The image above is from an Anti-Slavery publication.  It was a common method of punishment to tie the poor individual to wide-spread stakes in the ground for the beating.  This scene was repeated uncountable thousands of times across the American South.  The horror of the image below is without question.  One can only imagine the agony that this unfortunate man endured.  Through all of the previous images and photographs that this web site has displayed, I do not believe any come close to the impact of seeing the  ACTUAL  SCARS on this slave's back:   Scars, that I am sure, the man had for the rest of his life.  This  image merely carried the caption "Scars from a whipping on a slave's back.  Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. April 2, 1863."
