Here are a couple of screen shots from Quake.
--Me
--Be fast. When you're being attacked, don't just stand there! Run!! Just as in Doom, it is a good idea to run often (Hold Shift key). Just be sure to avoid running into those bouncing grenades!
--Be aware of your surroundings. Don't look up and down just for the scenery. Use it to help spotting enemies (It takes some practice to get used to aiming this way, but once mastered, it will help you considerably.) This option especially must be used when you are being attacked by flying Scrags.
--Beware of the Ogres. These fierce enemies are armed not only with large chainsaws (for use when you get close), but they have an unlimited supply of grenades, and their only target is you. As if this isn't bad enough, their own grenades can't hurt them (or other Ogres!) So, that little Doom trick of getting enemies to fight each other won't work with these guys. You'll have to take them out before they can become real threats, so try firing at them from a safe distance and do as much damage as you can before they get in grenade firing range. At this point, try moving aside when grenades are thrown while you continue to fire at them. Getting to a high place might be a good idea when fighting these creatures.
--Be wary of traps. Be careful: in Quake, there are numerous traps that you may encounter on certain levels. These traps may be in the form of nail guns on the ceiling or walls. Or they could be large moving spikes that may poke you from above or push you off a platform from the side. Use extreme caution and avoid getting hurt by such devices. Even better, use them to your advantage. For instance, try leading an enemy in the way of a moving spike from the side, and watch him fall to his doom. Or make him follow you into a room with auto-nail guns, and lead him right into the firing path of one of them!
--Make sure your enemies won't be getting back up. When dealing with those regenerating zombies, try using grenades to completely destroy them. Otherwise, they will keep getting back up and attacking you (and this becomes very annoying!) Also, try aiming your grenades at them when they are in groups, so that one blast can take a bunch out.
--Learn your environment. Try familiarizing yourself with the level you are on. It will make it much easier when you know where enemies will appear, where to get important items (such as guns and health), and where the level's exit lies. Also, secret areas can be a big help, too. So try to get to know the level like the back of your hand. But even then, there is no guarantee that you will get out alive...
And remember, you can always USE THE CODES.
NOTE: To use Quake codes, you must first toggle the pull-down menu by pressing the ` key in the upper-left hand corner of the keyboard (the key to the left of the numbers). Then you may type in any of the following codes for the desired result.

*The no clipping code causes you to stay on the same level, heightwise. So, if you try to go through a flight of stairs with no clipping, you will end up inside the stairs, with the floor they go up to above you. So this code may cause some navigational problems (meaning that it just may be hard to get where you are going with this code on.)
**Gamma X.X changes screen brightness, where X.X ranges from 0.0 (brightest) to 1.0 (darkest):
0.2: Winter Wonderland
0.5: A good average brightness
0.8: Spooky!
1.0: Quite Dark
Step 2: Open Quake.
Step 3: Start a new game or restore an old one (you may notice that a certain track on your CD is playing)
Each level is assigned to a certain track. To switch between tracks, you may enter the following into the code menu:
(where ## is the desired track number on the CD)
