Charter of the Covenant Alvarium
This is the Charter of the Covenant Alvarium, founded in the Year of our Lord One Thousand, Two Hundred and Seven, in the land of Britannia Minora, at the Hill of Bibracta Parva.
This document shall describe the Ways of Alvarium. Special attention shall be paid to the Principles by and for which the Covenant Alvarium was formed, the Laws of the Magi and the Rules governing the Practices with the Mundane.
Principlis Alvarii
It is our firm belief that a Covenant of the Order of Hermes must be guided by a set of principles, hereby presented:
- The Principle of the Law
- The Hermetic Code is supreme to all others. The Covenant's actions shall all abide by the Code.
- The Principle of Equality
- All members of the Covenant are equal, and will be granted equal rights and distributed equal duties.
- The Principle of Freedom
- Magi of the Covenant may do as they please, as long as they abide by the first two Principles.
Leges Magorum
These are the Laws by which matters of the Magi of the Covenant shall be
ordered, in accordance with the Principles of the Covenant as set before.
- The Council of the Covenant
- Decisions of the Covenant shall be decided upon by the
gathering of the Magi of the Covenant, called the Council of the Covanent.
In cases when such a gathering is not possible, the Head of the Council,
who is chosen by the Council, shall make the ruling.
- The Council may replace the Head of the Council at its discretion.
- For a Council to be valid, at least two of every three Magi
of the Covenant must attend. Barring that, the presence and approval of
the Head of the Council is mandatory.
- No decision of the Council may violate the Code of Hermes.
- The Council shall abide by the decisions and edicts of the
Tribunal, and will act to fulfill the Tribunal's demands and requests.
- Membership in the Covenant
- The Applicant Magus must be member in good standing of the Order of Hermes.
Furthermore, he must abide by one of the following terms:
- The Magus in question is one of the Founders of the
Covenant.
- The Magus in question is a filius of a member of the
Covenant, and upon passing his Apprentice's Gauntlet has decided to
join the Covenant. The Magus shall then enter a trial period
of one year.
- The Magus in question has passed a trial period of three years
during which he has not transgressed against any of the Principles of
Alvarium in any way, intentional or otherwise, and has answered to the
demands set by the Council of the Covenant when said Magus requested
membership in the Covenant.
- The demands set by the Council shall be detailed in full and written
down in a contract which shall be signed by the Head of the Council and the
applicant Magus.
- A Magus in his trial period is a Probational Member of the Covenant,
and has no vote in the Council of the Covenant.
- Property of the Covenant
- Property obtained by the Covenant shall be divided or shared equally
by all members of the Covenant, in accordance to the Principle of Equality.
- Property of the Covenant shall not be given away, destroyed, removed or
otherwise altered significantly without the express permission of the Council.
- Property of the Covenant may include persons, land, manuscripts, currency,
magical artifacts, vis and anything else so defined by the Council.
- Members shall notify the Council whenever they take vis from
the Covenant's stores. The vis must be used for the benefit of
the Covenant, whether it is for the acquisition of knowledge or for
use in actions meant to further the Covenant's goals.
- No member may take vis from the Covenant's stores if taking
said vis will leave the store of that Art's vis empty, unless
the Council has decided the situation is urgent enough to warrant such use.
- Dealings with others blessed with the Gift
- When dealing with Magi of the Order of Hermes, we shall be guided by the Code of Hermes, and the Peripheral Code of the Order.
- Members may not call other Magi to a Wizard's War without the express permission of the Council.
Punishment due for failure to follow these rules
shall be decided upon and dealt with by the Council.
Negotia cum Mundanis
As it is our misfortune to share Creation with those not possessing
of the Gift, and our good fortune to be the Gifted Few, we deem it
necessary to detail the manner by which the Mundane shall be dealt with.
In the dealings of the Covenant with the rulers of the Mundane:
- The Magi of the Covenant shall display caution and
attempt to cooperate with figures of power in Mundane society.
- The Magi of the Covenant will never go out in strife against the
rulers of the Mundane, in accordance to the Hermetic Code.
- The interests of the Order of Hermes shall always take precedence
over those of Mundane allies and relations.
