Spring, 1207: Three young magi, Daramus ab Montem ex Bonisago, Adrianus ex Tytalo,
and Marcus ex Jerbitonis take the Oath at Fudarus, Domus Magna of House Tytalus. Following the massive dinner (and an unfortunate attempt by Marcus to raid the local labratories), and after a conversation with the Curatus of Fudarus, they decide to create a Covenant in Brittany (also known as Brittania Minora, or Armorica), an area unsettled by the Order since the Schism War. They pick a magically active site, a hill shunned by the locals and known in ancient times as Bibracta Parva, and gain permission from the Duke of Brittany to settle it, in return for some taxes. This brings them into immediate conflict with the local noble, Baron D'Our. After disarming a group of his knights, his hot-headed son returns with 30 knights, intent on destroying the fledgling Covenant. The appearance of another young Magus, Christoph Hawek ex Bjornearis, changes what seemed to be a disaster into a stunning victory.
Ghosts of Roman soldiers are seen; for a while the Magi believe they have in their possession the Holy Lance; Marcus challenges Daramus to a certamen over it, and loses. First appearance of Brittanicus, fillios Claudius, Divi Imperii.
Summer, 1207: Men-at-arms, led by a returned crusader, are hired. Workers are hired for the nearby silver mine. Cautious relations established with the local Cistercian monastery, St. Benedict of the Rule.
Marcus takes a young monk, Lucas, as a tutor in French.
Another Magus, Adam Weishaupt ex Criamonis, joins the Covenant. Nonchalantly.
Midsummer Night: A celebration on top of the hill, with a bonfire and plenty of ghosts. Investigations earn Daramus his first Twilight (he begins to glow from that night on). Adrianus is kicked by a unicorn, when he attempts to join the revelers.
Autumn, 1207: Adrianus, looking for faeries, unwittingly enters Arcadia. Once there, he begins a quest, looking for Tytalus.
All Hallow's Eve, 1207: Due to the high magical aura of the hill, nightmares come true. None come of it unscathed; Daramus now is fearful of water, the Templar is dead, impaled by Saracen arrows; Marcus and Adam are also severely affected. From now on, no one sleeps during Halloween.
Winter, 1207: Adam ascends the hill, and speaks with the Druids there; once the inhabitants understand the magi are not Roman conquerors, hostilities cease. During the Christmas festivities, a tentative alliance is made with Baron D'Arvenee, an enemy of Baron D'Our. Lucas is found to be stigmatic.
Several horses begin speaking. As of now, due to the high magical aura, any horse left in the covenant for more than two seasons, will start speaking. Noted among the horses are Kalistratus (their first leader, for whose impertinence Adam cast Blessing of the Childlike Bliss on him), Hermann (their second, more able, war leader; killed in the disaster of Castle D'Arvenee, 1210) and Gumby, probably the dumbest of the lot.
Spring, 1208: At the request of Baron D'Arvenee, the magi investigate witch hysteria in DeJalem. A demon is exposed, and slain by Daramus (with a little help from sodales...) in front of the townspeople. They erect a statue in his honor, and yearly send wine and cakes to Alvarium. For a while, Brother Charles (a pardoner) lives with the magi, trying to sell them indulgences. Jerard, a knight of D'Arvenee, becomes Daramus' bodyguard and captain of the turb. Jerome, nephew of the Baron, joins the Covenant for a year.
Summer, 1208: Daramus and Adam rescue a captive Maga, Penelopee ex Bonisago, from the decks of a Templar ship. The ship sinks with all hands aboard. Due to legal technicalities - Penelopee has passed her Gauntlet in Byzantium, just before the city fell to the marauding crusaders, and didn't have time to take the Oath - she is declared the fillia of Daramus. The two fall in love.
During a visit to Brest, Christoph fathers a child on one of the local prostitutes; a quarrel with Brother Charles ensues, and the monk leaves the Covenant in a huff.
Midsummer Night, 1208: Ancient rites are renewed on the hill. The magi join the celebrations for the first time.
