Some general notes about my Robotech fanfic:
I realize I may be branded a heretic for my choice of topics (the Fourth Robotech War) but our group liked the idea of an opened ended campaign, rather than being stuck with a predetermined ending. We never finished but oh well, it was fun while it lasted. My stories are based on the RPG scenarios (some from the RPG books, some thought up by the GM and, to some extent, the players) but my stories will try to move away from that, if for no other reason than to remove the element of "munchkinism" that any RPG has.
Aside from being a fan of Robotech (tv shows, novels, RPG and comics), I am greatly interested in military history. My primary areas of interest are World War II, the Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, Modern (hypothetical Nato vs Warsaw Pact) and World War I. My stories take many elements from these varied periods.
Ship names - I take ship names from all periods, modern vessels to the late 1700's. I generally name the ships of the same battlegroup from the same nationality (British, German, American, Russian, etc).
Mecha team names - some of the names I've used or will use are taken from well known units in various wars, Napoleonic battalions, World War II divisions, etc.
The Combined Arms Mecha Squad - this name is borrowed from a contemporary (formerly Soviet) unit structure, the Combined Arms Army. The idea of units being made up of various arms rather than pure armor, infantry or artillery. The idea dates back to World War II. The Germans became well known for the ability to put together Kampfgruppen (battlegroups) that contained a wide variety of type and quality of troops and equipment and fought extremely well. As the group of characters in my stories were based on an RPG campaign, there was obviously going to be a variety of mecha, so I needed to fit it into the REF military structure. There are still pure VT, Destroid and Cyclone units however.
