Chapter 14: Old Friends/New Friends
Chapter 13: The Marshall's Power
Strongarm and Demic
rush into the room with the others quickly behind them to find that the wall between
the two rooms has been smashed down. Opposite the missing wall is another large
hole in the outer wall of the inn. Several large pieces of furniture have been
smashed in half. It looks like a large creature broke through the wall and left
a path of destruction all the way through the room and broke out the other wall.
Lying on the ground just inside the large hole is Dayal, laughing and rolling
on the floor. He seems to be laughing so hard tears are coming out of his face.
One man lies on the remains
of a bed that got caught in the path of destruction... well actually only the
top half off him lies on the bed. The other half is missing. There is no sign
of the other injured man. Nushaba leads the Marshall into the room at arrow
point and says, "What the hell happend here?"
The Marshall takes a deep
breath and over his shoulder at the woman. He jerks his head at the group and
says, "Shoot!" The silver band on his uniform glows for a moment and fades.
Nushaba's eyes glow and answering silver and her bow moves away from him and
points at Gwydeon. She lets an arrow fly and quickly readies her bow and shoots
again at Jassal.
The elf is quick enough
that the first arrow only slices into his side and not his heart where it was
aimed. Jassal who wasn't looking, turns quickly when he hears a bow shot and
that is the only thing that saves his life. As he turns he steps to one side
and the arrow zips past his face just inches from his nose.
Dayal stops laughing to
see what is going on as Nushaba readies a third arrow, while retreating to the
doorway. The Marshall disappears and they hear him pounding down the stairwell.
Everyone dives for cover
as Nushaba starts shooting again. Unfortunately there is only light cover and
within the space of a few seconds Strongarm takes two arrows in the right leg,
Demic has an arrow through his left hand, Jassal has practically vanished, two
arrows have bounced off Gwydeon's armbands, Dayal's shield has a couple of arrows
sticking out of it and Magnus' broken arm now has an arrow in it as well. Suddenly
the arrows stop. They peek out to see Nushaba just standing there bewildered,
her quiver of arrows is spent.
In a fit of crazed frenzy,
Gwydeon yanks the arrow out of his side, giving birth to a loud scream of pain.
The scream changes octaves until it becomes a roar as the elf charges quickly
rips off a piece of a nearby sheet and stuffs it in his wound. Grabbing both
swords he charges at Nushaba yelling "Damn woman!!! You better tell us your
plans next time! Maybe then we can work together better!" He continues on past
the stunned archer woman who just watches him pass as she idly reaches back
with her hand searching an empty quiver for arrows.
He enters the front room
and hears many footsteps on the stairway. He gets to the head of the stairway
and sees that the enlarged chest has been moved and several men that he recognizes
have the Marshall and are dragging him back down the stairs.
Suddenly there is a gold
flash and the Marshall shouts, "Let go of me!" The men quickly do and he stands
up. "Now men there are some troublemakers up stairs. Two of them are the magi
that have been giving us so much trouble. 100 gold marks to the man that kills
either of them!"
There is suddenly a loud
cheer that is echoed throughout the bottom floor. Men suddenly begin charging
up the stairs. Their eyes glowing a strange golden glow. After seven or eight
start up the stairs the Marshall joins them.
Gwydeon begins looking
around and picking up debris and tossing it down the stairwell.
A few moments later Dayal
comes up and says, "What the hell are you doing?" He then sees the group charging
up the stairs with the strange glow in their eyes and he also begins shouting
and tossing debris down the stairs. The wooden hail slows them down but it doesn't
stop them.
The two quickly retreat
back to the other room.
Jassal is there with a
gem standing next to Nushaba, but the gem doesn't seem to affect the magic that
binds her. Strongarm is propped up against the remains of a bed his legs swathed
in bandaged. Demic standing with one hand holding a sword the other wrapped
up as well. Magnus stands trying to ignore the pain while slightly swooning.
It takes Gwydeon a second
to tell them the situation before he turns to face several men standing in the
doorway.
Gwydeon yells to Dayal,
"Remember the tactic in the tavern with your dead drunk friend.... I DO! Lets
do it man!!!"
Seeing the soldiers, Magnus
pulls Nushaba back away from the entrance. The woman seems to be disoriented
and frightened. Her eyes no longer glow silver, but she doesn't seem to know
who any of them are. Dayal says, "What are you talking about, Pendran isn't
dead yet!" But as Gwydeon stands beside him and the men attack, he gets the
general idea as the two soldiers attack followed by three more crowding through
the door way.
