahead, always wondering " what will happen next??".

Common RPG Rules

1.         If the host has a no smoking rule in effect, do step outside for all smoking needs. And please do try to keep these smoke breaks to a minimum. Some people do have medical problems with smoke.

2.         Most hosts are not rich. Please bring your own grub and drinks or make advance arrangements for when you get there for some sort of session grub and drinks fulfillment.

3.         Do not mark up the furniture at your host’s place.

4.         While a few people will allow drunk and /or stoned fellow players, most do not. If you want to get plastered or get “chemically enlightened”, do so away from the game absolutely. Showing up drunk or stoned can earn the player a free trip to local Greybar Hotel series of hotels for one or more nights...”Checking in is so easy it almost is like breathing. Just do something jacked up. Extreme restrictions apply on checkouts. “ You have been forewarned about potential consequences of showing up drunk and /or stoned!

5.         Do not be a rule lawyer. Rule lawyers are only a point or two above email spammers on the “Despised Dregs O’ Society” list.

6.         Do contact the next game host in advance if you have any questions on how to get there. It is annoying if all save one or two are missing for that weeks game session because someone can not bother asking for directions in advance.

7.         Do contact the next game host if you have any concerns or potential problems that need addressing. Please do this in advance so once every one arrives, the game can quickly get going.

8.         Do understand that most hosts are not fond of having broken furniture. If you are doing something that could break some furniture, do not act surprised if you are told to cease and desist or even asked to leave.

9.         You are guests of the host person. Privacy invasion is not taken lightly by most people. Please do restrict your wandering to areas explicitly indicated as acceptable. Do consider all bedrooms as absolutely off limits at all times without explicit permission to enter in advance.

10.       Do not be a foul mouthed twit if the host finds it offensive.

11.       Some people do not like open weapon displays. Since this is a game not real life, please leave the weapon or weapons in the car. Real life weapons are not acceptable at almost all gaming sessions. Weapon possession can lead to local Greybar Hotel chain check-in without prior notice. You have been forewarned.

12.       If you have a problem come up with someone during game sessions, solve it peacefully.

Advanced Dungeons And Dragons

My campaign is a hybrid variant one. It is based on 1E with generous helpings of 2E. I have generous amount of house rules that are used. I have recently started adding some small pieces of 3E that I thought could be useful post editing; All 3E material that I liked was edited for better campaign handling and as such is not unmodified if compared to its original source. I do act as a player in 1E, 2E, and hybrid campaigns with 2E default. I do more referee work than player as my co-adnd freaks like my campaign.

I am semi active on the main AD&D / D&D Usenet group rec.games.frp.dnd with posting done in threads that interest me. I do pay some attention to Usenet group games.frp.dnd-utility with posting done in threads that interest me.

RPG Material Submission

I do take submissions for any RPG that I ref. I care not if you are a old player or a newbie player or fellow ref. If you have something you think might be a good addition to my campaign, please submit it to me. Unfortunately, I do insist on some procedures and /or rules to be followed. These procedures or rules are quite rigid with deviations few and spread out very far.

Here is the process I use...

1.         If you want to introduce anything for a RPG I ref, give me a neat copy that falls under my acceptable submission rules at least 14 days in advance of when you want to first use it.

I do have most desired format for submissions. These are covered below.

I do have formats that I will not accept listed below.

Do not bother with anything that is from any other RPG if it only exists in that game format. RPG ports that have been ported over to appropriate game format will be fine.

If you are a 3E fan, zip it. There are too many flame wars over “2E vs 3E” for my patience level currently. I do not want to hear more of this junk in my face. This is especially true if the game is at my residence. Any one who can not follow this rule risks immediate personna non grata. ; The plain english version is simple: You are not welcome at any game where I am ref from now onward. You are not welcome at my residence.

3E Fans who have an idea based on 3E yet make the effort to port the idea into what ever desired target game is can do so and is encouraged by myself. Just do not play 3E preacher or risk personna non grata state.

