DT (DESIGN & COMMUNICATION) - A LEVEL |
ü | INDUCTION |
Term 1. Students are given a copy of the course description and requirements. They are then given intensive formal tuition in graphic skills, drawing, texture, sketching, colouring and DTP. The design process is explained to them. They are also taught how to tackle a design project, layout (A3), orthographic drawing and CAD. |
ü | SYLLABUS |
Pupils undertake a product design project which will use four out of the six available lessons per week. The remaining two lessons will take the form of formal tuition in: identifying a need, basic electronics, plastics, properties, ergonomics, design folder, research, manufacture and evaluation. |

Term 2. Promotional project (20% of final marks) - Students will use four out of the six available lessons per week and private study time to produce a project that will promote a GROUP - E.G: A theatrical production. The project will take the form of a poster or display stand. The remaining two lessons will be tutor led and the student will study design theory, message and media, illustration and graphic design and presentation techniques. |

Term 3. Design and the Environment - Students will make an in-depth study on the effect design has had on a part of the environment, which will include themselves, the home, the town and country's infrastructure. |

Term 4/5. Students spend this time undertaking a major project that has been agreed between the teacher, themselves and the examination board (40% of final marks). They will also be given a number of essays to write. |

The ability to work independently, research and seek out information; self motivation and able to communicate in a variety of forms both visual and written. |
ü | ASSESSMENT |
Coursework 60%: (Promotional project 20%; Major Project 40%). Theory 40%: ONE, 3 hour written paper |
ü | CAREER IMPLICATIONS |
An A Level in Design and Communication is a university entrance subject (in conjunction with other subjects). It is also a qualifying subject for a foundation course at a college of Art. As such it is a good foundation for any of the 150 design degree courses throughout the UK. |
