Magic Nulling Gem Chapter 9: Kendricks Plan

The return trip to the Fanciful Tale is a little more exciting as the group is stopped no less than four times, while looking for their fugitive. Each time they have to admit they have come up empty handed. It seems a bitter pill for them to swallow.

At the Inn, they find that Albian is again on stage telling stories. Queries for Kendrick are responded to by being told to sit tight and wait.

After the second round of drinks has gone by. Kendrick returns and sits down. Helping himself to a mug of ale. He says, "Okay what is it now?. I know you couldn't have gotten any gems that fast."

As Kendrick sits down, Strongarm and Demic stand up and move away from the table. Strongarm takes up a position near the doorway, while Demic steps to the bar and orders a drink.

Gideon looks around the room, his twin scars make it look as if he is ready to kill someone or at the very least maim them somewhat.

He turns to the man named Kendrick and asks, "Have you seen a friend of mine from my old days of war and glory, his name is Mordred. A tall elf, tends to walk around in heavy armor and wears a pair of swords on his back, like me."

Kendrick looks at the Gideon's face and then takes an interest in the mug before him. He frowns into the cup for a moment as if thinking. He then downs the drink and says, "No, I can't say that I have. Come to think of it the only elf I've ever heard of that carries two swords is in his", he gestures to Albian, "stories."

Gideon seems to relax and he asks casually, "I've heard you plan on raising an army... is that true?"

Kendrick looks around quickly and says in a low voice, "We've had enough of armies, besides if our enemies see us mobilizing they will destroy us. No, I'm talking about an old fashioned insurrection! Well spring up all over the city and capture our enemies and toss them out of the city with little more than their breeches on. We'll take their precious uniforms and destroy them in a huge bonfire; destroy the uniforms and those cursed gems of evil. It will become a day of celebration of our freedom from the grip of the brutal oppressors."

Magnus takes a draught of his ale and looks at Kendrick with a smile, "For curiosities sake let us say that I did have a golden gem and would be willing to give it to you...what would you do with such a prize? Would you flaunt it to your followers to gain more support against the invaders, would you try to devise a disguise with it to fool them, would you hope to gain magical power from the gem, or possibly the most foolish option would be to turn in to the soldiers the very people who could produce such a gem." At hearing the last sentence, Kendrick looks shocked holding his mug halfway between the table and his mouth, he says, "You accuse me of being a traitor to that murderous bunch of...."

Magnus raises his hand to calm him, "Now do not get offended... you must understand that anyone who would have gotten such a gem would be careful of who knew of such a fact..." He takes another drink, while Kendrick seems to chew on that. "Now what assurances would you have to give to anyone who had a golden gem to 'show you' that they would not be letting the wrong people find out about it...."

Kendrick is silent, staring first at Magnus, then Jassal and finally Gideon. "I admit, I hadn't considered that possibility. Come to think of it I hadn't honestly considered the possibility of traitors in our midst. The lines always seem clear cut. Those who wore uniforms, versus the rest of us. Do not fear that I will betray you should you be successful for in your quest. I do have a select group with whom I keep council. If any of them were working for the other side they would have betrayed us by now with disastrous results."

He leans forward in his chair, "I give you my word that I will not betray your trust. Only I shall know how the gem was obtained. As for how we use the gem, until you have proven yourselves it would be foolish to let our plans be known." He adds casually, "Anyone who thinks to betray us, will be sorely disappointed as I will be their only contact and at worst I shall take the fall, but there will be others to take my place... many others."

He leans back for a moment and a slow smile spreads across his face, "Suppose someone... some group had obtained a gem. Of course, I have devised a plan that if successful, will be the beginning of the end of their reign in this town. One that can only be successful with one of those golden gems in our possession. Of course the plan in dangerous, so anyone who could obtain for us a gem would be the natural candidates to execute the mission. I would go along of course, in this way we could make sure that everything goes smoothly. If the obtainers of the gem are traitors then they would be forced to turn on me during the mission, as I said before, capturing me would be useless. If I were a traitor, the obtainers of the gem could use me as a hostage should they be betrayed during the mission. This way both groups can be assured of their safety."

He turns back to Gideon and says, "We are not mercenaries and make only mediocre fighters at best. We are realists, even though most label me as an idealist. That does not bother me, what they undervalue they underestimate. No armies, just a little surprise a quick victory and then back to life as normal."