2.         I will examine it over many days and make a decision.

Do not rush me. If you rush me, I will default to standard position and disallow this contribution or idea.

Do not expect me to allow this contribution just because you are submitting it.

Do not be surprised if I require editing before allowing it into my campaign. The modification(s) could be anything I deem needed before I will allow this material into my campaign.

If you made this submission while drunk or drugged, expect it to get filed in the round filing cabinet, real or electronic, without delay.

3.         When I have made it, you will be notified. All decisions are final for that specific version. If the idea changes, you may resubmit. The changes need to be substantial not minor. You are allowed to ask why I did not allow this material or idea; I will inform you why it was rejected.

4.         No material may have clear copyright and /or intellectual property violations.

Acceptable Submission Types

I do accept RPG submissions in many different forms. I do have preferred submission methods as indicated below.

The listing order is most preferred to least preferred.

1.         I will accept electronic submissions via net as long as my “Safe Net Rules” are followed exclusively and to the letter. This is my most preferred form as a submission can come when ever the submittor feels like and no waste does exist. Please do browse my allowed file formats before sending me anything.

2.         I will accept electronic submissions via hard media as long as general safety rules are followed. Please do browse my allowed file formats before sending me anything.

3.         I will accept printed hard copies of ideas.

4.         I may accept hand written copies of material and /or ideas on a case by case and person to person basis only. I reserve the right to not accept a hand written copies from anyone with or without stated reason(s) at any time. I reserve the right to require a partial or full rewrite of any hand written material from anyone with or without a stated reason or reasons at any time.

          I will accept photo copies.

I will accept type writer printed copies.

I will accept computer printouts. This is the preferred choice for all hard copy submissions.

I will accept emailed or web downloaded submissions if they follow my “Safe Net Rules” exclusively and to the letter. .

Safe Net Submissions

You want to send me something by the net whether net download or by email. Here is how it must be done or I will never get them.

If you seek to send me the material by email with attachment, you must do these things...

1.         You must check with me before sending anything as I tend to delete unexpected attachments without delay regardless of who supposedly sent me the email; I am virus and worm aware. I may allow you to send me anything that follows my safe email rules without advance notice on a case by case basis and /or a person to person basis.

2.         The submission by email must be in an acceptable format. HTML is always forbidden. If you send me any material in HTML, I will delete it and forget about it. I will accept ASCII text, RTF text ( RTF Help files may not be acceptable. I shall do RTF Help files on a case by case basis. ), PDF, Word Perfect 6 plus , and allowed non SFX file archive formats only without explicit permission in advance. I will not accept anything in a Micro$hite format (doc xls ppt mdb ??) at all ever!! I may accept Ebook(*1) files. PDF files must be created that allow printing and saving data. If I can not do that, I will almost certainly reject your submission. All executable ( exe ) files whether SFX file archive or stand alone Ebook require advance notice on a file by file case or it will considered a virus and deleted without delay.

3.         You may use a popular file compression scheme if desired provided you tell me in advance what will be used and I have no problems with that file type. I will not accept executable files whether SFX or self displaying if you have ever had virus problems due to lack of protection or effective protection comprehension; You are simply not trust worthy enough. Any file format that Winzip 8 or WinAce 2 can handle should be fine provided you notified me in advance. I do prefer these file formats...zip, ace, rar, cab, and arj to the exclusion of all others. I can not accept pak, sea, or Blackhole files as I can not uncompress them at this time. That could change in the future.

4.         Do not fail to confirm email arrival. I can view non checking with non interest.

If you want me to download the file off your net site, I can do that if the following rules are followed.

1.         Your net site must not require Micro$hite Internot Exploder! If your net site is customized for use and /or effects that require, mandatory use of, Micro$hite’s Internot Exploder, I will do without your class or kit easily. My default web browser is Opera with Mozilla’s Firebird as backup and Netscape as auxiliary. If Opera can not handle it nor Mozilla’s Firebird, I am likely to not bother with your net site. If I like you as a player, I may call up Netscape. I do not care if Micro$hite’s browser can or can not read your site, it just can not require it.

