Glepp the False

Description: Glepp is an Ouphe Gnome, a rare variety of gnomes, brought from the crossbreeding of a gnome and a goblin. Some cases have also been reported of a gnome-kobold crossbreed, but these creatures appear as being the same stock as the goblin variety, and are considered to be the same by all other races, and indeed no real difference exists. Glepp is of kobold variety. Glepp is of average height for an Ouphe, reaching just above the average of three feet by one inch. The small height of the gnome is slightly deceiving, however, because the gnome has a slightly hunched back, which shrinks the creature by a height of three inches. The Ouphe's posture is also noted by the creature's long and gnarled arms, which reach nearly to the gnome's knees. Glepp possesses a wide, broad face, with deeply etched features and very large, slightly pointed ears. His wide mouth consists of many small sharp fangs, evidence of it's primarily meat diet. Glepp is clean shaven, but not naturally so, as his hair grows in small patches over his head and face when left unkempt. A small tiny ridge of bone runs up his spine all the way from the top of his head to the end of Glepp's stump like tail. The ridge starts at the top of his head in two rows, starting barely an inch above each of his eyebrows, and then joining together at the base of his neck. These ridges appear at fist as small horns, and in fact are slightly serrated, but this is not the case. This spiny ridge ends in a small stumpy tail, which is only about three inches in length. This tail is non-prehensile, and completely unusable, and only serves as an interference when attempting to fabricate clothing. Glepp's skin is a mottled combination of browns, dark greys, and shades of black, appearing on his skin in an apparent random order. Glepp's eyes exit as a dull, glazed over grey color, but becomes bright red when excited or angry. Glepp's voice is heard as thin and raspy by those not accustomed to Ouphe Gnomes and their language, but it is in fact a common trait among Ouphes. The diminutive gnome weighs in at a mere eighty-five pounds, although this cannot readily be seen by many, as Glepp prefers to adorn loose clothing, within which can be hidden minor spell components from view of any but the closest scrutinization. Glepp usually prefers to keep his chosen profession and abilities hidden from those it deems unworthy, mainly anyone that the gnome comes into contact with. Glepp favors clothing of dark colors, made of soft cloths that do not radiate as much heat in the infrared spectrum as those commonly seen among creatures of the Underdark. These clothes are usually in the form of a loose fitting shirt, and a pair of paints of the same color and fabric. He typically sports a belt with more than a few belt pouches hanging from it, from which is also hung a small blade, relatively large in comparison to the gnome. He will commonly be seen wielding a thinly carved staff of some unknown wood, which he uses as a walking aid, and when need be, a weapon. Glepp is not fond of jewelry and will normally not be seen wearing it, as it attracts predators of the Underdark, and the greedy intentions of other beasts as well.

History: Glepp was born into a small goblin tribe, as is more common than one might think for one of gnome stock. This goblin tribe was relatively small, numbering in the low eighties, but was surprisingly self-sufficient, due mostly to their slave upkeep. He was born to a gnome being held as slave labor for the goblins of that tribe. The slaves of this tribe of goblins were relatively kind in the treatment of their slaves, compared to others of their kind. Glepp was not born as one might think, being born to a slave as he was. Glepp's mother actually had a loving relationship with a fellow slavesman, a fell kobold. The goblins welcomed the birth of the child into their slave pens, as they saw the occurrence as having the ability to train the slave from youth, a much easier task than converting a free man. Glepp's mother, Felga, realized this early on, and vowed to set the child free when the gnome was of age enough to be able to fend for itself in the wilds of the Underdark. As such, Glepp was largely raised in an environment of servitude through most of his childhood, although his mother shielded him from this as well as she was able. Glepp's father, Regleg, tried to keep up most of the slave work that he was able to, in order for Felga to be able to care for the child whenever possible. When Glepp became the age of five years, his mother began to teach him the ancient language of the illusionist, in hopes of giving the child some chance at a future of life in the Underdark.

