Terminology

Here are a few terms, and a short description of their meaning, that I have found are used during role-playing. This is not a complete list, so if you can think of terms that should be included please drop me a line. |
Term |
Definition |
Battle Map |
An ASCII or bitmap drawing that displays a battlefield and indicates the positions of all its participants. Generally used to give players a tactical evaluation of their situation. |
Battle Plan |
A paragraph or series of paragraphs created by the player which describes how the character will react should such surprise battle occur between replies from players or should the player miss a reply deadline. |
Bunnying
|
Attempting to control the thoughts, actions or emotions of another PC or NPC. |
Campaign |
A series of (mis-)adventures that the characters experience; Consists of multiple related or unrelated scenarios or incidents that fit within an overall theme. They may be of fixed interval and thus have a fixed objective in which each successive adventure builds to a final climax or they may be open ended. In some areas referred to as a Saga. |
Character Design
|
The system used by the player to create an alter ego that will interact within the Campaign or adventure. Design includes statistics that measure mental and physical abilities as well as detail information about the characters look, equipment, attitude, profession, skill set and a little bit about their past. |
Class
|
This is the chosen career
or profession of the adventuring character. The character may have other
skills that could lead it to another profession, but choose not to.

DM (GM) |
Dungeon or Game Master - This is the person who is responsible for taking the results of the previous post and the players replies and creating a new post based on them, while taking into account. |
Experience |
This is a measure of how much knowledge/skill a character has gained in their chosen profession through its interaction with PC's, NPC's, and monsters. A character who interactions often with all three will gain more experience than one who concentrates on their interaction with just monsters. |
Group/Party |
A collection of PC’s and NPC’s during a campaign. |
Hack & Slash
|
A term that describes an adventure or a significant portion of an adventure that is completely dominated by continuous combat. |
IC |
In Character (IC) - The next paragraph(s) are written from the perspective of the character and detail their actions, thoughts, or words. |
Level
|
A measure of a characters experience as they pursue adventure within their chosen class. The more adventuring the character, the more experience they gain and the higher their level within their chosen class. With higher levels comes increases in ability, skills, and reputation as well as more difficult tasks. |
Monster |
Any creature that is not one of the standard PC races. Monsters are usually (but not always) hostile to the characters. |
Monty Haul
|
A type of adventure or campaign where the characters garner so many valuables (magic items, armor, gold, accessories) that money, fame, and/or excitement cease to be a reason to adventure. |
Munchkin
|
An character who is simply way too powerful to do anything but the most high level adventures and can kill most creatures with minimal effort. |
Newbie
|
Any player who is new to the role playing and/or Play By E-Mail experience. |
NPC |
Non-Player Character (NPC) - This consists of people, whom are under control of the DM and usually have personalities and histories of their own. They interact with the PC's and may provide help depending upon their specialty and personality. |
OOC |
Out Of Character (OOC) - The next paragraph(s) are written from the perspective of the player and contain player comments and/or questions. |
PC |
Player Character (PC) - This is the character that will be interacting in the game world. The PC will be a product of it's environment and maybe very different or very similar to it's creator, the player. |
PBEM
|
Play By E-mail - Several players and a DM/GM playing in an adventure/campaign where all communication is done by way of E-mail. |
PBP
|
Play By Post - Several players and a DM/GM playing in an adventure/campaign where all communication is done by via message board. |
Player
|
A participant in an adventure or campaign other than the DM/GM that controls at least one character. |
Post |
A paragraph or series of paragraphs sent by the DM to the players and lurkers that details the actions of all the PC's, NPC's, monsters and their (PC's, NPC's, and monsters) immediate reactions to their surroundings and those actions. |
Reply |
A paragraph or series of paragraphs sent by the players to the DM which contains either OOC questions/comments/requests for information or the players actions, thoughts, speeches, etc. Most games set deadlines for when a reply has to be in before the next post can go out. |
RL |
Real Life (RL) is what you live everyday when you're not dreaming, or pretending to be someone else. |
Role-Player
|
A player that focuses on the development of their character through significant detailed interaction with other PC's and NPC's. |
Round |
A paragraph or series of paragraphs detailed in a post that describes the actions of all the combatants during a battle over a time period in which it takes every combatant on the battlefield to perform at least one basic action, if possible. |
Scenario |
A single adventure that the PC go through, usually to reach some goal. |
