How to Infanty-assault Tanks in SP3
It's easy to kill inferior tanks but, how about killing tanks that are better than yours?
Here's my method:
1. Try to find a tank platoon that is isolated.
2. If necessary, use smoke to screen the flanks of the target tanks.
3. Show a single (hopefully inexpensive unit) target to the tank(s),and try to draw fire. Then, show another vehicle or small infantry unit to draw fire again. Now it's time to move the first target you offered and draw fire again. It may be necessary to fire at the enemy armor and in fact, it's better because if it is carrying infantry, they will dimount and can be suppressed before the assault begins. It's nice to have a mg unit to spray any infantry that dismounts. Spray the armor and try to get the infantry to retreat.
4. Once you have the armor buttoned up, any infantry dismounted and suppressed, it's time to perform the assault. At this point, I like to use my own armor to see if the enemy tanks have any rounds left. Move in for the assault carrying some sort of infantry which has tank-killing capability. If possible, drive right up next to the tanks to be assaulted. Dismount your infantry, check their suppression level (look for a maximum suppression of 2), and assault the tanks. Rally the infantry unit and if a suppression level of no more than 2 is achieved, assault again. If your infantry cannot pass the morale check, bring in another infantry or AT and repeat.
5. Notice that armor has only been used to transport infantry and for backup in case things go wrong with the assault.
Trick: If you attempt an assault and your infantry fails the morale check, all is not lost. Try to rally. If you can get the suppression level down to about 10 or so, it is possible to load the infantry on a vehicle to change the suppression level to approximately that of the vehicle. Now you can assault (if the morale check is passed).
Finally: Try to hoard your tank shots and movement points for your vehicles so you can back off to a better defensive location for the next turn. I have found that it is entirely possible to kill Tigers, KVs, and other heavy tanks that have much higher command ratings than my own by using this method of assault. If you have other ideas about assaulting armor in SP3, please email artifice@cvc.net - I would appreciate hearing them........
