Immortals and Deities

Some Immortals of Mystara have the same names as deities or other powerful beings of other worlds. These include e.g. Odin, Thanatos, Orcus, etc. Basically, there are two theories that you might use to explain this.

  1. If you use D&D cosmology, then obviously you don't concern yourself with AD&D outer planes; Mystara is in a different multiverse from all other AD&D worlds. Thus, these Immortals are unique beings not related to the deities except having the same name.
  2. If you use AD&D cosmology, it might be harder to explain why there are two separate Odins living in different realms. One explanations could be that the Old Ones who created Mystara have prohibited the deities from entering or firectly gaining worshippers there (much like the Lady of Pain prohibits gods from entering Sigil). Thus, some powers have created avatars who were in all respects like normal mortal beings, and sent them to Mystara. There, the avatars eventually achieved Immortality and moved to live back in the planes (thus indirectly giving the originating deities a follower base on Mystara). It is unknown to what degree the original deity can influence the Immortal that was 'born' from it; perhaps the new Immortals are completely independent, perhaps the deities can totally control them (although the thought of Orcus controlling two layers of the Abyss is frightening...)
