BACKGROUND:
Cataquacks are beach-dwelling monsters that inhabit Isle Delfino. They are
especially numerous around Gelato Beach. These bird creatures are round with
duck bills, large green eyes and small feet. They are relatives of the rare
Plungelo species also found on Isle Delfino. They are usually blue coloured
but many red coloured ones appeared during Mario's vacation on Isle Delfino.
The large green eyes cataquacks have evolved are designed to reflect as much light
as possible during the day while allowing as much light in during the night.
These creatures are mainly nocturnal, so this allows them to hunt at night but
protect their eyes if when they awake during daylight hours.
Cataquacks are typically wild, but it is believed that the red ones introduced
to the island while Mario was visiting their may have been tamed and trained to
attack by the Koopa Troop. They are much more aggressive than their blue
counterparts. Some refer to the blue ones as "Paihana" and the red ones as
"Chuhana".

BATTLE PLAN:
Attack Pattern:
Cataquacks wander around within their territories and run after anyone who enters
their territory. They will stop chasing invaders after a while, but if one catches
an invader it its territory, it will toss that invader high into the sky. This
is usually harmless, but the red ones will cause some damage with this attack.
Blue ones often lie down for naps during the day time, but they wake up very
easily if disturbed.
Basic Fighting Strategies:
Run away! You can knock a Cataquack on it's head with water and if you are on
the beach it will get stuck in the sand for a while. If you are on a grassy area
it will get right back up. They recover after being stuck in the sand for a
while.
You can stomp Cataquacks that are stuck in the ground for a coin, but it won't
kill them. If you have a Yoshi, he can easily eat them and he earns a coin in
the process.
Advanced Strategies:
You can use a Ground Pound (butt-stomp) to drive Cataquacks into the ground after
knocking them over with water in the grassy areas. This will keep them stuck
in the ground for the same amount of time as when they are stuck in the sand,
and it's quite handy when you are trying to roll watermelons around.
Another good trick is to spray a Dune Bud when Cataquacks are nearby: the giant
sandcastle it creates will knock all the Cataquacks for a loop and kill them!
If you want to get the lines of coins above the beach, get a Cataquack to chase
you, and stand under the coin shadows until he catches up and tosses you in
the air.