Autumn, 1208: A Tribunal is convened, as the Order is disturbed by the upcoming Albigensian Crusade. The Tribunal acknowledges the status of Alvarium as a new Covenant; forbids the use of extravagant magics, except in situations of extreme danger; calls all Magi capable of it to take an apprentice, so that the Order may grow and flourish; and forbids any overt interference with the Crusade. Adam begins to tour the Tribunal, looking for apprentices.
Winter, 1208: Baron D'Our attempts to discredit the Magi during their yearly visit to the Duke, but only manages to shame himself.
Many arch-magi come to the Covenant, including several primi. The covenant is nearly bankrupt from the costs of housing them, but the magi do bear gifts. Including a cask of strange Transilvanian wine, left by the Primus of Tremere.
Spring, 1209: A Redcap is kidnapped, not far away from the Covenant. The magi chase the bandits into a regio (which leads into a deeper level, where a Diedne covenant exists), and rout them. However, skeletal warriors appear and inflict casualties; Daramus is near death. A strange magus, Valerius ex Tytalo, appears; he takes a letter from the unconscious Redcap's pouch.
Summer, 1209: Marcus is ordered by the Quaesitoris to go down to the South, where a Wizard March has been declared against his parens. Joined by Rulia ex Flambeaux, a Hoplite, he goes to challenge his former master. However, his loyalties are divided - he was a bitter enemy of the Church - and at the wrong moment he switches sides, and attacks Rulia. Rulia destroys his pater, and drags him before a tribunal of Quaesitoris, who declare him guilty. An emergency tribunal condemns him to death, for attacking a fellow magus and breaking the Code; Marcus is destroyed by Rulia.
Christoph's "wife" joins him with their child. Their relationship is a bitter one.
Midsummer Night, 1209: Trianoma, fillia Darami et Penelopa ex Bonisago, natus est. She is born under the signs of three magical powers; in addition to her parentes magical ability, she is also blessed with Divine and Faerie omens.
Autumn, 1209: Fredricus ex Tremere of England comes to the Covenant, and begins by challenging Christoph to a Certamen, fails disastrously, and is known henceforth as Fishboy, due to the nature of his nightmares. Christoph enjoys tormenting him by putting fish in his bed. This causes another Certamen, which Christoph loses, and which forces him to desist from such practices.
TThe magi - Christoph is instrumental here - cure the Duke of Brittany of his illness, and thus grant him several more years of life. In return, they are exempt from taxes, and earn a large amount of money.
Valerius returns, and explains his reasons for taking the Redcap's letter. He is on the trail of vampiric Tremere. In fact, he believes the casks left by the Tremere Primus are intended to help another Tremere, Malerius, become a vampire. A silent alliance is struck between him, Daramus and Adam; the rest of the Covenant is unaware of it, and Malerius (defeated by Daramus in a spectacular, vis-destroying Certamen) is capable of bribing a few grogs.
WWinter, 1209 - Spring, 1210 - The Great Tremere Plot:
Rumors of an invading English fleet cause concern at the Duke's court.
Investigation shows that six tremere magi (all based in England) are involved, and that the plot is a century old. The Tremere intend to drive the mundanes away from Brittany, thus awaking its latent magical power, fouled by the Dominion. They have "contributed" to the building of the Brest Cathedral over the years, and intend - after sending disturbing messages about the upcoming Day of Judgement - to use a massive Perdo spell on the Cathedral (aided by the enchanted roof-beams and cornerstones they've contributed), while an awe-inspiring image of an Angel appears above it, striking it with its sword and claiming it is God's punishment. In addition to spell-inspired plagues, this should send the inhabitants packing. In the meantime, the entire nobility of Brittany (assembled in Brest in anticipation of the English invasion) will be assassinated. The only problem was the only Hermetic covenant in Brittany, namely Alvarium, whose magi will surely investigate. They do, when rumors of mass madness in Brest reach them, they discover the plot - the plotters trusted Fredric, whose pater (name stricken from the record by the Quaesitoris) was one of them. They were wrong to do so, but they nearly managed to destroy the Covenant: at one point, Daramus became convinced that Bonisagus appeared in his dream, sending him to Magdeburg in Germany. As he was the only magus around (all the rest were running all over the place, trying to make sense of things that did not make sense), he ordered everyone to pack. However, once it is clear that the dream was actually a powerful Mentem spell, he decided to start fighting back. In a climatic battle at the roof of the Cathedral, Daramus blocks the powerful Perdo spell, while Fredric, hanging for dear life, dispels the illusion. Then Divine Retribution comes in; the plotters are all carried to Hell, alive. The English fleet burns and goes down with all hands. The ensuing investigation ends with the execution of several other Magi and apprentices, charged with breaking the Code. The English branch of the Tremere is all but wiped out. This is the beginning of the feud between Alvarium and House Tremere.