Magnus looks around the room, receiving an all clear from Strongarm and Demic, he begins to make strange arcane gestures with his hands, almost as if he were about to make something appear. With a flourish he opens his hands and dramatically reveals... nothing at all.

Kendrick who had been leaning forward until this moment sit back in his chair a disgusted look on his face, "Is this supposed to be funny?"

Magnus doesn't answer he simply take Kendrick's mug and pours him a drink. Handing it back to him he takes a drink of his own. Jassal smiles and says soothingly, "We also feel the need to be careful. I am not a magician, so I couldn't just conjure up a gem. In time you may have that which you seek."

Kendrick suddenly seems pensive and nervous. Several others nearby also seem pensive and nervous . He takes his mug and takes long drink. After a few seconds he stops and frowns. He looks in the mug shaking it a little. There is the slight sound like the sound of ice hitting the sides of a cup. With a gulp he drains the mug and looks inside. His eyes widen as he extracts the golden gem from his cup. The gem is visible for only a second as he hides it a moment later. Looking around to make sure no one else was watching he leans forward and says, "Well, I guess that explains why suddenly I didn't trust you guys. This thing has some power that turns people against each other. But why didn't it affect us until just now?"

He looks at Magnus and says, "Are you the mage they say is responsible for the Ogre's eye Inn? No, wait, don't answer that. I'm not sure I really want to know. Take this." He hands the gem back and gives a shutter as Magnus' ring negates the gem's power. "Curse the evil thing, it seems you have some power to control it." He gestures toward the bar and a young serving boy walks outside. Strongarm waits a moment then follows. "That was Trion, he will take you to a place where we can discuss my plan in detail. It would be best if we didn't leave at the same time, just in case of spies and such." With that he stands up and returns to the bar and orders a drink.

***************

Magnus wait a few minutes then they head out of the inn. Outside they find Strongarm and the boy waiting, Demic chooses to stay inside. Without a word the boy turns and starts heading down the street. Twice when approached by the soldiers, the boy turns and cowers behind Strongarm. Each time the soldiers move on without another word. One says, "We've checked everyone in this town at least twice. I'm beginning to know some of these people by name!"

The boy leads them through the city to an area that seems less populated by soldiers. Magnus realizes they are heading back into the upper west section of town! They enter a familiar street and walk past a familiar home. They enter an alleyway between two buildings and enter a side door. Inside is a room decorated with rather expensive tastes in mind. A pair of comfortable couches , two chairs and a long table fills out this room. The decorations can only be described as eccentric and expensive.

Several minutes later Kendrick enters, "Good... please sit." He moves over to the back of one couch and taps on the back. It opens revealing a hidden panel. He pulls out a large box and takes a seat in one of the chairs.

Looking at Magnus, he says, "You were very close about my plans. I do plan on using the gem with a uniform to infiltrate their headquarters here in town. But I don't plan on doing that with one uniform and gem." He opens the box and reveals a dozen uniforms and gems.

"They aren't the real things, just good copies. I paid a tailor a good amount of gold to get these uniforms done, based on just looking at the men who wear them. As you may have noticed, gold uniforms don't leave the inns much. It cost me a small fortune in platinum to have the gems cut by a glass cutter. I plan on entering the Hydra's Head Inn with several men in these uniforms, but we need at least one real gem in the bunch just in case they have some way of telling if the gems are real. Hopefully one effects produced by one real gem be assumed to be shared by all the others. As you can guess you have been drafted to help in this mission. Get a good nights sleep and prepare for battle tomorrow night. We meet here at dusk tomorrow and fill out the finer points in the plan and strike hopefully while most of them are drinking themselves into a stupor. Any questions?"

Magnus looks at Kendrick and declares, "There are most definitely questions. First and foremost being what do you plan to accomplish in the Hydra's Head Inn. Now we all believe that this is where most of the soldiers have gathered and it may be their headquarters in this town, but what can we accomplish by going in without any idea of what the layout is like. At this moment there is someone who is scouting out the interior for me for it seems that the innkeeper isn't allowed to let normal folk into his establishment."