Two men enter through
the other hole in the wall and move to attack Magnus. Jassal moves to block
them. Demic holding his injured hand behind him.
Recognizing the men as
friends, Magnus pulls out another scroll and reads the rune, while pointing
at one of the men. While his partner charges the one Magnus pointed to stops
as the golden glow fades from his eyes. Bright light enters the room as a second
explosion is heard.
The lone man is quickly
cut down from three sides as Jassal, Demic and Torus attack him.
Magnus tries to push the
remains of the bed over to the wall. Jassal, Torus and Demic help him and soon
the massive bed is blocking a good portion of the hole, allowing no entrance
through that hole.
Dayal and Gwydeon managed
to cut down one man then a second before they come across Grayson. Oddly enough
the man seems to be more than enough for both fighters as he seems to have pre-knowledge
of how one will strike. He himself forces both back a few steps, until a slash
by Gwydeon cuts the front of Greyson's shirt revealing another shirt of a completely
different design and one familiar to both fighters. The shirt is that of a five
headed hydra and with each attack one of the heads glows and Greyson avoids
the attack, while launching his own. Torus moves to help the embattled duo and
Gwydeon steps back and begins to speak a rune. Two other unknown soldiers join
Grayson and they begin to force the pair back.
Magnus pulls out yet another
scroll and takes some rope and begins looking for something to tie it to. Gwydeon
speaks his rune and a rain of silver lights floats down over the soldiers. Greyson's
shirt lights up and he tumbles backwards out of the room. But the other two
soldiers aren't as lucky as they collapse onto the ground.
Magnus ties the rope to
the post of the other half of the large bed and tosses it out of the hole. Given
the few seconds respite, Dayal helps Jassal carry Strongarm to the rope. "I
can take it from here. I can still let myself down." With that the big man swings
out and lowers himself arm over arm. Demic grabs Nushaba and says, "I'm sorry
my lady, but we must go now." Dayal grabs the rope and Demic wraps Nushaba's
arms around Dayal. "Make sure she gets down safely."
Gwydeon quickly finishes
off the two sleeping soldiers.
Dayal makes sure she has
a tight hold on him and says, "Just make sure you make it with that hand of
yours. As he moves over the side.
"And where do you think
you are going a voice says from the doorway as Greyson and the Marshall stand
in the doorway. With a crash the other bed starts to come move as he hears several
men behind it.
Through the hole in the
wall daylight begins streaming in.
Torus quickly reaches
for the rope yelling, "Quickly before he possess us again!"
At that moment a large
explosion rocks the building. Nearly everyone is knocked off their feet, except
Magnus who almost seems to be waiting for it.
Torus quickly moves down
the rope, followed by Jassal. The bed crashes down revealing four more men on
the floor. Magnus realizes that they are the real soldiers and none of them
are wearing rings.
"You magic cannot affect
us and you are outnumbered. Submit." The Marshall says as he picks himself up
off the floor.
Magnus and Gwydeon quickly
take the rope and climb out.
As they climb down they
feel the rope vibrate several times before it goes slack. They fall to the ground,
but luckily it was only a few feet and except for a few bruises they are relatively
unharmed.
The streets are alive
with the sounds of battle everywhere; they hear screams of death and people
shout about how the goddess of Harmony have come to punish the town.
Upon leaving the alley
they find the chaos is not nearly as bad as it sounds, but the devastation is.
Bodies litter the streets, both in uniforms and out. Though there are more bodies
out of uniforms that there are in. In the direction of the Harmony temple are
dust clouds and the smell of burning. Then something a happens, its as if someone
opened up a doorway and let the sun in. A familiar feeling that has been missing
since the Outsiders came into this town suddenly returns. The feeling of hope
and peace. The golden gems on their uniforms turn cloudy and shake before shattering
into useless gold dust. Down the street they see a fight stop, as people look
at each other soldier and townsman alike, and all but drop their weapons.
The Marshall pounds out
onto the street and upon seeing them shouts to his soldiers, "Kill them!" The
soldiers move toward the people, but they feel unafraid, knowing that they themselves
cannot kill, but knowing at the same time, even if the soldiers could harm them,
they could not kill them. The knowledge that they cannot die by the soldiers
hands gives them an added boost of confidence.