Glepp's infancy went on much like this for quite some time, until a time when the chieftain of the tribe of goblins unintentionally insulted the chieftain of a neighboring tribe, which set of a chain reaction and eventually starting a small war between the two tribes. This war left Glepp's tribe of goblins largely outnumbered, as the opposing tribe had members numbering in the mid hundreds, somewhere in between a hundred and forty and a hundred and seventy members strong.

Glepp's tribe, the Blackfoot clan, was all but forced to equip their slaves with arms and set them against their newest rivals. Glepp was barely the age of ten years, but was given a weapon none the less, as the goblins tried in vain to teach him in it's use. As the goblins prepared the slaves for war, their front lines were busy fighting small battles against the other tribesman. The time for the slaves to assume the role of warriors was coming soon.

Regleg and Felga sat huddled in a corner of their respective pen, discussing the matters of the war to come. There they lay and devised a plan of safety for the three of them. Felga came to Glepp, and gave him her most precious possession, a book of illusions. She relayed to Glepp that should they not see each other again after the battles, that he was to study the book in her name. She informed Glepp that while there currently was not much to the book, it could be added upon in the future, and began to tell him the process of copying scrolls into the book. Shortly after this, his father showed him the rudiments of using the short sword that had been given him by the goblins. He hoped Glepp would not need the item, that he and his mother would be able to protect him from harm until their plan had been acted out, but it would not hurt to be able to defend oneself.

Within the week the slaves were involved in the frontlines of the battles, and were not faring altogether well, considering their vast military training, was barely two weeks in the making. During the chaos of the battles, Felga gave the sign to Regleg, the sign that would initiate the workings of their plan. Regleg made a mad dash for his boy, scooping him up in his arms, and heading for the nearest exit from the fray, hoping against all hope that he would not be seen amid the confusion around him. Felga ran towards the other side, in an attempt to meet them at the tunnel, or at least shortly outside of it. As Felga ran towards the opening of the cavern, she was hit in the leg by a crossbow bolt from enemy fire, to the shouts of routing out the slaves were fleeing before them. Regleg's eyes grew with horror, and he shielded the boy behind a stalagmite, and proceeded to run after his mother. As he reached her, the goblins were upon them, Regleg almost made an attempt to flee to where his son lay, but decided better of it, realizing that he could not lead the goblins to his son. Regleg drew his shortsword and challenged the nearest goblin, throwing curses in its direction. The goblin responded as Regleg knew that it would, and began his duel to the death with the hated beast. Another goblin arrived, and attempted to join in the fray, to uneven the odds against the kobold. As he reached to draw his hammer on the way to where Regleg stood, he was tripped up by a furious Felga, who began to chew on the goblins throat, refusing to let go, beating on it with all of her strength until the beast lay still. At about this time Regleg had finished off his adversary, and was cleaning his blade on the clothing of the dispatched goblin. He reached out for Felga, and tried to half carry her to where their son lay in wait.

As they arrived to the hidden location, a goblin raced past them, and clutched at Glepp's arm, drew a dagger, and threatened to kill the boy if the two would not drop their weapons where they stood. Felga let out a gasp of horror, and promptly dropped her weapon. Regleg did the same, and saw his boy slide the shortsword into the side of the goblin, a very weak hit, but a distraction none the less. Regleg picked up his weapon and charged the goblin, who fumbled for his crossbow, and fired a shot past Regleg's ear as he charged. Regleg ran the beast through, and then went to gather up his love. As he did so, he saw an all too short crossbow bolt protruding from the body of his mate. As he knelt down to check on her health, tears began to well up in his eyes as he realized the worst of his fears. She would never again be there when he awoke, nor would she ever be there for her child in the future.

He felt a rage well up inside of him, and for a moment contemplated returning to the fray, to deal out as much punishment as he could on the goblins, both aggressor and fellow master, but thought better of it, realizing that his boy was still alive, and that he needed him now more than ever. He scooped the teary eyed boy up in his arms once again, and made out for the darkness that was the Underdark.

