Type 99 | |||||||||||||||||||||||
The Type 63 tank played a critical role in the PLA both as amphibious firepower and recon tank. When the 85mm gun of the Type 63 became obsolete, it was decided to build a new upgunned version. That version took shape as the Type 63A. The Type 63A differed from its predecessor by the addition of a new turret with a reduced-velocity 105mm gun and redesigned chassis. The new gun gave the Type 63A the punch to take out any tank in Taiwanese inventory. The lengthened hull offered increased flotation for the heavier turret and improved swimming characteristics. Later the type was improved again and given the new designation, Type 99. Variants include: ZTS-63A: A prototype with heightened Type 63 cast turret and new gun. Various trim vanes and composite armors were fitted. T-63A: Production model with new turret and hull. T-99: T-63A with NBC protective system. -Desperado6 |
