Crono & Dekar's and Flea's Chrono Trigger FAQ

This FAQ contains some of the questions I get most often about Chrono Trigger. Flea helped me with some of the questions. If you have a question about Chrono Trigger not mentioned in this FAQ (or any other game featured on this page for that matter), then email me.

Notes: Strategies for fighting a few bosses can be found in the Tips & Tricks section. If you're having problems with the game and you're using a ROM, please check out the Emulation Questions to see if your problem is in there. Also, I do not own Final Fantasy Chronicles, so I will not answer any questions specific to the PSX remake.

Important Note: The Ending Questions and Miscellanious Questions contain major spoilers! You have been warned!

Basic Gameplay Questions:

Q: What do I have to do to be 100% innocent at the trial?
A: At the fair you need to:

And at the trial answer the questions with the following answers:

Questions AskedYour Answer
"Who start this whole mess?""I did"
"Did her fortune temp you?""No." (Unless you tried to sell her pendant, then say "yes").
"Are you sure? (about the fortune)""Yes"
"Did you steal something?""Yes" (Asked only if you stole the lunch.)

(Your only reward for being innocent is an Ether in the jail cell.)

Q: Where are the parts of the Masamune?
A: Go talk to Frog at the Cursed Woods. Then go to the Mystic Mountains and battle Masa & Mune. Finally go back to see Frog at the Cursed Woods.

Q: I talked to Frog but he won't give it to me!
A: Go see Tata at his house. He will give you the Hero's Medal. Then talk to Frog in the Cursed Woods and open the pot.

Item Questions:

Q: In 600 A.D. on the southern continent in the northern town, one of the houses has a cabinet with a sparkly thingie in it. I try to open it but I can never open it, it always says it is locked. How do I open it?
A: Go back to the Cathedral in 600 A.D. (Remember? Where you had to save Leene?)  Upon entering the secret passage, go to the left side of the church, and walk up the stairs into the room. (There were three or so treasure boxes in there I think.) Search the cabinets and you will get the Naga-ette Bromide (if you try to get it the first time you go to the cathedral, three enemies will attack you). Note: The bromide won't be visibile in the Items menu. Go back to the place with the shiny thingie and try to open it; it will still be locked. Then talk to a guy on the left side of the room, and he will exchange the Bromide for whatever's in the cabinet. You can now open the cabinet and get what's inside, a simple Magic Tab.

Q: I got the Mop for Crono, but it’s really weak.  Does it do anything special?
A: The mop is the worst weapon in the game and has no apparent use. I have no idea why it was put it the game. (Maybe the designers thought it'd be cool just for fun. Also, you can make up an ultimate challenge with it like: "Let's see if I can beat Giga Gaia with Crono having the Mop." or something like that.)

Q: Wait a minute, how do I get the Mop?
A: Not that it would really matter, since it is the worst weapon, but you get it by using Ayla's Charm technique on a Nu.

Q: Where are the other fists for Ayla?
A: In order to get the other fists, you have to increase your levels. Ayla needs to be at level 76 to get the Iron Fist and at level 96 to get the Bronze Fist.

Q: Where is the Valkereye?
A: It is in the back of the Northern Ruins/Hero's Grave. You will need the flying Epoch to find it. At 600 A.D. in the back room with the two black chests, open both of them, but choose NO when you are asked to take the contents. Go to that same place in 1000 A.D. One of the two chests will have the Valkereye in it, I forgot which one it was :-).

Q: Where is the Gold Rock?
A: First, you will need to talk to Cyrus in the Northern Ruins/Hero's Grave in 600 A.D (if you have not already done so). Now go to the Denadaro Mountains to the spot where the FreeLancer throws rocks at you. Change Frog to the lead character. There will be a small dark green circle somewhere in that section. Stand in the middle of it. Let the FreeLancer hit you with the rocks. Eventually, Frog will catch a rock and it will turn into the Gold Rock.

Q: How about the Black Rock?
A: If you got past the part where the floating island in 12,000 B.C. is destroyed, you can't go back and get it, sorry. In Kajar you open the books in the following order: Water, wind, fire.  A bookcase will open and behind it will be the doll with the Black Rock inside (when you check it).

Q: In the instuction booklet on page 18 Crono with at Level ** and Next Exp. at 20 with very little equipment. Is there a code for this?
A: No. In many Squaresoft games' booklets, there are impossible situations. Another example of this is the Secret of Evermore booklet in which there is a picture of a game with all the relics, which is impossible to get. The screen capture is probably taken from a debug version of the game.

Q: What does the cat food do?
A: The cat food is used to gain more cats. After you get a second cat (for 80 pts at the fair), get them more food by entering any of the three games (10, 40, or 80 pts) that you already won a prize for. You will then get cat food. Keep getting cat food and you will eventually get more cats (this does not help you at all, but it is pretty cool to do!). You can view the current amount of cat food you have in Crono's room in the little bowl. Cats only seem to eat the food when you get more food.

Emulation Questions:

Note: The following is pretty much just the FAQ included with ZSNES reworded. If this is the emulator you use and you're having other problems or need additional info, please check the zsnes.faq file.

Q: I'm in 2300 A.D. and I can't see anything in the domes. What's happening?
A: This is a problem with your emulator and transparencies. To fix this you need to enable transparecies by selecting one of the 16 bit color display modes (320x240x16b or 640x480x16b). If the display modes don't work, your video card probably doesn't support VESA, in which case you can download the
Scitech Display Doctor to enable it. If you are using ZSNES, instead of doing the above you can temporarily deactivate backgrounds by pressing 1, 2, 3, and/or 4, and you can enable them later by pressing 6. (I imagine you can deactivate backgrounds with other emulators, I just don't know how.)

Q: How do I get the L+R+A password to work in the Arris Dome?
A: This isn't literally an emulator problem; it's because the keyboard can't input two characters at the same time. Try setting L and R to the same key and setting A to the Home key. So if I made both L and R as the PageUp key, then if I pressed PageUp and Home the password should work.

Ending Questions:

Q: Is it possible to prevent Crono’s cats from running away by buying a lot of cat food? If so, would Crono’s mom not disappear at the end of the game?
A: Sorry, no matter how much cat food you buy they'll still run away and Crono's mom will always tell you that, "you should have taken better care of your cats!"  However, she won't disappear in the Epoch subtype ending and the cats won't go through the Gate. (To get the ending "break through" the first Lavos form by warping Epoch to 1999 A.D.; this won't work if you already beaten the first form of Lavos).

Miscellanious Questions:

Q: What does Gaspar mean when he says, "Someone close to you needs help, find this person, fast." ?
A: He is talking about Queen Zeal. He is basically telling you to get through the Black Omen. Once you get through the Black Omen, you can take the Gate to The End of Time, and he will say that the person is at rest.

Q: Can I change back Frog to human?
A: Yes. Just kill Magus the second time you fight him (it's in 12,000 B.C. on the North Cape). In the ending of the game (and only in the ending) he will revert to his human form. (To the girls from Flea: in icon, Glenn look pretty cute!!!!!!)

Q: Is there any way to get Schala back?
A: Sorry, there is no way to rescue her or get her back. Wanna know what happened to her? Yeah, well, so would I. Either Square ran out of time while developing her character or just decided not to completely develop it. There is some speculation on whether she lived or died, but no one really knows. However, you can find dozens of fanfics on the Internet (including mine) which gives ideas. Note There are a few rumors that circulate that say you can bring her back, but they are just that, rumors, not actual facts.
