Appearance:
The Olinara are a race of people thought to be the original inhabitants of the lands of Cyuk. They were later named and discovered by the humans that were brought to that world, and in the ancient tongue, Olinara means simply 'lesser man.' Olinara resemble humans somewhat, but with a less developed appearance. Their features are much less distinguishable from those of humans, being less defined as well as being of smaller proportions. Their ears seem to have recessed almost into non-existence, with just a small portion visibly protruding from the sides of their heads. The Olinara have a faintly tinged blue skin, which seems to have a slight translucent quality about it. The hands of the Olinara do not end in fingernails, nor does their body display signs of excessive hair growth of any kind. They are by nature muscularly deficient, appearing as little more than skin upon bone. Olinara see through eyes that appear to be glazed over with a milky substance, giving them a look of non-intelligence or ignorance. Those not intimately familiar with the race have a difficult time distinguishing between members of the same sex, as their limited facial features leaves little to discern between their identities.Olinara converse through the acquired ability of telepathy. This ability is not the same as the psionic talent of the same name, the most striking difference being that the Olinara are unable to converse telepathically with creatures other than those of their own kind. A few of the Olinara have learned true telepathy, however, and are able to converse as such normally. The Olinara possess no vocal cords and are thus mute and unable to learn to speak languages in the more traditional sense.
Combat:
Olinara are by nature non-combative, and seek to avoid physical conflict whenever possible. They are relatively defenseless, and as a culture are not learned in the arts of war or its weaponry. In centuries past, when the Olinara were first discovered by the human inhabitants of the lands of Cyuk, they were so far removed from violence that they often mistook aggressive behaviors, and as such were frequently caught unaware, making them easy victims. They have since learned the ways of man, that they cannot be trusted, and seek to avoid them whenever possible. The Olinara view humans as instigative aggressor types, and trace all of the roots of conflict to their stead. As Olinara age, they gain in their ability to defend themselves mentally, gaining one defense mode, and the ability to maintain it for ten turns a day, for every twenty years of age.
Habitat / Society:
Olinara build their societies around the family, living in colonies where each member is related in some way or another. Olinara once thrived as a farming community, harvesting various grains such as wheat and maize, which they were able to prepare in a variety of ways. As their homelands began to be overrun by humankind, their lives and diets became much less stable, instead relying on the foraging of varied roots and berries, while living a largely nomadic lifestyle. Their views of other creatures are such that they believed that the animal life in the surrounding areas did not exist for them to take advantage of, but rather to coincide with, and as such, the Olinara are largely vegetarian by nature.Olinara societies are governed by the general good will of the villagers, not having to rely on authority figures of any kind in order to keep the peace. They exist under no written laws or regulations, instead surviving by an unwritten code of ethics with very little punishment for transgressors. The most severe of the offenders would be cast from the community, where they would be free to join another.
Olinara views of ages past centered on the mirth and happiness of the community, where each member would gladly make sacrifices in order to assure the greater good of the community. With the coming of the humans and their impending slavery, these views have since shifted to a simple complacency, seemingly content just to live their lives with as little conflict as possible with their captors. The lives of the Olinara are seen as being completely devoid of emotions, but the Olinara do indeed continue to find merriment in their most precarious of predicaments.
Ecology:
The Olinara are largely self-sufficient, being able to grow the crops which provide for their clothing as well as their dietary needs. They survived for hundreds of years doing so, and if not for this ability they would surely have died at the hands of their captors ages ago. The Olinara lived off of the lands in which they roamed, being careful to not take more than was necessary for fear of killing the land. Their down to earth nature and passive souls allowed them to survive virtually untouched by the wildlife of Northern Aredakar, despite the fact that the Olinara would have been unable to fend against any kind of resistance. The fit as well into the ecosystem as any beast was able, allowing them to survive for generations without the need for any kind of militant armaments or defense of any kind. This led to them being taken over quite easily by the invading human forces from the south, who took them into slavery instantly upon their discovery. They produced tools and musical instruments from the raw materials around them, some being similar to those found in other cultures, and some being unique amongst themselves. It was with these instruments that the Olinara crafted the works for which they have come to be known. This paced harmonic melody that seems able to combine all emotions into a single piece, and able to inspire a different reaction from each being willing enough to allow the complex artistry into their souls. They have been able to continue this practice despite their existence in slavery.
Variants:
Through generations of slavery to the human inhabitants of Cyuk, there has risen an ever-growing number of Olinara whose intolerance has escalated to the point of aggressively active resistance. These Olinara, referred to as 'the vexed,' are often runaway slaves, living just off the fringes of human societies, waiting for the appropriate time in which to strike against their former captors. Although usually found living a solitary existence, in which only small victories can be won, there are remote communities of free Olinara, mostly hidden from the prying eyes of human society. These communities often start as small groups of revolutionaries, who over time will smuggle like-minded Olinara from their life-long prisons. The vexed seek nothing more than the freedom of their people, stopping short of nothing to accomplish their goals. The non-combative nature of the Olinara hinders the vexed in that they are rarely ever able to learn the rudiments of offensive weaponry, instead resorting to unhanded tactics in order to undermine their former captors. With a majority of the vexed, their goals revolve primarily around the freeing of their race, but more than a few are penchant on the destruction of their captors as well.
Player character Olinara are almost always of the vexed variety. Most vexed are of roguish classes, with a few enhancing their abilities as psionicists. Olinara ability scores are adjusted by a plus one to both wisdom and intelligence, and a minus one to strength and constitution.