A soldier turns to the
Marshall and say, "I'm sorry sir, but we can't the valley's magic is too strong
for us here."
The Marshall raves, "It's
not too strong for me!" Both the gold and silver bands light up on his uniform,
showing the strange design on his uniform to be the form of a mythical dragon.
"Kill THEM!!!!!!" Suddenly both soldiers and townsmen alike turn toward the
small group with eyes glowing gold with silver sparkles and they draw their
weapons and walk toward them.
Torus looks at them and
says, "I think we have a problem gentlemen."
Magnus says, "Run quickly
to the Harmony temple!" He begins heading in that direction and the others quickly
follow. The mob continues to walk after them the group before the Marshal yells,
"Catch them and KILL THEM!" With the added incentive, the mob suddenly begins
moving at a faster pace and soon many are running. But by the time they get
moving, the others are well ahead of them twisting and turning and occasionally
the mob loses sight of them.
Gwydeon quickly tires
of running and hatches a plan, "You guys keep running, I'm going to try and
ambush the Marshall!" Magnus, Demic, Strongarm, Jassal, and Nushaba continue
on running while Torus, Dayal, and Gwydeon wait until they are out of sight
of the mob and dive into nearby alleyways. Each taking up a hidden position,
they watch as the mob makes its way past their position. The Marshall with Greyson
in tow, follows after them shouting, "Kill them all! Make sure no one survives."
Gwydeon readies a pair
of throwing knives and as the Marshall passes his position, he leaps from the
shadow tossing both knives straight at the Marshall. Greyson's shirt flares
up he grabs the Marshall pulling him back. Gwydeons first knife cuts into the
Marshals arm, while the second misses completely. Torus and Dayal attack at
that moment, but they don't get a chance to swing as the Marshall's shirt flares
up again revealing the dragon picture, "OBEY ME!"
They stop and look at
the Marshall shocked at their own behavior and embarrased they could ever make
the mistake of attack their leader like this. They know their lives are forfiet,
but right now he needs them for something else. "Come with me", the Marshall
commands, "You will protect me from that mage and we will destroy the Harmony
temple tonight!" He takes the dagger Gwydeon hit him with and keeps it. A quick
examination of the wound shows that he is unhurt. They surround the Marshall
in a protective circle and hurry after the mob.
Magnus, weakend by the
fall and the pained by the jostling of his broken arm, he starts to slow down,
but he isn't the only one. Strongarm isn't in the best of conditions either.
To make it worse, Nushaba confused and scared begins to try and pull away from
them more and more as they go on. Not knowing who these people are or why they
want her, all she does know is that other people want them dead and that hanging
around them could get her killed. Slowly but surely the mob begins to gain ground,
it is a certainty that they will catch up with them before they reach the Harmony
temple.
They round yet another
corner and Magnus runs straight into a tall dishevealed old man. In his weakend
condition Magnus bounces off of him and lands on his back. Jassal and Demic
slowly help him back up. As Magnus regains his feat he takes a look at the stranger.
The man looks like he
just came out of a burning building *after* it collapsed on him. His clothing
in tatters, just enough of it remains unburned to tell that it was originally
blue. In his right hand is a large staff with a stylized anhk on top of it.
Little glowing light drifts down from the anhk and circle around the shaft as
they sink to the ground. But before they hit the ground they begin an upward
spiral that complements the downward spiral of another ball of light.
Nushaba gets near the
staff and a ball of light leaps out from the staff streaks toward her like a
bolt of lighting. She feels as if someone has lifted the veil that was clouding
her thoughts. She gasps and looks around realizing that everything has changed.
"What's going on here?" Her eyes suddenly focus on the staff and she stares
at the old man. She looks as if she wants to say something but she instead keeps
her mouth shut.
"Well, well, well, young
one. It looks like you've gotten yourself into a bit of trouble. What's with
this uniform? I know I'm a little late, but did you tire of my service and decide
to join the army?"
Magnus pauses, looks
at the man, as the realization hits him of who it is he breaks into a smile and
gives a laugh of relief, "Torana, by the gods, you're alive!" The mage grins as
he adds, " I was afraid you were never going to show up for lunch at the Ogre's
Eye..." This illicits a hearty laugh from Torana.