Spring, 1210 - Several visits to England, collecting the magical goods of the dead plotters. Christoph sends his wife and son (who is Gifted) there for good. Fredric rescues his mother from the clutches of King John.
Summer, 1210 - The Black Knight. A knight, carrying a potent magical sword and clad completely in a black armor, is terrorizing the countryside, killing children. The magi note, after a while, that he mainly kills Gifted children. Fredric is sent on a quest, to find all he can find about the knight and the sword. The sword seems to have belonged to Sir Lamorak, one of King Arthur's finest knights. The sword was forged by Druids and priests; it has both magical and Divine power. Its purpose is to slay wizards. Disregarding all this, Fredric touches the blade - and loses his Gift. The knight, driven insane by the incessant call of the sword, is finally slain by Alvarium's champion, Sir Jerard, in single combat. The blade is buried deep within the hill, powerful Terram spells keeping it out of reach.
Daramus finally managed to investigate the Transylvanian wine, discovering it includes Vampiric blood. The report he writes helps to speed the investigation of Tremere vampirism, which Valerius was pushing for a while. Needless to say, the Tremere don't appreciate yet another kick by a small and insignificant Covenant.
Summer, 1210 - Summer, 1211 - Fredric's Follies. Fredric, having lost his Gift, consults Adam, asking for remedy. Adam recommends a voyage. Fredric acts brashly and foolishly, and gets himself locked in the dungeon of a devil-worshipping Bishop. The magi rescue him, but he keeps getting in trouble. However, he meets Trianoma, the Founder, who urges him on his quest. He is the last one to see the Covenant of Empedoclea on this side of the Veil; and he witnesses its destruction, aiding the last Criamon there to commit ritual suicide. His Gift restored, he comes back to the Covenant, but not for long.
Autumn, 1210 - Unseelie faeries attack Dejalem. The way was opened them by a local girl, scorned by her peers. She wanted power and revenge over them; the Unseelie gave her that. By dragging a battle till morning, Daramus manages to drive them away.
Spring, 1211 - Marriage of Jerome D'Arvenee. Jerome is unhappy with the hag (but a rich hag) his uncle has arranged for him to marry, and slinks into a faerie wood. He falls in love with a faerie lady, and is nowhere to be found during the wedding. The magi cannot convince him to come back; and, with the approval of D'Arvenee, they blame Baron D'Our, also present at the wedding, with the boy's murder. They murder a convicted criminal, change his appearance to match that of Jerome, and D'Arvenee arrests D'Our on the spot. After a few months, Castle D'Our falls to the besiegers.
Summer, 1211 - Adrianus returns from Arcadia, with some rare and strange books, given to him by Tytalus.
Elaine Ex Merinita joins the Covenant. She is fleeing Hibernia (Aira), due to circumstances she declines to explain. The magi take her in.
Fredric creates a love potion, meant to inspire love between the French heir and his chosen bride; the two don't get along well, so magical aid is neccessary. Fredric adds another ingridient, which makes the Princess love him, as well. Mercifully for all involved, the Princess never has a chance to lay eyes on Fredric. King Philip Augustus is pleased, and rewards the Covenant richly.