Not long after the two had been traveling the Underdark, some five to eight years of dodging predators and foraging for food, they came upon a series of traps designed by something hiding in the shadows. These traps were built not to kill or for food, but simply for protection and the desire to be left alone, not a far stretch of imagination for either of the two travelers. They proceeded on to find a small grouping of creatures similar in appearance to Glepp, who was amazed to find someone of his own kind.

The other Ouphes took to Glepp immediately, as most Ouphe will do, due to the rarity of their race. They are normally suspicious of other races, but did not have too much of a problem after Glepp had explained to them what they had been through, and what Regleg had done for him. The two stayed with the group of four Ouphe for nearly three years, teaching the two the arts of trap making for their own protection, when some of the Ouphe's traps went off. Upon further inspection, the Ouphe pieced together enough clues to realize that goblins had set their traps off.

Realizing that Glepp was now safer than he could ever hope to make him, Regleg's old anger at the goblins returned in full, and this time he intended to do something about it. He set out that night to find his hated enemy, and to strike at them while they slept, hopefully killing enough of them that his love's death could be appeased, at least in his own mind. As he tracked and then eventually located the goblin camp, Regleg drew his knife and began to execute the sleeping goblins, attempting to do so as quickly and quietly as possible. As he finished off the third of his victims, he heard shouting, the goblins were aware of his presence. He looked around with a start to see the goblins forming around him, and he started to flee in the direction he had come. As he ran towards his camp, the goblins were upon him. He fought valiantly, and if not for his sons looking for him, he might have died that very night. Glepp and his fellow Ouphe Gnomes found the battle soon after it had started, and proceeded to drive the goblins off. Glepp used his powers of illusory magics to fool the goblins into believing that there were indeed hordes of Ouphe Gnomes come to the rescue, causing the goblins to think twice about their victim, turn tail and run.

Regleg was in critical condition. The Ouphe brought him back to their lair, and attempted to tend his wounds. Glepp had a talk with his father to learn about what had happened. Regleg told him of his never relinquished anger and unfulfilled vengeance he had held for the goblins ever since his mother died. Glepp convinced his father to never be so rash again, it was not worth it, and to look at what had almost happened because of it. Regleg relayed of haw his young son was wise beyond his years, and that he had definitely gotten it from his mother. He agreed never to endanger his life or the life of others for such worthless vengeance, but was still in dire condition. It seemed that one of the goblin weapons that had struck his father had held the effect of a very rare and extremely slow working poison, to which the cure was practically non-existent. Practically, but not quite. It was rumored that there existed such a cure, and Glepp intends to find it. Glepp set out to find the cure, and left his father in the care of his only friends in life, the four Ouphe's that had taken to him and his father quite well, without whom, the pair may not have survived these long years.

Current Sketch: Glepp is currently in search of a cure of his father's cure. He also intends to honor his mother and continue his study of Illusion, to which he has grown quite a fondness. He uses the Illusions under his command for numerous things, most noteworthy of which is to avoid combat of any kind, as he has not made a very good fighter from himself in the years past, despite his fathers training of the shortsword. Glepp does, however, hold a natural disliking for goblins, much like his father, for all of the pain that they have caused him, his father, and especially his mother. Glepp has come to realize that although the clan that had sired him was relatively good hearted, most of the goblins cannot be trusted. He is rather open minded to most races other than goblins, and even waits for their initial intentions before waging war on any of their kind. Glepp has also been known to use his Illusions to disguise himself from others, as he has found that most races disapprove of his gnarled appearance. These deceptive magics have earned him the nickname 'The False.' Among his most trusted, this only seems to be because of the pranks he enjoys playing at times, but to his enemies, he uses his powers to create intrigue, deception and lies with the best of them, and thoroughly enjoys any strife he can cause among their ranks with simple deception magics.
