The UM table explained

The UM table, used in INS/MV for determining success or failure of a roll.

roll 3d6, designating (in advance) one to be the hundred's place, one to be ten's place, and one to be the one's place.

X is the hundred's place
Y is the ten's place
Z is the one's place

On the UM table, compare the difficulty of the task (Moderate for talents (skills) and powers) to the rating you possess, and you'll get your target number expressed as XY. Z is your degree of success. Typical starting talent score will be 1, 2 or 3, maybe a 4; same is true for characteristics.

* : this result can only be attained through Risk. In INS/MV, Risk is expressed through column shifts. Angels and Demons can shift the column their target number appears in to the left, thus making their roll more difficult, and can add the number of columns shifted to the one's place, thus possibly pushing it above 6. Thus if I have Agility 4, instead of using the target number 66 (95% chance of success) I can choose to column shift to the left, say, three columns, reducing my chance of success to about 89%, still really good. Then, because of my column shift, I'll get a bonus of 3 to my one's place value, boosting my degree of success significantly!! (or failure, if I blow my roll)
