MUSIC - Ed Exell. ELEAC
The GCSE Music exam is a logical progression from classroom work of Years 7 - 9. However, the opportunities open up for boys who wish to use skills in performing to their advantage. The individual composition requirement allows students to use their creative potential in a guided, satisfying way.
The examination is in three sections:
1. | Listening - externally assessed. | 30% | Special Option 10% | |
2. | Performing - internally assessed. | 30% | (i) | Performing on 2nd Instrument |
(ii) | Set Works | |||
3. | Composing - internally assessed. | 30% | (iii) | Commissioned Composition. |
(iv) | Improvisation. |
In the listening section, works will be studied with examples of rock, jazz, blues, music of India, Africa, the Caribbean and the Orient. Also a knowledge of Western European music from the Renaissance to the present day is required.
To aid the performances aspect of the course, all boys will be encouraged to have tuition on an instrument or voice.
The composing will be during Years 10 & 11 and the best put forward for examination. Boys will be encouraged to use the sophisticated Information Technology sequencing programmes available in the Music Department.
This course offers any boys with a genuine enthusiasm for the subject a varied and interesting course to follow which will increase his knowledge and understanding and hopefully enjoyment of music.