Midsummer Night: About fifty well armed, tough, and well-trained Tremere men-at-arms attack the Covenant, at its most weakened moment. The soldiers quickly grab unclad revelers, using them as hostages, even killing a few. They demand all the books and all the vis. They have taken Trianoma as a hostage. Desperately, when ordered to hand over all the vis, Daramus uses 16 pawns of it to blank the minds of the guards near him, and to kill the leader. From then on, it's bedlam. Horses, ghosts, grogs, and magi are all battling soldiers, while all over the place naked people run away, shrieking. The Quaesitoris cannot convict any Tremere magus, but all the survivors of the attack force are executed. From then on, a watch is kept on each Midsummer Night. This attack came close to devastating the covenant.
Autumn, 1211 - Execution of Fredric. Fredric and Christoph have long harbored animosity for each other. After Fredric attempts to poison the new Bishop of Brest, and once again getting himself in prison, Christoph warns him that he has overstepped his bounds, and that his actions will be reported to the Quaesitoris. Not satisfied with that, he tries - unsuccessfully - to goad Fredric into Certamen. After a few failed attempts, he turns Fredric's mother, still living at the Covenant, into a fish - yet another insult, referring to Fredric's nickname. Fredric goes berserk, and instead of challenging Christoph to Certamen, attacks him - in his sanctum - with deadly spells. He is subdued by the other magi, but keeps trying to cast offensive spells at anyone within reach. A Quaesitor orders his execution, as a menace; the grogs obey with a relish. From that time on, an effigy of Fredric is burned every Midsummer Night.
Autumn, 1211 - Alice and Maximilian ex Jerbitonis join the covenant. For the next few months they travel around the tribunal, trying to gather vis. They run afoul of the lich Excellentius, whose stores of vis Maximilian raids.
Spring, 1212 - Winter 1212 - The Greek Expedition. A desperate message comes from the Covenant of Megaron, asking for help against an unspecified menace. Alice and Maximilian are sent there. Maximilian excels; he kills a large number of Latin knights and priests, and, under the name of "Evil Flying Dog" , becomes a Greek national hero. He and Alice manage to reconvene a Tribunal in the torn region, and Maximilian leads the assault on the Venetian magi who inhabit Athens. As a reward for their actions, the Tribunal votes them 30 pawns of vis, and the Byzantine Emperor gives them the reward put on their heads - 400 pounds for Maximilian, 80 for Alice. Alice takes the money, finds a ship with the emperor's blessing, and sails home with hardly any event worth mentioning. She also bears the Staff Of Criamon, found in occupied Constantinople.
Maximilian has greater aspirations. He wants to receive lands promised him when Constantinople is taken, so he stays in Greece. He joins with another magus in a disastrous expedition to the Tomb of Ares (Autumn). He is snatched away by Excellentius before he is terminated, but loses both arms, and all the vis and money he had with him. The lich provides him with skeletal arms. All other members of the expedition are lost. After promising Excellentius a large amount of vis and his services, the lich transports him back to the Covenant.
Spring, 1212 - A ghost haunts Castle D'Arvenee, that of the criminal the magi murdered a year ago. Worse, Jerome has ceased to exist; the mourning prayers said over his grave have extinguished his existance as a human. He is completely Faerie now. The magi confront the ghost, and Daramus manages to fail completely - while using too much vis. The ghost grows stronger than ever, and destroys the castle. Only after bargaining with the faeries (who restore the castle for Jerome's sake) and with the ghost (who wants a state funeral), is the situation restored to normal.
Winter, 1212 - A deadly assault by strange elemental creatures almost destroys the covenant. The main building is destroyed, with many books, labs, and the entire larder. The magi just barely manage to overcome the creatures. Satanists and a strange magus harass them for days. They finally find the hideout of the magus - the same Diedne covenant they encountered years ago - and they manage to defeat the sleeping magi, with the help of a local dragoness.
Summer, 1213 - Maximilian departs for the Holy Land, on a pilgrimage. He is promised by the Bishop of Vienne that if the pilgrimage is indeed completed, and he visits the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, his excommunication will be removed. He is last seen crossing from the Lebannon into the Holy Land proper, despite warnings from the Templar knights of Tripoly.