"As for this uniform,
well its previous owner has no more use for it. Anyway let me tell you that
it has been an interesting few days for me and these brave heroes and I'm sure
that you will have much to share of your travels as well. But I digress...your
arrival is most timely...the Marshal is back the way we came with many charmed
townsfolk."
"Excellent, I think it's
time we put an end to this silliness once and for all!"
Magnus continues, "I take
it that the staff you hold can free them of the spell as it did for our companion?
Come let's hurry back before the son of an orc gets away."
Torana looks around and
his eyes fasten on Nushaba. He frowns for a moment then he smiles and says,
"My boy you're allies are getting more colorful everyday."
He begins speaking in
a language Magnus doesn't know, but is strangely familiar and the translation
comes across as:
"Welcome to this night
of revelation, daughter of the shining one. I see that the golden children are
as valorous as I believed and not a brutal and ignorant as you would have others
to believe."
Nushaba's eyes widen for
a moment before replying in the same tongue "Honored one, I did not know you
spoke our language. I see The Honorable One has graced you with a symbol of
power to use in this fight. You must truly be one of note dear brother."
With that they both turn
to go. Magnus pulls out his borrowed sword and offers it to Nushaba and smiles,
"Now I do hope you save the bite of this blade for our enemies, milady as I
only have one good arm left and the others are in no better shape."
Nushaba blushes and says,
"Thank you, sir! You have been very kind considering that I have nearly killed
you twice today."
Jassal says, "We will
continue on to the temple. Join us there if things go wrong." Between the Jassal
and Demic, the pair managed to get themselves and Strongarm down the street.
Torana, Magnus and Nushaba
turn and move down the street, turning the corner only to come face to face
with a huge mob of people with glowing eyes. The people charge upon seeing them.
Magnus and Nushaba prepare to defend themselves, but Torana just saunters forward
as if the oncoming human wave didn't exist. As they near him the staff reacts
sending dozens of bolts of blue light to strike the people charging him. When
each person is struck they stop and stumble, only to get up a few moments later
confused. Soon the mob is dispersed except for a small knot of people surrounding
the Marshall.
As they near the group
Magnus realizes he recognizes everyone surrounding the Marshall. Grayson, Torus,
Dayal, and Gwydeon stand in a protective line before him. The Marshall shouts,
"I want that staff! Get it for me now!"
The four charge with the
Marshall walking behind them. The four don't get very far before four bolts
of light shoot out striking three of them. Grayson's shirt lights up and he
somehow manages to dodge the light. Several more bolts of light shoot out from
the staff chasing him around and he manages to avoid them all, his glowing shirt
seeming to give him warning. But time catches up with him and as he tires he
trips on a loose stone and is caught by a bolt of light.
Torana turns to the Marshall
and says, "Do you want this staff! Then you can have it! I have no further use
for it." With that Torana tosses the staff at the Marshall. The Marshall laughs
and in a feat of incredible dexterity twists and grabs the staff as it passes
by him. "Ha Ha!" He laughs, "Now you cannot stop me!"
"DOWN!" Torana yells and
the trio hit the ground as the little globes of light stop moving down the staff
and surround the Marshall, within moments he is glowing as bright as the sun
and a tremendous explosion occurs, heat flows over the crowd. When his eyes
clear Magnus sees the body of the Marshall badly burned lying on the ground,
his uniform in tatters. Amazingly he is still alive. He raises himself up to
one arm and says, "I have failed. The Harmonists have won this round, but others
will follow me! We will free you from your prison!" With that he takes a half-melted
dagger and after several attempts manages to plunge the still red-hot blade
into chest. In a cry of extreme anguish and pain, the Marshall dies.
A cry goes up all over
the city and a man runs through the streets nearby shouting, "We have won, the
are Outsiders are gone! We have won, the Outsiders are gone!" Gwydeon brushes
himself off and looks around. Magnus raises himself off the ground and brushes
his robe off with his one good arm, "That was interesting... well it's good
to know that there will be no more of them."
Torana says, "You know
what? I'm hungry. What's say we get try getting a little dinner. I know this
lovely place up town." He turns and walks away not the least bit concerned that
he has lost his wonderful staff and the city looks like a war zone. After a
few steps he starts whistling a tune and walking with a spring in his step as
if this were a bright summers day. Pendran and Dayal follow him, Pendran saying,
"He's not the only one who's hungry. All that fighting works up an appetite."
He grins, patting his stomach.
