Three large scaly reptiles slowy crept towards a circle. They
stepped into the light, their bodies glimmering in the starlight. They wore
large ancient painted masks as they chanted in a strange language. Two cream
coloured echidna watched with rapture. Suddenly the chant ended in a
thunderous "Cha!" as they pointed their decaying wooden staffs towards the
mother's womb. Suddenly her stomach began to glow, a luminous pink then
blue. It had begun.
Arthair, a dusty red echidna scuffled out of the darkness smiling.
"They give you their blessings." He sighed contentfully. "Your wife shall
give birth eight hours and fifty one minutes after that star has disappeared
from FLiCKiE Island's sight." He looked at the male echidna as he pointed at
the glimmering silver star. "Now go, you haven't much time." Arthair sighed
as he disappeared into the darkness along with The Ancient Walkers.
The two echidnas nodded as they scurried out of the crater, and
headed back to FLiCKiE Island. Eight hours and fifty one minutes after the
star's silver-shining light disappeared from sight, it began. The blessing,
on which The Ancient Walkers had laid upon the mother's womb, wasn't just
any blessing, it was an insurance, an insurance that everything would stay
balanced: just how they had planned. The Ancient Walkers held an old leather
bound book in thier hands as they quickly scribbled the words: Silver Star.
Not too long after the burial of his wife, the egg began to crack. A
little black nose emerged from within the sticky pink ooze, then a head,
eyes closed, it pushed the shell open with it's tiny three-fingered hands.
Apollo smiled as his daughter opened her crystal blue eyes and squinted in
the light. He washed her off, and named her Silver Star. He was soon to
briad her mangled messy hair and drees her in a baby pink floral sun dress.
In no time at all she started walking and talking, awkward at first, but
soon she became to grasp stability.
He taught her every night about her mother, her past, her future. He
read her stories and fantasyland novels he had heard from his father long
ago. She sat in rapture, hanging onto his every word.
One day, Silver Star sat patiently waiting for her father out on the
steps. She stared at a light blue coloured bird. It "FLiCKYed" at her, in
almost a mocking way. She looked insulted but then stood, and chased the
bird. The bird stopped, surprised at the pup's sudden movement, then tore off
into the sky "FLiCKYing" all the way. She smiled to herself, then turned
around to her father's disapproving look. HE explained to her later that she
must live in harmony with the FLiCKiE Birds, or else she'd never survive.
She smiled. Usually her father would make up stories and tickle her at the
end, to reassure her he was only joking. He didn't this time. Her smile
turned slowly into a frown. He turned and walked out of the room leaving a
leather bound book behind. Her curiousity getting the best of her, she
opened the book to find wonderous swiggles across the pages. She took out a
crayon and doodled on a spare piece of paper, knowing all too well not to
doodle on her father's books as she had done before and recieved a great
punishment for it too. She immitated the lines and loops on the page, she
repeated, over and over until she had perfected one page and then another
and another.
Apollo, noticing his daughter wasn't tagging along behind him as
usual, stopped. Listened. He heard the scratches of a crayon upon paper. He
crept towards his daughter's room and peered inside. He saw her doodling, on
something, but what? Not his book, no, she had learned all to well the last
time she had done that. He slowly sneaked inside and leaned over his
daughter. He gasped in amazement. His daughter was writing out all the pages
of the dictionary in Ancient Echidnian. He decided it was time for her to
learn what they meant.
Long teidious hours were spent with Silver learning the language.
She longed to run about and play in the sun as other children do, but
instead she was confined in the study sounding out words, and writing them
over and over again.
Tha Ancient Walkers smiled under their giant masks. It had begun.
They sighed to one another. They knew she was special, and something would
happen in the near future, but her intelligence had surprised them all. This
they had not planned for, she had the brains of people ten years older than
her, but she didn't have the drive to use them. This would create problems
in the future for her.
Her father, a good echidna anmed Apollo, tried very hard to
encourage Silver Star to learn to read and write. He knew she had the
intelligence to, only being 1 and a half Silver ignored her father's
consitant pleas and bribary. Her father, whose patience had worn thin,
locked Silver Star in the study one day, promising to let her out after she
learned to use her great gift. Silver screamed and threw temper tantrums in
fits of rage.
Her father was not cruel, he longed to open the door to his
daughter, but he knew he must be strict if he was to make her learn somehow.
Time wore on and Silver gave in, she began to recite chapters in books
continously, and write letters and words furiously on paper. Her father
heard her, and saw her work. He eventually opened the door to his angered
daughter and greeted her with a chocolate echidnian shake for her efforts.
Her pout disappeared as soon as she viewed the shake. She ran towards it
only to have it pulled out of reach. Her father made her promise that no
matter what happened to him, she would continue her studies. She agreed, but
questionned why, would he be leaving soon? Her father shook his head and
smiled, "Just precautions." He sighed as he nervously looked out of the window.
The morning after she had turned two she had decided to go outside
for a morning walk. She sighed as she wobbled down the creaky wooden steps.
She gained her balance when she stepped unto the soft grass. Then she
skipped upon the cold grey stones playfully. She heard a loud noise come
from the kitchen. She turned and said "Daddy?" She wobbled back up the steps
and peered inside the doorway. She gasped in horror as she watched her
father being dragged down the backdoor's steps by two hooded echidnas. She
screamed after they left, she burst into tears as she ran into the kitchen
painfully. She stopped when she saw the dark red pool slowly engulfing the
lime green floor. She fell to her knees and cried. The blood soaked her
light pink sun dress as she lay there sobbing sorrowfully.
The Ancient Walkers shook their heads disapprovingly. They had no
choice, it was the only way if she was going to be who she was supposed to
be. They felt a pit of sorrow in their hearts. A feeling they had not
experianced in years, as they watched the young white echidna cry in the
pool of blood. They had wished that they could've done this at a later date.
But her intelligence was so rapidly increasing, if they waited any longer,
she would have too many memories, to much attachment. It was best this way,
they agreed and slowly walked into the darkness once more. It had begun once
more.
