This is a review of the Nintendo Gamecube Preview disc that became available in Mid-May. It isn't really for sale, but some stores were (and are still) selling it for about $10us (I got it for $15cdn). The disc includes 5 playable demo versions of upcoming GCN games. The playables are Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell), Soul Calibur II and Viewtiful Joe. The disc also features 2 downloadable GBA demos, a full version of Dr. Mario(NES) and a Demo of Wario Ware Inc. Mega Microgame$. There are also quite a few videos, one for every playable, the others include, Zelda: The Wind Waker, Madden NFL 2004, NCAA College Football 2004, F-Zero GX, and Star Wars: Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron 3. In this review I will review all 5 playables, each with a outlook rating, either: Low(not looking good), Medium(this could be worth another look), or High(this demo makes you drool for the full-version).

Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut: This is an okay demo, but it doesn't really intrest me that much because I own, played and finished the orginal Dreamcast version of the game. The new character models look better than the orginal, but they are way too shiny. I only played one level of the demo, but the frame rate in that seemed improved over the orginal. It's hard to say if this game would be worth it, maybe more if you never played the original, because it is better than Battle. My outlook rating is: Low - A halfassed port of a game from 1999, with very few good improvements.

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg: This game was actually better than I thought it would be. You have to push around eggs to destroy enemies and get around the levels. Cirtain eggs hatch different animal sidekicks, that have different power that can help you. In the demo level you have to roll down a big ramp and into the man level, you then must hatch a golden egg to rescue the elder. To complete the level you must then grab the courge emblem. There is an alternate level to try, which it quite a bit harder, to access it hold down the A Button while you press START on the title screen. My outlook rating is: Medium - An interesting concept, but the camera was pretty bad. We'll have to see if there is more to the full game then just pushing eggs.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: This maybe just me, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get any where in this demo. I tried somethings but ended up getting killed. It seems like it is simular to Metal Gear Solid. I only tried the demo once, and I might try it again. I'm sure it is as good a game that everyone says it is, but I can't play these games at all. My outlook rating is: Medium - Cool graphics, looks like fun, but I can't play it very well. Besides the Full-version is available now anyway so rent or buy that.

Soul Caliber II: Heh. Another game that I kinda sucked at. This game I could play better than Splinter Cell, but not that much better. I managed to beat all 4 oppenent that are available in the demo. Unfortunatly you can't play as Link in this demo. I would say more but I'm not sure about this game, all I did was mash buttons, I'm not really sure how to fight properly. My outlook rating is: Medium - You'll wanna check out the full-version and so will I. I wanna difficulty select so that I can practice on easier oppenents (even though the 4 in the game were fairly simple, if button mashing can beat them).

Viewtiful Joe: This game here is the absolute GEM of the package! The game looks really cool, with it's cell-shaded comic book style visuals. The gameplay is the best part of the game, just how the game controls, and feels, it is classic videogame all the way. When an enemy attacks you a skull icon will appear high or low, what you must do is press either down(for low) or up(for high) so Joe will dodge the attack. If you are successful the enemy will get dizzy and you will be able to combo him for Viewtifuls (They are the V's that you get and are your score). After the intial set of enemies (some of the fights throughout the demo, are done in sections, with your score and performance rated (try to be Viewtiful), also with a bonus for not taking a hit) a old hero, fights you and shows you how to unleash the "Heroness" within you. And with the words: "Henshin A-Go-Go!" you become Viewtiful Joe and gain a few unique special moves. First can double jump, second is SLOW, and thrid is MACH SPEED. Slow is kinda like "Bullet time" except way more effective here, after you dodge the inital attack of your enemy, you can begin to punch or kick him, then you activate Slow with L and begin to kick butt in Slow Motion. The is really cool with multipule enemies (and some objects), in which can earn hundreds of Viewtifuls a combo (I've got up to 700+). Mach Speed isn't really used in the demo for attacking but it can help you get around faster. My outlook rating is: High - An amazing demo, even better than some full games that I own. You really must play Viewtiful Joe to understand it. It is going to be a must have this October! I can't wait!