2.         No bleeping sign in’s will be tolerated! If you require a sign in for net site access, I will go away and not come back.

3.         When I go to close the window containing your site, I had better not get any sort of bleeping trickery like 2 dozen other windows auto opening. If I do, your file will be deleted. This shite pisses me off almost as much as Micro$hite Internot Exploder only sites or Beeping beeping required sign in sites.

4.         The file containing the class or kit must be available in one of the net standard files if compressed or standard multi OS format if uncompressed. Uncompressed acceptable formats are plain ASCII text(MS DOS or Unix Text (txt)), rich text format (rtf), portable document files(PDF), or Word Perfect Document(wpd). All other uncompressed file format are 100% unacceptable to me. Compressed file formats I will use are zip, ace, rar, cab, and arj. Furthermore all compressed files must uncompress to an acceptable file format type. Any compressed file that uncompresses to anything by Micro$hite except RTF will be deleted without delay or perusal; Your class or kit is not allowed at this time. All other file format of non acceptable nature will be deleted and a complaint / non acceptance letter auto generated.

General Safety Rules

This section really should not be needed. However, I will go over it lightly so there is less confusion.

Do not give me any media that appears it has been used for trash hauling.

Do not give me any media that is physically quesionable.

Do not give me any media that you know is having problems of any sort.

Do not give me media that keeps generating various error messages and you are too lazy to check out.

I do prefer optical disks over floppies. I can currently accept CD-R, CD-RW, mini CD-R, and mini CD-RW. I can take 720KB and 1.44MB floppies. All floppies must be formatted for use on a IBM clone hardware for use under either MS DOS or Win3/Win3WG/Win95/Win98/Win98SE/WinMe/WinXP. I do not currently accept Linux OS based floppies or Linux OS based optical disks. I hope to have this changed in the future.

Make sure your media label is readable.

Make sure your floppies are all together for submissions that require more than one floppy. This should be rare are few classes will take more than 1.44 megabytes total space.

Do not give me any acceptable media with much non gaming material on it and expect me to not look at it.

Do not try giving me any media if I know or find out you have general security practices especially in AV and /or Net safety deficiencies.

If you do not make a real and true effort to keep current on general computer safe operations, do not bother making any submissions to me by media or file. Anyone who sends me any trojan horse or virus or worm ladden file is in hot water with me. If your computer becomes noted as a viral warehouse, all media submissions from you are banned indefinitely until further notice; You may only make acceptable hard copy submissions. Your email will be killfiled if you attempt to send me any non pure text only messages.

If you need or want any media back, please say so before giving it to me. While this is generally well known, I may have this idea the media is mine to keep. If it is a CD-R, this is considered default.

RPG Material Submission Notes

1: Ebook Readers

I will currently allow Ebook’s that require a reader as long as these rules are followed.

1.         The Ebook reader must be freeware. I am not going to buy any commercial application just so I can use your material submission. If the reader is not free, non malware, and completely harmless I will not use it. Since I will not use it, your Ebook based submission is null and void. If the Ebook reader is spyware or hijackware or trojan horse like, forget about it. If it comes bundled with one of these, I will not touch it.

2.         I will not download and install 7 plus of these apps. I may allow up to 4 Ebook Readers.

3.         I reserve the right at any time to require all Ebooks needing a reader to use one of a few specified Ebook reader applications of my choice or be deemed non acceptable.

4.         Any stand alone Ebook had best not require me to go on a learning curve. If I can not figure it out in 5 minutes, I do not need this material.

5.         Self Displaying Ebook files must be a true executable. I will not accept any other self displaying Ebooks type files.

6.         All self displaying Ebook files must allow printing its full contents to a file.

7.         All self displaying Ebook files must allow printing its contents to any attached printer.

8.         Self displaying Ebook executable files are absolutely not exempt from general safe file rules especially virus and worm free state.

9.         Ebooks that use HTML source code and then are compiled into a true exe are allowed.
