In the mid-90s (1994?) the PRC purchased a large quantity of the latest weaponry from economically strapped Russia. Among these vehicles were a quantity of T-80U tanks. Extensively disected and analyzed, the tanks contributed to the design of new PLA systems. Now, these vehicles are reported to be part of a capital defense unit stationed near Beijing. The T-80U is fitted with the 2A46M-1 125mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing the 9M199 Refleks (AT-11 Sniper) tube-launched semiautomatic laser beamriding ATGM. Also mounted is a 7.62mm PKT coaxial MG and a 12.7mm NSVT AAMG. An infrared sight is provided along with standard 1G46 day optics. With the tank's 1A42 fire control system, targets may be engaged while on the move. The PLA tank's powerplant may be the standard 1250HP gas turbine or a diesel as seen in the T-80UD. Pakistan recently purchased 320 T-80UD tanks from Russia in a move that must have sent shockwaves through NORINCO, since that company has tried so hard to market its own tanks to Pakistan. -Desperado6 |
