Sol’s Retreat

Darkness rises, overwhelms
Shadows deepen and disperse
Light scatters, wanes to night
Dire ill is close-at-hand
The darkness hides, protects,
But what does it shroud?

Darkness smothers, obliterates
The comfort of sight,
Is gone with the day
The doors are all locked,
And inside they pray,
But what do they say?

Darkness vanquishing, obscures
There they sit, huddled inside
Motionless, they hearken
Finally comes sleep, rest, and peace
Only with it come nightmares,
But what do they see?

Darkness nefarious, base and smug
Reveling in their cowering
Taste, smell, the feel of their horror
It listens, it answers, and it complies
It feeds them their most unwanted desires
But what do they fear?

Darkness reigns, dominates
Minds grow weak from his power
Hearts grow sick from his entropy
Hatred he breeds, and nurtures
Fear he grows in their souls
But do they know?

Darkness complacent, complete
It loosens its hold on the land
Leaving its mark in its victims
There it leaves them to foster
To take shape in the form of man
But why is it so?

Darkness wanes, shudders
It fades from the warring skies,
Parting for the light of Sol,
Leaving to gather, to grow,
For when it returns triumphant
But when, you say?

Darkness recedes, retreats
Away to its brothel
Trepidations forgotten
They sing, dance and play
Welcoming the joys of day
But when it returns?