Nushaba, staring at the
dead body of the Marshall, whispers, "I wanted to kill him." She sighs deeply
and tears form on her face, she cries for only a brief moment before realizing
others are around. Wiping away her tears she looks around and shakes her head.
Looks at the retreating mage and shrugs her shoulders. Putting away her sword
she says, "That's the best offer I've had all night." Magnus follows after Nushaba
leaving Gwydeon alone for a moment. The elf looks intently around him for several
moments before going to join with the others.
After several minutes
of walking they find themselves in front of a dirty rundown shack that looks
like it would collapse if anyone sneezes on it. Hanging from a wall, is a dirty
sign that says, "Chandler".
Confused they follow Torana
into the rickety structure to find a cramped room filled with candle making
equipment. Pendran, following the retreating form of Torana, moves towards the
rear moving between two large vats of wax and the others follow him. As they
enter a back room, they are surprised by the sudden change of scenery. No longer
are they in a rickety shack, but they stand in a very large circular room. Books
of all sizes and colors fill massive bookshelves that are nearly three stories
tall. To one side is a large picture window that looks out above a forest. Dominating
one wall is a large fireplace in front of which, placed in a U-shape are several
large comfortable couches.
Two other figures are
standing off to one side. Elves by race, but in the light they look darker than
any elves Nushaba has ever seen. Both greet them with a slight inclination of
the head.
Torana smiles and flops
down casually on one of the couches. "Do you think you dear boys could find
something in that kitchen of your to feed a few weary souls."
The elves smiles and one
says, "Well I think we might have just enough for you and a few other visitors
we are expecting."
The other one continues
in a playful tone, "You'll just have to take what we can muster up."
In mock irritation Torana
says, "Of all the nerve! Here a group of weary adventurers come to grace your
doors and we're treated like common scullery boys."
One of the elves says,
"If we treated you like scullery boys then we'd make you clean the floors, before
you get any food."
The other adds grinning,
"We can do that if you insist."
"Oh no, no that isn't
really necessary I'm sure you'll come up with something very suitable to our
pallets." After a few minutes Torana gets up and moves over to one of the bookshelves,
he nearly disappears into the shadow. "Oh Pendran, that reminds me could you
go and get our other visitors. They should be standing outside right about now
looking rather lost."
Pendran shrugs his shoulders
and walks out of the room. A few minutes later the oddest group of people walk
in. All dressed in white, first enters a very pretty human woman with long blonde
hair and green eyes. Following her is an attractive elfish woman with golden
eyes and raven black hair. Behind her is an male elf with silver eyes and long
amber colored hair. Behind him is a slightly disfigured elf walking next to
yet another elf this one wearing a half melted silver necklace. Bringing up
the rear is Pendran chatting with a huge ogre with whom Magnus and Gwydeon once
traveled. Pendran is saying, "...better with it so that one day when a certain
orc we know comes to claim it, he won't find me such an easy target."
"So good of you to join
us Ladies and Gentleman", says Torana. Moving out of the shadows of one of the
bookcases, Torana smiles and gestures over to the couches, "come rest for a
moment." This valley owes you a debt of gratitude that I can only in part repay.
I heard that you had lost all of your weapons and armor in that last fight.
I can help you only slightly in that respect. First of all the monetary reward
which I mentioned. He nods to the two elves, one of which opens a large sack
and proceeds to pull out much smaller bags.
"Which reminds me Gwydeon
this belongs to you," he moves over to one of the book cases and opens a small
drawer. Pulling out another sack he says, "I was told to give you this as most
of the other members have been paid."
Pendran coughs and says,
"You're just now getting paid? Where have you been hiding in the middle of nowhere?"
Addressing the second
group he says, "In addition to your reward, the Warlord has allowed that you
should choose one item from his rather vast armory to make up for the losses
while doing work in his service. I should think that unless you plan on buying
a small village you should be well set for quite some time. Now come let us
relax and have some food. The second elf exits a door and comes back a few moments
later leading a train of floating trays filled to the brim with fruits, vegetables,
steamed meat, bread and cheese.
Gwydeon asks about the
staff that Torana had. To which he replies, "Oh that, that was just a loaner
which Assyir allowed me to use to stop the forces that threaten our fragile
peace. After its task was done, he took it back."
Magnus asks about the
invaders and what lies outside the valley, Torana smiles and says, "A whole
new world lies out there, but it is not the least bit friendly to anyone. You
got a small taste of what it's like out there when they were in here. As you
probably have guessed those soldiers were not from anywhere inside the valley.
