Type 60:
Inspiration in a Can
PT-76B
A quantity of PT-76 amphibious light tanks were provided to the PRC by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s.  They were well liked by the PLA for their high mobility, ease of maintenance, and simple construction. The PT-76 engine was basically a T-54 V12 cut in half to an inline 6 cylinder engine.  Armament consisted of a 76mm D-56T gun and a 7.62mm SGMT coaxial MG.

Production commenced rapidly in the PRC as the Type 60; however, most tanks of this type were provided as aid to North Vietnam.  There the vehicles enjoyed many successes when employed against infantry, but often fell victim to the superior gunnery skill enjoyed by ARVN tankers over their northern adversaries.

During this time the ranks of PLA armor were being filled with a tank inspired by the Type 60, the Type 63.  Later the same basic PT-76 design would be used to create the Type 77 APC and the new Type 99 tank.
