While the PRC PT-76 clone called Type 60 was being put into production, design work had already begun on its successor, the Type 63. While the chassis remained similar, the Type 63 was given a new larger turret that accomodated an 85mm gun, a 7.62mm Type 57T coaxial MG, a 12.7mm Type 54 AAMG, and better protection. Also, the Type 63 upgraded from the Type 60 240hp 6-cylinder inline to a 12-cylinder 400hp engine. The result was a hugely successful vehicle that fought well in the varied terrain of the PRC and southeast asia. These vehicles are fielded today with both the PLA Army and Marine Corps. There are three main versions of this tank: Type 63: The prototype, a Type 60 with the turret of the Type 62. Type 63-I: Main production variant, added the 12-cylinder engine. Type 63-II: Added a bolt-on Norinco laser rangefinder. In the 1990s the design was further improved as the Type 63A, ZTS-63A, and the Type 99. -Desperado6 |