Kendrick smiles and says, "That wasn't always so, my comrade. One of the men who will meet us here tomorrow will bring a rough sketch of the inn. It seems he frequented it before the soldiers came and isn't too fond of the fact they won't let him in now. I don't know how you managed to get a scout into that inn, but you should tell them to lay low, or better yet perhaps they can be used to increase our chances of seeming genuine."

"Next," Magnus continues, "who exactly is going into the place and what is going to be your story. The soldiers know that their gold gemmed leaders have been killed here."

Kendrick sputters, "What! When did this happen? I've had no reports of the deaths of any gold gemmed soldiers at the Ogre's Eye Inn. There weren't any soldiers stationed at the inn except to spring some trap. Their leaders weren't there." Magnus mentions a little about his encounter with the golden gemmed soldiers at the Wandering Minstrel, leaving out any mention of a certain woman.

"Well now that makes things a little more interesting. It seems they are trying to cover up the fact that they are now just leaderless rabble. As for who is going, I will simply say, some people who have scores to settle and as for our story, we are not planning on pretending to be their dead leaders."

"I presume that you will pretend to be from outside of town to replace those lost, but what if they haven't communicated that their leaders have been killed... then they will certainly be suspicious. Please tell me that you don't plan to attack the soldiers in their own headquarters without more men." He pauses, "if we need more uniforms they can be supplied, at lease five or six more from the ones taken at the Ogre's Eye, but if we don't have any set plan with a chance of succeeding I suggest that we postpone this little mission until we can get more information on the layout and strength of the soldiers there."

Kendrick nods and says, "We will be replacing a delegation of gold gemmed soldiers who were supposed to reach town tomorrow evening. The actual delegation ran into some ogre trouble, when one of our friends gave them the wrong directions. Since this group is now leaderless, we can take control of the situation. After pretending to extend the search for the killers of our predecessors, we can decide that this city is no longer worth the trouble or that trouble elsewhere requires the attention of most if not all of the soldiers stationed here. We can bleed them off in groups. At the very least we can disorganize the troops in this town and make it easier to ambush the soldiers and force them out of town. The original plan was to meet with the leaders of the soldiers in this town privately and dispatch them, then send orders down to march on the Universal Harmony Church in town. Only a fool would do so, but these people don't seem to know about Tara's power. Members from the church will be waiting for them. We will get rid of them in one fell swoop. At worst we would be discovered and betrayed. In that case we were to carry evidence that would get them to attack the Church anyway. I'll have to run it by the others, but I believe that if we assume leadership, we can more easily force the soldiers to follow our original plan. If you have six more uniforms, then I can get six more men...did you get the gems as well as the uniforms? They would be most helpful. In any case, we must do this tomorrow. If anyone who is left is expecting the delegation, they will expect them tomorrow. I must go now or someone will notice my absence. Remember dusk tomorrow. We will discuss any changes then."

With that he replaces the uniforms and gems and slips out of the room and into the night.

Magic Nulling Gem Chapter 10: Late Night Discussion

Jassal motions for silence after Kendrick leaves. After a few moments he goes to the door and opens it. A few seconds later Demic enters the room. Jassal says, "What did he do after we left him?"

Demic says, "He drank at the bar for a little while. The bartender is definitely in on it. I saw them pass subtle signals around. There were at least two others in the bar who were in on it, but I couldn't see who responded to his signals. No one followed me here and he didn't see me follow him. He came straight here, with no deviation. Did you know we are right down the street from Nushaba's? He even took a more direct route that we normally take to get here! So what was his plan?"

Jassal fills Demic in on the plan and Demic rolls his eyes saying, "A true idealist. Let's face it no one in their right minds attacks a church." He pauses for a moment, "Then again, these guys are here for the purpose of freeing us from the 'influence' of the Harmony Church, so the idea of their leaders giving them an order to directly attack the church isn't so far fetched. Provided they haven't already tried it and found out it wouldn't work. The bit about taking over might work, if the group pretends that they don't know about the massacre of their leaders here. I wonder what the Lady Nushaba found out? So does this mean that we're all in on this crazy scheme or what?

Magnus looks around at those gathered and says, "Good question Demic... are we all in on this crazy scheme? We should decide right now who is in and who is out. There is no pressure, for anyone to go along with this plan and we all can be certain that it will be dangerous. I for one am in. These soldiers have disrupted life in this town and over the entire valley if rumors are to be believed and I believe that they must be stopped. Who is with me? I will feel no ill will towards any that decide to step out now. Jassal, I do not mean to be presumptuous but I believe it would be better if Demic and Strongarm chose for themselves in this matter, not that they wouldn't otherwise."

