RP'ing a slave Playing a slave in UO is VERY difficult for a number of reasons. I would suggest not trying to play your slave as your main character. Realistically, slavery cannot survive in the close proximity to dominate, anti-slavery cultures. Slavery demands confinement. Due to the realities of magic and the relatively small size of Britannia, maintaining a slave against enemy rescue attempts is a fairly difficult. A slave cannot be guarded sufficiently, so some creative license is required. Secondly, playing a slave requires a great deal of maturity. In QVI, your character is only slightly more valuable than a sword or other common item. This of course will depend on your character's master, but you should expect a great deal of abuse. Finally, there is the difficult issue of the role of a slave in the House. A slave should never leave QVI territory without specific permission from the owner or House leadership. Slave life is usually spent toiling away for their master and interaction between slaves and masters is obviously limited to only a few relatively brief kinds of encounters. A slave should be reasonably skilled in a couple crafts; this will be the main "use" of the slave. That is, being ordered to do work will be the main role of a slave. Aside for simple skill demands, a slave may be asked to gather supplies, clean, cook, or play fodder in drow attacks. These orders should be carried out without question for the punishment for disobedience is swift and severe. Some possible scenarios suggest themselves. A slave can serve the house by supplying food, drink or entertainment at meetings. A dance, song or story told well will increase the slave's worth and prolong his/her life. A very loyal slave may be used to spy for the House, as a human would be much more accepted by the outside world. The slave is also encouraged to set up a vender to proudly display his/her crafted goods for the benefit of the House. On a darker note, the slave can be used in all sorts of strange experiments (which I will leave up to the imagination and conscience of the players). In the Underdark, slaves are nearly valueless. But on the surface the equation is skewed toward the slave's favor. Slaves are much harder to come by and much harder to maintain on the surface, therefor their value is greatly increased. Drow who mistreat another drow's slave may have to pay greatly to offset the owner's losses. |
