Background

Nid was abandoned by his tribe because he was born exceptionally small. He was found by a travelling merchant's family, who hoped to raise a strong protector. However, it didn't take long before they realized this infant would eat them out of profits and possessions long before they could use him.

At their next stop in the coastal town of Reefport, the merchant "lost" Nid in a dice game to the captain of the town militia, an incurable gambler. The childless captain and his wife civilized the Ogre as well as they could and gave him a sense of purpose.

Work

Nid has a regular job in the town guard; he is usually assigned to night duty. Occasionally he has other special assignments, such as joining the hunt for a particularly dangerous criminal.

Proud, brave and eager to please his superiors, he enjoys the rough-and-tumble of medieval justice. Reefport is in a very volatile area (for one thing, a local pirate leader is obsessed with taking the town), which suits him just fine.

Nid carries his club when on patrol, but most criminals surrender rather than risk fighting it out. In wartime situations, he uses his favorite weapon, the maul.

Personal Life

Child-like and good-natured, he lives by himself in a basement apartment near the guards' barracks. The apartment is spartanly furnished, highlighted by his shell collection and a portrait of his parents, drawn by his mother.

Nid has a special arrangement with the military cooks to prepare his meals and deliver them to him. The high cost of this arrangement is the main reason for his poverty.

Adventure Seed

Rumor has it a mercenary giant plans to attack Reefport on the next moonless night — Nid can't wait.