Jassal arches an eyebrow. "A valid point, he turns to Demic and Strongarm. Neither of you signed on to take on an army, if you did you'd be fighting the orcs up north in that crazy war. "

Demic and Strongarm look at each other for a long moment, then Demic turns to Jassal and says, "I seem to remember something about combat bonus for protecting your hide. Does that still stand?"

Jassal nods, "That is why I hired guards."

Demic nods, "Then I'm in, there ain't nothing wrong with being a soldier for hire, just so long as he gets paid."

Strongarm shrugs and says, "After all we've been through, it's kinda pointless to run now. How many fights have we been in, in the last couple of days where we were out numbered... I don't know. Just add one more to that long list."

Jassal turns to Magnus and says, "Well that is settled, I've come this far and I have to admit this little adventure has given me quite a thrill, especially since my opponents aren't the typical orcs and ogres." With a mischievous grin he says pompously, "Besides, if I leave now, everything will fall apart without me and this town will be run over by those murderous brutes." He continues more soberly, "If that happened I'd have to cut this city from my trade route and take a large cut in my income."

'Gideon' looks around at everyone judging their reactions, before saying, "I do not know if this plan would work... it seems quite delicate and could fail easily. Perhaps we should postpone the attack a few days... say three and we can scout the outskirts and hunt down and disable soldiers perhaps killing them or take prisoners. Also this time would give the selected men more time to train and focus and learn their role."

Demic nods, "They do seem to be in a bit of a hurry, don't they? I think we'll prepare your arguments and tomorrow we will find out why and perhaps we can talk them out of it."

Strongarm says, "Though, now that I think about it we should be goat stubborn in delaying things. We don't know how long they have been planning this, nor how much information they have. Also remember, we are the new guys on their plan, they won't trust us too much and might try and hang us as traitors if they think we work for them." He jerks his head in the general direction of the center of town.

Magnus suggests, "We should return to Nushaba's by a roundabout route... maybe even splitting up... into groups of two."

Jassal nods and gestures toward the door.

Demic opens the door a crack and takes a long look outside, before stepping out. As he leaves he partially closes the door behind him and Strongarm looks through the crack as Demic walks down the street. "Nothing so far." He mutters. Then he and Jassal head out the door.

Lastly 'Gideon' and Magnus leave the room. Outside nothing seems out of the ordinary and as they take their roundabout route to the house down the street, Magnus can detect no one following them or any other such trouble.

***************

When they finally do get to Nushaba's place, shortly after entering, Sabik appears and says, "The Lady will see you after dinner. In the upper portico, just above the flower garden.

After a sumptuous dinner consisting of meats, they have never tasted before and drinks whose colors, Jassal had never known existed. The group assembles in the room where Nushaba, without the makeup, waits in a dress that bears a more than passing resemblance to that worn by a certain group of underground elves Magnus has met before.

She asks about the day's events and Magnus gives her a run down of everything that has happened to date. When he finishes telling her about Kendrick's plan she says, "Well their information is pretty good based on what I learned. It turns out that the golden gems aren't the top of the heap. There seems to be a whole other hierarchy that doesn't wear the gems in the center of their uniforms. The reason they have the inn off limits to strangers is that the highest ranking officer in this part of the valley is in there. And if the old fool weren't drunk most of the time, he'd be livid by the damage we've done. As it is he wakes up in the morning with a hangover, which he cures by drinking and he doesn't stop until he passes out sometime at night. Since he outranks the boys coming in, he doesn't plan on being sober when they get here. Sad as Kendrick's plan is, the disguise thing will work without too much trouble, if they can get to the inn without any problems. Once they are in the inn, everyone else will be too drunk to care.

As the old fart himself put it, 'Honey, I control this town. I'm sitting in a fortress in a town I control, where the people are afraid to even look sideways at my lowest grunt. Ain't nobody gonna mess with us, so lets have a little fun.'

