MATHEMATICS SEG
Mathematics is a core subject under the National Curriculum and as such is studied by all in Years 10/11. The year group will continue to be split into sets according to ability and National Curriculum level. The top set will take the Southern Examining Group (SEG) GCSE, Tier H -10 (Higher Level) at the end of Year 10. They will then go on to study A/S Mathematics. The other sets will be working towards the SEG GCSE, Tiers I or H (Higher or Intermediate Levels) according to National Curriculum levels achieved.
The National Curriculum in Mathematics is divided into 5 attainment targets, MA1 to MA4. MA1 is Using and Applying Mathematics which is assessed by projects and coursework and counts as 20% of the final mark. MA2 is Number and Algebra, MA3 Shape and Spaces and MA4 Data Handling. These targets will be assessed by 2 written papers which will account for 75%. of the marks. In addition there will be a 5% contribution from an aural test.
The coursework submitted for MA1 must include 2 pieces and should address each of the strands.