Winter, 1213 - Adrian returns from Arcadia, with several books given him by Tytalus himself.
Summer, 1214 - Adam passes into Final Twilight. The magi only found out about it a month later, when grogs begin to comment that it's been a very long time since he's taken any meals. With the permission of a Quaesitor, they enter his sanctum, and indeed find him gone.
Summer, 1214 - The Magi of Ad Gloriam via vim, a Tremere Covenant, make the mistake of pissing off Adrian, who proceeds to destroy them - and their covenant. Soon afterwards, to avoid investigations, he leaves the covenant, motivated by the sword of Gaius Julius Caesar. All the magi sigh in contentment as he and his army of legionary ghosts leave. He has not been heard of since.
Spring, 1215 - Alice publishes "On the Jews and their Witchcraft", a treatise written at the request of the Jews of France, "proving" Jewish worship is not witchcraft or magic.
Summer, 1216 - Beginning of the love affair between Alice ex Jerbitonis and the Duke of Brittany. She gives birth to his son, named Jerard, in the following year. She begins to hatch plots which will allow him to rise to the throne of the Dukedom; however, the child is too magical to ever pass for nor mundane. The Duke manages to remove her excommunication.
Autumn, 1216 - Lucas becomes sancrist of St. Benedict of the Rule. The post is second in seniority to the abbot. His friendly relations with the magi continue. A twig of the White Tree is planted at the monastery, and grows swiftly into a mighty tree, which awes and pleases the monks, whose order is nicknamed "Order of the White Monks", due to the color of their robes.
Winter, 1216 - Trianoma begins her apprenticeship under Daramus and Penelope.
Summer, 1217 - Alice begins secret negotiations with Albigensians, looking for a long-term undermining of the Church.
Winter, 1218 - Daramus experiences a powerful Twilight. He emerges stronger - few of the Criamon can match his knowledge of Rnigmatic Wisdom - but as he is periliously close to Final Twilight, he listens to Penelope's pleas and stops his researchs into Vim.
Summer, 1219 - Daramus publishes "On the Creation of Magical Progeny", a large work, combining Magical Theory, Enigmatic Wisdom, and Vim, dealing with the nature of children born in areas of high magical aura; the work is groundbreaking, and copies of it are speedily made and sent to all major Covenants.
Winter, 1219 - The Duke of Brittany passes away. His son, Robert, becomes the next Duke. As he is a former monk, the magi fear a change for the worse in his attitude towards them, but such change does not come. The magi continue to come to councils at Easter and Christmas.
Spring, 1220 - A new Tremere Covenant, Voluntas Vincit Omnia, is built not far from Alvarium. Suspiciously, it is built on the site of Ad Gloriam, the Covenant Adrian destroyed.
Summer, 1221 - Daramus presents his new masterpiece, "Commentary on Tytalus' Lost Writings on Vim", based on the writings brought by Adrian, which are unknown to the Order in general. The Covenant reaps heaps of Vis for giving away the right to copy those works - for while Daramus, as a Bonisagus, must share his research with the Order, he does not have to share his texts. He also appeals to the Tribunal, asking them to send their new magi to Alvarium, which is nearly depleted of Magi. The Quaesitoris back him, reminding that the Covenant has done more than its share of search for apprentices, and was always supportive of the Order; a letter to that effect is sent to all Covenants in the Tribunal. Fudarus also backs the request, promising five pawns of Vis for every Magus who is accepted to Alvarium. The Tribunal rejects scornfully the accusations leveled by Malerius ex Tremere, who claims the magi of Alvarium are responsible for the destruction of Ad Gloriam, and passes a decree, saying that "The Tribunal of Normandy sees with distaste and alarm the hostile actions taken by House Tremere against the honestissimi and law abiding magi of Alvarium, and advises House Tremere to focus its attention on the rotting limbs of its body, exposed in the Vampire scandal and the Fiasco of the English Scheme of 1210." The Tytali are instrumental in the passing of this declaration. The enraged Malerius leaves the Tribunal in rage.
