MUSIC - A LEVEL

ü INDUCTION

The entry requirement for all A or A/S Level courses in Music is a Grade B at GCSE and an instrumental/vocal skill of Grade VI - VIII. After an introductory session, explaining the possible routes through A Level, each student is guided in his/her choice of the most appropriate route for that student to follow.

ü SYLLABI

There are in fact 5 A Level Syllabuses and 4 A/S Syllabuses. These offer a wide choice, covering a variety of musical skills; which include, Aural Perception (an extension of GCSE listening skills), Musical Technique or Composition and Arranging, History and Analysis, Performance at Minor (Grade VI) or Major (Grade VIII), Dissertation, Music Technology, Sequencing and Multi-track Recording.

A typical route might be:-

A Level

1. Aural Perception

2. Musical Technique

3. History and Analysis

4. Performance major, Grade VIII

A/S Level

1. Aural Perception

2. Musical Techniques or History and Analysis

3. Performance minor (Grade VI)

ü SKILLS REQUIRED

A genuine love of music, and the self-discipline to keep up regular and concentrated practice on chosen instrument/s up to Grade VI Performance Minor, or Grade VIII Performance Major. A willingness to take up all performance opportunities both in School and in the community.

ü METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
Regular sampling of Aural Skills and History and Analysis skills will give students a good idea of their likely performance in the externally assessed papers.

Practical is assessed in two ways:-
