Okei! ^_^ I got confirmation AND the translated lyrics from 2 individuals that the second
set of lyrics I once had on this page (which are now the ones you see up there) were the
correct ones. I'd like to give a big thank you to Rob Dowers (rdowers@primenet.com) and
... um ... Follower of the Clawed Albino (afn23950@afn.org) (^^) for their help.
As before, thanks goes to Jonas Marcho (BolaHead@msn.com) who was kind enough to mail me the
thought-to-be lyrics to the song. ^_^; I thank him for his efforts.
About the Lyrics ...
I was tired at the time of making the graphic so I made some minor(?) errors.
The part "Ne me mori facias" shouldn't start with a captial "N". ^^;; Sorry about that.
"Glorioso Generosa" should be "Glorioso generosa" and I think the literal meaning is supposed
to be just "glorious, noble" but in the context of the song, "Glorious and noble one" sounds
better, ne? ^^;
Note that the English after each double line is the translation for BOTH lines. For example:
"Estuans interius ira vehementi" is "Burning inside with violent anger".
Brief Info About the Origin of the Lyrics
After doing some Web surfing on some FFVII Japanese pages, I came across
one that also had the lyrics to Katayoku no tenshi. Click here to see -->
•Ð—ƒ‚Ì“VŽg (Use Shift-JIS to read.) The Follower (^^) was able to make out this info
on the page:
" ... [I]t appears the song was heavily based on a piece by Carl Orff called
"Carmina Burana". From the Japanese site and a US-based classical music
site on "Carmina Burana", one learns he [I take it this means Orff not Uematsu]
in turn wrote it based off of 13th-century manuscripts by bards and defrocked
monks in Bavaria. (Different music, though, obviously. :) (No, I've never
heard "Carmina Burana" so I can't tell you if the FF7 music is ripped off. :)"
Interpretation of Lyrics
The Follower (I really do need his/her name or some easier alias to go by. ^^;) was also
kind enough to make some short notes after each stanza (along with my goofy notes):
-
Estuans interius ira vehementi ~~
-
Burning inside with violent anger. "Sepiroth is seething in anger at humans
for being "traitors". So he is bent on the destruction of the world and elevation to
godhood. How "Akira". :)"
[Kouryuu: Um ... I, for one, have not seen Akira yet.
Well, just the first 20 minutes of the movie. ^^; But I still get the gist of it. ^o^
Maybe one day, I'll crack out that LD and watch it. I know I'll fastforward through the
ending because my brother made it sound so sick ... -_-; You know, just about every anime
fan that I know HAS seen Akira before. I wonder why I haven't ....]
-
Sors immanis, et inanis ~~
-
Fate -- Monstrous and empty. "Sepiroth's fate. Through monstrous acts
of the Shin-ra scientists and his anger he has become monstrous, and is destined to a
monstrous and empty fate. Sad."
[Kouryuu: I think the emptiness here can also represent that Sephiroth was never destined to
succeed in his ascension to godhood; that is, his fate was to die. How ironic, since he says
similar words to Tseng at the Setra (Cetra?) Temple when speaking about humanity's fate.]
-
Veni, veni, venias, ne me mori facias ~~
-
Come, come, Oh come, do not let me die...
"Sepiroth pleading for his life? Or is it Cloud? :)"
[Kouryuu: In all honesty, I have no idea who is pleading for mercy. It would make more sense
that this is looked at from Cloud's perspective. Demo ... the song is about Sephiroth. Maybe
it can be twisted so that it's humanity (as a whole) that is crying for mercy? ^^; Or
Sephiroth wishing for immortality? I really don't know. ^^;]
-
Gloriosa, generosa ~~
-
Glorious and noble one...
[Kouryuu: Um ... Sephiroth, noble? I don't think so. Well, noble in what sense? And
glorious ... I can kind of see how that can work. =P Hmm ... maybe it's Sephiroth seeing
himself as being glorious and noble? ^_^;]
