The SU-100 entered production in September of 1944 and began replacing earlier types in soviet service such as the SU-76M. With its hard-hitting 100mm D-10S gun, the SU-100 was a capable tank killer. When production stopped in 1947, some 1,534 had been produced. Inevitably, many were transferred to soviet allies such as China and North Korea. During the Bay of Pigs Invasion, Fidel Castro was carried to the battle in an SU-100. Early versions of the SU-100 suffered from a lack of a machinegun for close-in defense. In 1962 this deficiency was overcome by the addition of a bow mounted and a pintle mounted 14.5mm KPV MG. New types of ammo kept the SU-100 viable in PLA service until 1989, when it was finally superseded by the Type 89 SPG. -Desperado6 |
