"A certain Lord Hutchinson mentioned a very recent
instance (February, 1811), of a man who had been 30 years in the Guards;
and , his conduct there having been irreproachable, and who there, because
he had been absent a day, had at the age of sixty, been sentenced to receive
300 lashes, and had the full sentence actually inflicted on him.
From G.R. Scott's Flagellation: The Story of Corporal Punishment.
Depicted is a typical British Army "flogging at the halberds".
Two men will apply the lashes, alternating after 20 to 25 strokes have
been inflicted.