Her eyes flash dangerously and she says, "I almost blew my cover by strangling him then and there. I also managed to check around. There are about 20 to 30 men in the building, nearly half will be in a drunken stupor before noon. The kitchen staff doesn't trust me, so I couldn't look around too much. As far as I can tell there are only two ways out of that building. Through the front door... and off the roof. Mind you I prefer the front door. In any case whether they wait or attack all this ends in a week. As they plan on somehow destroying the Harmony Temple in town. They figure if they can do that and kill the priests, then they can move on to another town, leaving this one cleansed. Of course there would be a small group left behind to make sure no infidels rise again." she finishes bitterly.

"If this Kendrick attacks tomorrow, I'll be ready. But tell him this...the drunkard is MINE." she seems to suddenly be aware of something.. "I'm sorry I must be tired to be this rude. Since you don't think that this is a good plan, can you suggest an alternate, considering the time frame we have? If those soldiers they are expecting show up late, you're going to need a good cover story as they are expected tomorrow dusk. At worst you can only delay a couple of days, before people get suspicious. So what do you group of intellectual giants suggest?" She says with a playful smile.

Gwydeon says, "Well I am not very experienced in high tactical situation but I DO NOT want to join the attack for at least one more day and also it would be much better if we found my friends we could use, Mordred and Hunter as experienced combatants.

He turns to the Lady and after giving a brief description of the pair he asks, "Can you ask your available servants to search? We could use them and I don't feel like going into a major battle without Modred we worked as a perfect team watching each other's back in especially close quarters."

Strongarm snorts and says, "What don't you think we're good enough to watch your back! Have some confidence in your own skills. Besides if what the lady says is true, it won't be much of a battle."

Nushaba says, "I can give the descriptions to my servants, but if all this is happening tomorrow, I don't know if we will be able to find them in time. This is a big city after all. If someone wants to stay hidden they stay hidden."

Magnus looks at Nushaba, "So what you are saying is that the sooner we attack the better... the only thing it seems that we may be able to accomplish with this little plan is the killing of the man in charge... hopefully he is not just a figure head. He will almost definitely see us for a meeting, if not at first, then soon, we can over power any guards he might have... and either kill him or take him hostage. The main problem will be getting out." The mage pauses as he suddenly gets a gleam in his eye..., "I wonder… maybe we should go tomorrow... however we should bring plenty of rope. If we go all we have to do is meet with leader, subdue him with as little noise as possible, and bring him out through the roof. It might even be possible to replace him with one of our own disguised with either magic or a good makeup job." Magnus looks around at the stalwart band, "What say you friends... does the plan have merit? Nushaba this leaders quarters are on a higher level of the inn, correct? Possibly even on the top floor? I could even prepare some scrolls that allow the recipient of the magic to be able to walk on walls and ceilings like a spider... this may work. Delay would be better to lay out our plans but if Kendrick is going to continue otherwise... with or without us, we should not lose this opportunity."

Nushaba says, "I don't know which floor his quarters were on, only one or two of the women were allowed upstairs and only with an escort of the least drunk soldiers. As far as disguises, Mistress Alnitak can make anyone look like anyone else if she has enough time to work on it. As for using a rope to get his fat arse off the roof. I say just push him off and roll his body into a pit somewhere. No one in this town will miss him!"

Demic mutters, "He must have gotten pretty friendly..." He cuts off and stares at a picture as Nushaba turns her burning eyes on him.

Jassal smiles and says, "Well all this is well and good but first we must convince our allies of our plan, whether it is to delay or not. Remember they may also have more information than we do. In any case I think the idea does bear some merit and with a little fleshing out might be a viable alternative to the madness we face otherwise. As for impersonating him, we may make someone look like him, and maybe sound like him, but it won't be enough to fool his close comrades who have been locked up in that fortress with him. Especially since we only have a second hand report of his behavior to go on. We also have to take into account the fact that even if we do get them to delay it will only be a day or two at most, which won't help us much, as we won't be able to get into the inn, until we are dressed up in those uniforms. Perhaps if we do as they plan tomorrow and get into the inn and get accepted, then delay any further plans for a day or two until we can get a better feel for what we are up against. Then maybe we can come up with a less risky and more definite plan. In any case, I am tired and must rest and I believe that I am not the only one.. We can continue this discussion tomorrow." He stands and bows toward Nushaba, "Good night, Lady."

Nushaba also stands and says, "Until tomorrow then." Everyone else looks at each other then rises and returns to their rooms.
