Why I Need A Staff
And how to apply
The moment has come. I have come to a point in this webpage where I have so much stuff, or want to have so much stuff, that I need a staff. Really. The site started about two years ago by one person, maintained only by him since, now needs kind souls to help him out.
Why do I need a staff? First and foremost, handling all the sections of the page has become pratically a chore to me; I never wanted it to become that. Between the Combo Pokemon, Combo EarthBound Spells, Humor, new links, and just sorting them out, my time has been consumed with boring look-over, then copy and paste work. While the result of this work may be satifying to you, the reader, it has gotten real boring, tedious, and just... *blah* for me to do.
Second, as you may have noticed, the updates have been more spread out. This has come from looking over entries and trying to balance the work on everything I want to update. I don't like updating late; I really don't. Late updates are the best way to stop people from visiting your page. But if I had a staff, the updates would be closer together. Each staff member could handle one or two sections, which would make it a LOT easier for me. No, if I get a staff I won't be leaning back resting, I'll still be working on it too, it's just I'll feel more relaxed doing so and I'll be doing less stuff at one time.
Now, enough about me. Let's focus on how a staff would help you. As already mentioned, with a staff updates would/should not come as late as they are now. That's good. I'm not sure how I will work the whole What's New/Update List stuff with a staff, but I'm sure I'll figure that out.
With a staff comes the possibility for sections to be more detailed than they are. Imagine, each section updating a decent amount each and every update. Possibly, where appropriate, the staff member can give their own insight into something.
Right now, game sections are limited to games only I have played. But if a staff member played a game that I have not and is willing to put the time into making and maintaining a game section, then this page can be a whole lot better. If a staff member comes up with an idea for a regular section, they can go ahead and do that too. Note: For both game and featured sections, they would have to be approved by me. Also, for reviews, instead of always having to trust my opinion, another staff member can give insight and maybe argue with what I say.
So, you see, a staff would help out a LOT when it comes to this page. Off course, if I indeed got a staff, then the name of this page would definitely change, but I already have a name picked out.
You might be that staff member I'm looking for. But what would you get for being a staff member? Well...
- Of course, you would get to maintain the section(s) of your choice (if I give the one(s) of your choice to you, that is). You would get primary credit for maintaining the section(s). If you maintained, say, something like Humor or Combo Pokemon, you would get to choose which ones get in and which ones are ditched. I would not interfere.
- I would probably be more likely to listen to you for advice on something about the page (about the layout, sections, etc.). Not that I don't listen to people who visit the page, it's just that I'm more likely to listen to people I work with.
- If you want to hire someone under you, say if I let you handle a game section and you want someone to handle I particular section, you could (with approval from me, of course). Also, if you had a friend that wants to become part of the staff, not necessarily under you, then, like mentioned above, I would be more likely to listen to you.
- If this site were to get hosted by something other than Geocities that had the offer, you might get a email @pagename.
Um... that's about it. I'm not going to say that "you'll have the joy of working at one of the fastest growing websites," because that just sounds corny, and saying your webpage is one of the best doesn't necessarily make people think so. I will say, though, that you'll work here, at a place I hope to get more popular. You will have a great impact on what will be on this page.
Semi-Application
So, you've looked this over and decided, "Hey! I wanna become a member!" First of all, I'm going to be honest, I'm not going to accept everyone. Probably not even most people, but it doesn't hurt to apply. Second, I'm still unsure about the whole "staff" thing, despite everything I previously said, hence the title prefix, "Semi."
Off course, there's requirements and preferences for joining. These are the general ones, and below each position (as listed in the application) are the addition requirements and preferneces for each particular job. These are the general requirements and preferences:
- Must be someone I can trust, both in general and to get their section(s) updated regularly. If they're on vacation or something, I'll understand, but it's a different matter if the person rarely or never updates.
- Must be able to type well. Staff members should generally not type sections as if they were in a chat room. In other words, capitalize and punctuate sentences, and don't use "shortcut words," like "b4", "u", and "r," unless either is done purposely for some effect or it's just a typo (hey, we all make mistakes ^_^). Things like contractions (don't, can't), words written as the common pronunciation (wanna), and smileys are all fine.
- Must not intentionally try to offend people (especially in letters section). I want people enjoying to this page, not flaming it. On the same note, staff members should not curse every five seconds. Minimum cursing is allowed, though. (Cursing doesn't offend me, personally, but it may to some visitors.)
- Knowledge of HTML is highly preferable, although not required (with the exception of the Page Layout Deigner, where it is).
Anyway, here's the form. Everything with a * is required information.
Oh, also, don't try for applying for Fanfic or Editorial Manager under "Other" in the application, because I've already decided that I'll handle those.
I'm still not quite sure how I'm going to do this while on Geocities, but unless things drastically change, I should be moving to a different location sometime in the (hopefully) near future.
If you have any further questions, then feel free to email me.
