In Star Trek: First Contact,
the Federation's most lethal enemy are headed straight for Earth: The Borg.
These powerful cybernetic half-machine beings operate as one mind and have
one purpose: to assimilate others into their collective. Any resistance that
they encounter, as any Borg will tell you, is futile. But this doesn't stop
Captain Picard and the Enterprise 1701-E from foiling their plans. In
the movie, the Borg cube approaching Earth is destroyed by a fleet of ships, but
not before a Time ship emerges from it, going back to the 21st century when
warp drive is about to be tested for the first time by its inventor, Zephram
Cochrane. Following the ship into the past, the Enterprise manages to
destroy the time ship (yet it had managed to fire several rounds of its weapons at a missile complex
in Montana). Little does Picard know that several Borg have secretly boarded Picard's ship during the
battle. Picard and other crew members go to the surface to see what damage was done by the Borg's weapons,
and Cochrane's warp ship, the Phoenix, (which seemed to be the target of the attack) had some minor damage. One of the wounded,
a woman by the name of Lily Sloane (one of the engineers for the Phoenix), is brought to the ship for treatment, but she is to be kept unconscious during the whole time.
Soon Picard realizes what the Borg have tried to do: destroy the warp ship before Cochrane could make its historic first
flight the next day, which would result in first contact with an alien race. This encounter would change the
future of Earth forever, and result in the eventual creation of the Federation. With this in mind, Picard and company
make it their mission to find Cochrane and make sure that flight happens, or the future will fall apart. Back on
the Enterprise, the Borg's presence is now exposed, and Picard returns to the ship and quickly assembles
several armed parties who must secure the ship from the invaders--not an easy task. Soon confrontation with the
Borg results in several crew members lost (they are actually turned into Borg themselves). Picard's crew is slowly
being turned against him. On top of all this, the Borg manage to capture the crew's only non-living officer: the android Data.
Upon being introduced to the Borg "Queen", Data soon realizes that she is trying to manipulate him in order to help them with the takeover
of the ship. She does this by trying to fulfill Data's life-long wish: to become more human.
In the meantime, Doctor Beverly Crusher must disobey Picard's orders to keep Lily unconscious, for the Borg are invading Sickbay.
Lily manages to escape from the others and gets lost on the ship, confused about where she is. Eventually she meets Picard, who
(with much effort) manages to earn her trust. Meanwhile, on the surface, Riker, Troi, and Geordi (who have lost contact with the
Enterprise) try to convince Cochrane to make his scheduled flight the next day. However, Cochrane cannot seem to accept the fact
that the entire future for Earth rests on him alone; he doesn't see himself as a very important man to deserve all this respect they give him.
He just wants to retire and is in this mission for the money. Apparently, the three must get him to go on with the flight.
Picard's memories of his days as a Borg ("The Best of Both Worlds", Part I and II) come back to haunt him. He begins to
express the anger and rage inside of him; he wants to have revenge for what the Borg did to him. Lily senses this and is able to make
him see that continuing to fight the Borg on the ship is hopeless: the only answer is to self-destruct the Enterprise and all the
Borg on it while the crew leaves in escape pods and land on Earth. Picard proceeds with this plan but stays on board to rescue Data.
However, he will soon find that Data is no longer his old self: The Borg Queen has apparently convinced him to take his place among the Borg and
assist in their plans. He disengages the self-destruct countdown and all hope seems lost. The Borg are now in control of the Enterprise.
Cochrane finally appears willing to go on with the mission which will "break the light-barrier" as well as bring Earth into contact with aliens
for the first time in history, which will pave the way for a new era. All systems on the Phoenix are ready, and, with Riker and Geordi accompanying him, launches the small ship.
Once in space, they prepare for warp drive, not aware that the Enterprise is taken over by the Borg and is currently arming its quantum
torpedoes. With Data following the Queen's orders, he fires three torpedoes at the ship. Picard watches on as he knows the future is now doomed.
Suddenly the torpedoes end up just missing the ship, and it is now clear that Data never actually switched sides. Telling the Queen that "RESISTANCE IS FUTILE," he slams his fist
into one of the containers in Engineering, which releases a red gas that potentially can destroy any living tissue that comes in contact with it, knowing that the Borg cannot
survive without their organic parts (this had been the original plan briefly mentioned earlier in the movie). Picard quickly climes to safety, but the Borg Queen follows and hangs on to him while the cord he is holding onto is about to break. Data
then emerges from the deadly red gas and pulls the Queen to her death, consequently destroying all of the Borg on the ship. Picard and his crew have won, and First Contact goes on
as it was supposed to, the Vulcans being the first aliens to meet humans. The future is restored, and Picard says farewell to Lily. Using the Borg technique of time travel, the
Enterprise returns to the future, where it belongs.