As far as I know they follow some mythical creature who's only aim is to forment
chaos and keep the races from unifying and creating peaceful nations. This valley
is the opposite of everything they stand for. It's a wonder they didn't try
this before, but mark my words. They will be back. The outside world doesn't
breed their men too smart, too greedy, yes, too smart, no. Their main war is
with the Universal Harmony Church who promotes peace and order. Don't ask me
how I know this because that is a long story and I kinda of want to eat sometime
this century." He grins.
Between bites Magnus turns
to Nushaba and asks about her being an ogre and what kind of magic she used.
At this Aladfar turns and looks all around confusedly, before his eye fix on
the only young lady in the room not wearing white. "Nushaba...'the arrow' are
you any good at archery?"
She replies with a blank
face, "Aladfar...'the hand that touches the harp'… probably better than you
play the harp." After a moment she smiles.
Aladfar says, "Don't be
so sure, if I could find one my size...."
Nushaba turns to Magnus
and says, "I suppose at first it should have been obvious I was an ogre, but
you never mentioned it before, so I figured perhaps you didn't think about that
possibility. We used fairly simple shrinking magic to do so. The magic is permanent
until a reverse spell is used."
Torana interrupts, "Simple
for ogres, I've been learning that this means it's damned hard for the rest
of us. It seems the ogres aren't nearly as dumb as they've lead everyone to
believe."
Conversation eventually
turns to the upcoming war. Torana says, "We can't depend on outside help that's
for sure. Any help we bring would just as likely try and take over. There is
a saying outside the valley, 'Evil hides behind a friendly face.' I think we
must find a way to avert the war, because if it comes down to battle, even your
combined forces will lose in the end. The small bits of orc learning I have
been able to gleam from them also shows that their adaptaions of magic are beyond
even your greatest mages, which is considerable."
Magnus, Gwydeon, Pendran,
Dayal and Aladfar talk about old times and someone asks about the old comrades.
Pendran says, "The only one we could find was Burk and he is still at his fathers
inn in Meadows End."
Gwydeon mentions that
he last saw Tasha, the speaker, Mordred, Hunter, and Zraxin just after entering
town. Dayal says, "I'm fairly sure that guy named Greyson was part of that group
that helped us at that temple. Remember the one with the glowing shirt and all".
And nearly everyone knows about Albian and his storytelling. Aladfar introduces
his old friends to his new comrades. The human woman is introduced as Mirelle
a Universal Harmony priestess. The elf woman is known as Asura Heavenstar. The
disfigured one calls himself Silverleaf, a Gaean priest. The elf with the melted
silver necklace goes by Danyx, and the amber haired elf goes by the name of
Pol Crane.
When Gwydeon asks, Pendran
about what happened with the walls back at the Hydra's head inn, Dayal nearly
falls out of his chair laughing and Pendran's face grows momentarily grim. A
moment later he smiles and says, "It seems this hammer is still too powerful
for me to control completely. We counted on that when we went into the other
room. I swung the hammer around my head and hit the wall. As expected the hammer
crashed through the wall dragging me with it. What I didn't expect was that
the hammer wouldn't be stopped by all the things in its way. I went through
the wall knocking the large bed sideways. I still remember the look of surprise
on someone's face as the hammer ripped through half of the bed. I felt several
more crashes before I found myself flying again in open air. I saw something
slide off the end of the hammer... it turned out to be the lower half of a body."
He shudders, "After a while I came to a crash landing in an alleyway slamming
into a bunch of barrels. I passed out, but not for long as I was rudely awakened
by a splash of water applied by a man in shredded and burnt clothing." He turns
and looks pointedly at Torana who seems to find something very interesting in
his wine glass, just barely hiding his smirk.
When Gwydeon asks about
an irritation spell, Magnus shakes his head, but Torana frowns and says, "You
know I might have just the thing. Let me look around and I'll get back to you
on that one."
As the group talks and
enjoys the food and drink, Torana stands up and walks over to the window and
stares out. A melancholic smile plays over his lips. As the rays of the sun
slant across the room a small bird alights on the windowsill and chirps brightly.
His smile brightens and he rejoins the party saying, "Anyone want to see my
famous glass ladder trick." At this Magnus gives a shudder.
Fin.

Chapter 14: Old Friends/New Friends
