Tube Artillery:
Modernization of the People's War
As early as 1928 plans were laid to include trench mortars in the Red Army.  In the korean conflict,  Chairman Mao indicated that his volunteers could not overwhelm the UN forces because of the tremendous weight of their firepower.  This lesson was not lost on the PLA.  Eventually artillery made up a large component of PLA forces and doctrine.
